Vivek Agnihotri Appeals CM Mamata for Film's Unhindered Release

Kolkata, Sep 3 (PTI) - Renowned filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri has passionately urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to facilitate the unhindered release of his latest film, 'The Bengal Files'. He claims that members of the Trinamool Congress are intimidating theater owners in an attempt to thwart the movie's screening.

This film, a part of Agnihotri's notable Files trilogy following 'The Tashkent Files' (2019) and 'The Kashmir Files' (2022), delves into the historical communal riots that rocked Kolkata on Direct Action Day in August 1946.

In an earnest video message posted on X, Agnihotri implored Banerjee to pay heed to his concerns and not to suppress this significant chapter of history from public discourse.

He contended that several theater owners in West Bengal reported facing pressure and threats to cancel the screenings, urging Banerjee to uphold her constitutional obligations.

"You have sworn an oath on the Indian Constitution to safeguard the citizens' rights, including the freedom of expression. It is your duty to ensure the film is screened without interference. Remember, the CBFC has approved this film," Agnihotri emphasized.

He underscored Bengal's rich cultural legacy, highlighting its pivotal role in India's history, particularly during 1905 and 1947.

Addressing critics who argue that the film might reignite painful memories of communal violence, Agnihotri posed a compelling question: "If Japanese children are taught about Hiroshima and Nagasaki, why shouldn't the younger generation be informed about a crucial aspect of Bengal and India's history?"

"A true Bengali would not censor this film. It cannot be banned in Bengal," he asserted.

Agnihotri further questioned why portrayals of Muslim, Christian, and Dalit persecutions are prevalent in films globally, yet narratives of Hindu genocide are restrained. "Why leave history untold?" he queried.

He also recalled the disruption of the film's trailer launch at a prominent hotel in Kolkata on August 17, labeling it a blatant infringement on free expression.

Starring eminent actors like Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Saswata Chatterjee, and Darshan Kumarr, the film is slated for release this Friday.
