United Opposition fails to dent BJP in first semifinal before 2024 Lok Sabha elections | Tripura Results

In what was being called the first semifinal before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the concept of a united Opposition taking on the Bharatiya Janata Party was put to the test.

In Tripura, longtime rivals Congress and the Left Front buried their differences to form an alliance for the Assembly elections.

However, the tie-up failed to dent the BJP, as the ruling party and its ally IPFT managed to hold on to power, albeit with lesser seats.

The performance of Congress and Left - the two parties which dominated Tripura politics for decades - was actually comparable to the fledgling party TIPRA Motha in these polls.

It remains to be seen whether the experience of Tripura would motivate Opposition parties to strategise better for a united fight in 2024 or dissuade them from forming an official alliance.
