Gina Carano Settles Lawsuit With Lucasfilm Over 'The Mandalorian' Dismissal

Gina Carano Settles Lawsuit With Lucasfilm Over 'The Mandalorian' Dismissal

Los Angeles, Aug 8 (AP) - Actor Gina Carano has reached a settlement in her federal lawsuit against Lucasfilm and its parent company, The Walt Disney Co. The suit revolved around her claim that she was dismissed from “The Mandalorian” in 2021 due to her expression of right-wing views on social media.

Though the specifics of the settlement remain confidential, Lucasfilm released a statement saying, “Ms Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect.” The company also conveyed a willingness to consider future collaborations with Carano.

The settlement led to a stipulation in a federal court filing on Thursday that dismisses the case with prejudice, preventing it from being resurfaced in court. The case, initially slated for a Los Angeles trial in February of next year, now awaits formal dismissal by a judge.

Last year’s lawsuit, filed in a California federal court, argued Carano was wrongfully terminated from the Disney+ "Star Wars" series. This followed a controversial social media post by Carano that equated the treatment of American conservatives to that of Jews during Nazi Germany. The post ignited widespread criticism and a #FireGinaCarano movement online.

In a recent statement, Carano expressed gratitude to her supporters, saying, “I’d like to thank you all for your unrelenting support throughout my life and career, you’ve been the heartbeat that has kept my story alive. I hope to make you proud.” She further shared excitement about her future endeavors in the arts, inviting her audience to join her next chapter.

Carano also acknowledged Elon Musk for his financial support of the lawsuit, mentioning he asked for nothing in return.

The lawsuit alleged that the 43-year-old was dismissed because she “dared voice her own opinions” amid demands from an “online bully mob” for her to comply with their progressive stances.

Carano, a former mixed martial artist, portrayed Cara Dune on the show, a role she held for two seasons since the show's 2019 debut. Anticipation builds for a feature film, “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” starring Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver, scheduled for release next summer.

Beyond this incident, Carano faced earlier criticisms for mocking mask-wearing during the pandemic and falsely alleging voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election. (AP) RB RB
