Varun Dhawan & Janhvi Kapoor's Rom-Com Magic: Passion, Plot, & Melody

Mumbai, Oct 1 (PTI) — Actors Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor believe that a blend of passion, an engaging storyline, and catchy music can transform romantic comedies into mood elevators that leave audiences feeling joyful.

The pair is teaming up once more for the rom-com "Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari," after sharing the screen in the 2022 romantic drama "Bawaal."

Helmed by Shashank Khaitan, the movie stars Varun and Janhvi as Sunny and Tulsi, whose reunion in Delhi is driven by a plan to rekindle their past romances with their exes.

In an effort to spark jealousy, they fake a relationship, which results in a cascade of humorous mishaps and misunderstandings.

"Shashank's vision was to create a family-friendly film where viewers can have a great time... I believe that whatever you create should stem from passion," Varun, known for hits like "Main Tera Hero," "Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania," "Judwaa 2," and "Jugjugg Jeeyo," shared with PTI.

"While we definitely had fun making it, the film features moments designed to touch the audience. I'm thrilled about the music; three of our tracks are already in Spotify's top 100, and I hope they climb even further," he added.

Janhvi expressed her enthusiasm for diving back into the romantic comedy genre with "Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari." Just this August, she appeared alongside Sidharth Malhotra in "Param Sundari."

"Romantic comedy is something Shashank and Varun execute brilliantly. For an actress, receiving such a role is invaluable... I was eager to dive in," the actress mentioned.

Both Dhawan and Kapoor recall enjoying timeless classics from filmmakers like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Priyadarshan, whose films are celebrated for their blend of humor and soul.

Varun emphasized that despite popular belief, crafting a rom-com is a demanding task that requires a great deal of effort.

"There’s a misconception that lighthearted or comedic films are easy to make, but capturing the essence of comedy is challenging. Drawing audiences into the cinema, making them laugh, and convincing them of the film's world requires immense effort," he explained. Janhvi added, "What's more fulfilling than making someone smile? Growing up, films like these defined Bollywood for me."

Shashank expressed his admiration for classics like "Andaz Apna Apna," "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge," and "Judwaa," admiring mainstream movies despite their perceived lack of respect compared to serious films.

"The industry often overlooks this genre, seeing it as less legitimate cinema. However, I view filmmakers who have excelled at comedy in the same high regard as those known for intense dramas," he commented. "There was a phase where only intense cinema was considered true cinema. For me, this is authentic cinema too."

At 38, Varun feels there's still ample time for him to indulge in light-hearted films.

"I have a few years before transitioning to something heavier. There’s still plenty of room for comedies in my career. Up next is 'Border 2,' a stark contrast to what I’m doing now," he noted. "For now, I want to continue producing feel-good movies that bring smiles to audiences."

Produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, "Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari" features an ensemble cast including Sanya Malhotra, Rohit Saraf, Manish Paul, Akshay Oberoi, and others. The film is slated for release on October 2.
