New Delhi, July 22 (PTI): In a remarkable acknowledgment of his contribution to cinema, acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has been honored as the 'Asian Filmmaker of the Year' by the prestigious Busan International Film Festival.

The award recognizes an Asian film persona or organization that has significantly contributed to enhancing the Asian film industry and cultural landscape.

Jafar Panahi, celebrated for his groundbreaking films such as "The White Balloon," "Offside," "The Circle," and "3 Faces," remains a luminary of international cinema. Yet, he has endured a fraught relationship with the Iranian authorities. I accept this award not only for myself but for all those artists who, amidst silence, exile, or pressure, persist in their creative endeavors."

This year, Panahi's "It Was Just an Accident" secured the top honor at the Cannes Film Festival. His illustrious career boasts accolades such as the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for "The Circle" in 2002 and the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for "Taxi" in 2015.

Among his distinguished accomplishments are the Locarno Golden Leopard for "The Mirror" in 1997 and the Cannes screenplay prize for "3 Faces" in 2018.

Panahi is set to receive his award during the opening ceremony of the Busan International Film Festival on September 17. The festival will continue till September 26.
