Margaret Qualley Confronts Generational Trauma in ‘The Substance’

Los Angeles, Aug 5 (PTI) - Margaret Qualley, known for her role in the body horror drama film "The Substance," revealed that the film compelled her to face "generations of trauma".

Qualley, whose parents are actor Andie MacDowell and former model Paul Qualley, appeared alongside Demi Moore in this intense narrative.

The 2024 release, directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, tells the story of Elisabeth Sparkle, a fitness icon played by Moore. Sparkle is ousted from her TV show after turning 50, leading her to the "Substance," an illicit product that allows her to create a youthful version of herself named Sue, played by Qualley. However, both characters must share the same existence in the world.

Qualley described joining the film as akin to stepping into "the eye of the storm." "It was like confronting all of my personal issues, my mother’s, and inherited generational traumas. The challenge of portraying an idealized, youthful fembot was a nightmare. Being depicted in such a manner clashed with my perception of femininity, which seemed, in many ways, more masculine," she told Cosmopolitan in an interview.

She expressed deep admiration for her co-star, Moore. "What I'll cherish most is my relationship with Demi Moore. She’s a remarkable individual, embodying strength and wisdom while also being incredibly gentle and open. I've learned a great deal from her, and she's become one of my closest friends," said Qualley.

"The Substance" debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, where it received the accolade for best screenplay and garnered an impressive 11-minute standing ovation.

Meanwhile, Qualley is preparing for the release of her next film, "Honey Don't!". This comedy, directed by Ethan Coen, is scheduled to premiere on August 22.
