20th Anniversary of 'Pride & Prejudice': A Cinematic Return

New Delhi, Jul 16 (PTI) British filmmaker Joe Wright's iconic film "Pride & Prejudice" is set to make a return to Indian theaters with a special re-release celebrating its 20th anniversary. Starring Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen, the 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1813 classic novel will grace cinema screens again on July 25, announced PVR INOX in partnership with United International Pictures (UIP) on Wednesday.

The cherished romantic drama, renowned for its portrayal of early 19th-century England, showcases Knightley as the vibrant Elizabeth Bennet, who navigates complexities of class, family ties, and romance. As the aloof and wealthy Mr. Darcy, played by Macfayden, steps into her life, misconceptions and prejudices pose as barriers. However, as hidden truths come to light, both Elizabeth and Darcy confront their own imperfections and assumptions, paving the way towards mutual respect and eventual love.

Acclaimed for its exquisite cinematography, compelling performances, background score, and poignant rendition of Austen’s timeless themes, the film famously received four Academy Award nominations, including a nod for Best Actress for Knightley. With a star-studded ensemble cast of Donald Sutherland, Rosamund Pike, Carey Mulligan, Jena Malone, Tom Hollander, Judi Dench, Talulah Riley, and Rupert Friend, "Pride & Prejudice" captivated audiences worldwide.

The film experienced a successful re-release in US theaters in April, grossing over USD 5 million. Niharika Bijli, Lead Strategist at PVR INOX, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We’re delighted to bring 'Pride & Prejudice' to PVR INOX in India after its international re-release.”

She further highlighted the film's enduring appeal: “This year marks a milestone anniversary for this beautiful adaptation, which quickly achieved cult classic status. Following the film’s successful re-release globally, we were eager to extend the same cinematic experience to fans in India. We’re thrilled to celebrate this iconic film as it solidifies its place in cinema history.”
