New Delhi, Aug 14 (PTI) The government has declared service medals for 1,090 police personnel from various central and state forces in anticipation of Independence Day celebrations.

As per a statement from the Union Home Ministry, 233 personnel have been awarded the Medal for Gallantry (GM), 99 personnel have been granted the President's Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM), and 758 have received the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM).

These awards include medals for individuals in the fire services, home guard, civil defence, and correctional services.

In the category of gallantry medals, the largest number of 152 have been awarded to personnel involved in operations in Jammu and Kashmir. This is followed by 54 medals for troops engaged in anti-Naxal operations, three for duties in the northeast, and 24 for various other regions.

Additionally, four fire service personnel and one home guard and civil defence official have been recognized with the gallantry medal, as stated by the ministry.

The Medal for Gallantry is awarded for acts of rare and conspicuous bravery, saving life and property, preventing crime, or arresting criminals. The PSM is awarded for a specially distinguished service record, while the MSM is granted for valuable service marked by resourcefulness and devotion to duty.
