Surveen Chawla Advocates for Women-Centric Roles in Cinema

Surveen Chawla advocates for more women-centric roles in the film industry, highlighting opportunities in OTT. She seeks creatively fulfilling projects, including her upcoming role in Netflix’s 'Mandala Murders,' a mythological crime-thriller set in Charandaspur.

Surveen Chawla Advocates for Women-Centric Roles in Cinema

Mumbai, Jul 24 (PTI): Surveen Chawla, acclaimed for her roles in popular OTT shows such as “Sacred Games,” “Rana Naidu,” and “Criminal Justice,” highlights the scarcity of women-centric narratives in the film industry. Despite her eagerness to be part of films, Chawla notes that substantial roles for women remain limited.

Chawla acknowledges that while the industry is evolving, there's still much progress to be made in providing equitable opportunities for women both on and behind the camera. “Women need to be integral to stories, not mere components. The industry is moving toward a space where equality in storytelling, pay, and treatment are becoming priorities,” she shared with PTI.

The talented actor, whose film credits include “Ugly,” “Hate Story 2,” and “Parched,” finds the OTT space abundant with substantial roles, which she presently prioritizes. Chawla expressed a desire to contribute meaningfully to projects, stating, “If I have the opportunity to act in films that fulfill my creative hunger, I'll seize it.”

At 40, Chawla is seeking challenging roles, and she will soon appear in the Netflix series “Mandala Murders.” “It’s important to feel excited about work. From the available opportunities, I choose the most stimulating and novel ones,” Chawla stated. “Waking up to a day of shooting should bring joy and a sense of accomplishment.”

“Mandala Murders” features Vaani Kapoor as Rhea Thomas, an uncompromising investigative officer unraveling a conspiracy of ritualistic killings linked to an ancient secret society in the enigmatic town of Charandaspur. Directed by Gopi Puthran, known for “Mardaani 2,” and Manan Rawat, the mythological crime-thriller promises an intriguing narrative.

Chawla’s co-star, Vaibhav Raj Gupta, also sees the show as a significant opportunity. Known for his role in “Gullak,” Gupta shared his anticipation: “I've waited three years for this moment, hoping ‘Mandala...’ will elevate my reach beyond what ‘Gullak’ achieved. It’s a big leap, portraying Vikram Singh.”

Produced by YRF Entertainment, “Mandala Murders” will debut on Netflix on July 25.
