Mangaluru, Karnataka – Two high-profile cases have been filed in Belthangady against activists Girish Mattannanavar and Mahesh Shetty Thimarody, stemming from allegations that they created and distributed videos on social media that purportedly disrupted communal harmony and offended public sentiments. The police released this information on Tuesday.

The first complaint, dated August 30, was lodged by Praveen K R from Dharmasthala. Praveen accused Girish Mattannanavar, who allegedly collaborated with Mahesh Shetty Thimarody and others, of orchestrating the dissemination of what were labeled as inflammatory and misleading videos via various social media platforms. The intention behind these videos, as stated in the complaint, was to disturb the peace and religious harmony in the region.

Following this complaint, the Belthangady police proceeded to register a case under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, according to information provided by a senior police officer.

Another complaint, filed on September 1 by Rajendra Das D, also from Dharmasthala, further accused Mattannanavar of making obscene and offensive remarks in a video that was later aired on a local media channel. The complaint highlighted that the video had caused public discontent.

In response, the police registered a case under the applicable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Both incidents are currently under investigation, with police actively recording statements and gathering digital evidence.

The Dakshina Kannada district has recently intensified oversight of social media activities, with law enforcement cautioning against the distribution of material that could potentially disrupt public order.
