Originally, there was no mention of Basanti or Radha, and Jai and Veeru were conceptualized as former army men dismissed for indiscipline. Akhtar recently revisited these initial ideas as he marked 50 years of the film's legacy. "Sholay," conceived as a tale revolving around a dacoit, was Salim Khan's brainchild. "Initially, it was about a retired major and two discharged army recruits, but limitations related to the army led us to rethink this. Hence, we pivoted to a story featuring a cop and two hoodlums," Akhtar explained.
