One person has been arrested in connection with the murder of a youth from minority community in Surathkal here, police said on Sunday.
The person arrested is the owner of the car that is said to have been used by the culprits for the crime.
"More than 51 people have been inquired into in connection with the murder. We got the traces of a car while scanning the CCTV footage- White Hyundai Eon car- on the basis of footage and registration number we had taken eight cars into custody and inquired its owners," Mangaluru Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said.
Speaking to reporters here, he said, based on available information and inquiry, the owner of one specific car has been taken into custody on the outskirts of Surathkal last evening.
"During the inquiry he has disclosed certain information regarding who took the car from him... Now he will be presented before the court and taken into custody. He will be further questioned from which we may get further information on those involved," he said adding that based on the information gathered so far, police teams are at work to nab the culprits.
Mohammed Fazil (23) was hacked to death on July 28 by three to four miscreants at Surathkal near here.
The killing had come close on the heels of the killing of Bharatiya Yuva Morcha member Praveen Nettar by unidentified motor bike-borne assailants on Tuesday night at the district's Bellare in Sullia taluk, following which tension had prevailed in several parts of Dakshina Kannada. .
Kumar said one of the accused had good contact with the car owner and had taken the car from him earlier too. "We will be inquiring him (owner) further....we have not yet got the car, but have information about it, we are tracking it." Police are investigating the case and are also taking all the necessary measures to see to it that there is no disturbance to peace and order, he said, as he appealed to social media users and media to show restraint about sharing certain information, which may hamper investigation.
Noting that the father of the deceased Fazil has requested for inquiry from a higher ranking official, the Commissioner said, following this request, he has made an order appointing ACP North Mahesh Kumar as the investigating officer.
He also warned that police are registering cases against those spreading fake, offensive and inflammatory messages on social media or the internet or making such statements. "Eight member team is watching such social media activities in Mangaluru Commissionerate limits and things are getting documented."

The Mumbai police have launched a manhunt for two suspected "Bangladeshi terrorists" carrying Indian passports, who were scheduled to fly to Serbia from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, but were barred from boarding the flight, an official said on Saturday.
According to the police, the Foreign Return Citizen (FRC) desk of the airport had received an email on July 18, informing them that two men travelling with Indian passports under the names of Sujan Sarkar and Sameer Roy were "Bangladeshi terrorists".
The sender of the email also urged the authorities to arrest the duo, the official said.
On receiving the email, all the concerned agencies, including the police, were alerted about the two suspects and a search was launched for them, he said.
During the enquiry, the police found out that the duo had been at the airport on July 18 to board a flight to Serbia, but the airline authorities had barred them from travelling, after they failed to furnish some documents, the official said.
The police suspect that the duo was still in the city and have initiated a search for them, he said.
It is suspected that the duo were carrying fake passports made by an agent and a rival agent may have sent the email to the airport authorities, the official said, adding that no FIR has been registered in this regard so far.

Unknown motorcycle borne assailants hacked a local BJP youth functionary, police said on Wednesday, as tension gripped the town with the VHP calling for bandh in some of the taluks to condemn the killing.
Police are probing various angles, including the assailants coming from neighbouring Kerala, into the killing of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha district executive committee member Praveen Nettaru.
The victim, 32, resident of Nettaru in Bellare in Dakshina Kannada district was heading home after closing his shop Akshaya Poultry Farm late Tuesday evening when the unknown assailants hacked him to death, police said.
As soon as he was attacked, he tried to escape and ran but he fell down after a blow on his head, police said.
Local residents immediately informed police, which rushed to the spot and took the blood soaked Nettaru to the hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.
Dakshina Kannada Rural district Superintendent of Police Rishikesh Bhagawan Sonawane told PTI investigations are on though there is no breakthrough as of now.
To a query on the possibility of the assailants coming from Kerala, the officer said, "that is one of the possibilities. We are working on various angles. We are on it." Following the incident, the BJP and many Hindu organisations staged a protest against the killing in front of the hospital where the body was kept.
The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has given a Bandh call in Kadaba, Suliya and Puttur Taluks of the district on Wednesday against the killing.
Local BJP leader Muralidhar Hamsatadka said the Hindus were in shock and dismay following the brutal murder of Nettaru. He appealed to the Deputy Commissioner of the district to console the bereaved family members. Following the incident, four police teams have been constituted to nab the assailants.
Security has been beefed up in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts as additional forces have been deployed to ensure law and order.
Police also suspect the murder could have been carried out due to vengeance as a youth was murdered in the region a few days ago.

A New York man working at a filming location for the TV series ``Law & Order: Organized Crime'' was shot and killed early Tuesday (19 JULY 2022) before filming was scheduled to start for the day.
According to police, Johnny Pizarro was found at about 5:15 a.m. on a residential street in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the head and neck.
The 31-year-old Queens resident was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police were investigating and hadn't released information on suspects or a motive.
News photos from the scene showed police tape blocking off a street where traffic cones stood in spots where cars normally would be parked. No filming was going on at the time of the shooting, according to an NBC spokesperson.
The network confirmed that Pizarro was a crew member for the series, a spinoff of the long-running ``Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.'' It is in production for its third season and scheduled to air this fall.
"We were terribly saddened and shocked to hear that one of our crew members was the victim of a crime early this morning and has died as a result,'' NBC and Universal Television said in a statement.
"We are working with local law enforcement as they continue to investigate. Our hearts go out to his family and friends and we ask that you respect their privacy during this time.''

An Indian couple was arrested at the Delhi airport for allegedly trying to smuggle 45 hand guns into the country, customs officials said on Wednesday.
The accused, who arrived here from Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City on Monday, have been placed under surveillance by the officials. The husband and wife duo were accompanied by their infant daughter who has been handed over to her grandmother. 
The male passenger was carrying two trolley bags, which were handed to him by his elder brother who had arrived from Paris almost at the same time and day as the couple's flight from Vietnam landed here, the customs department said in the statement.
The elder brother, after handing over the trolley bags, “slipped out of the airport,” it said.
The woman passenger too was active part of this plan as she helped her husband remove and destroy the tags of both the trolley bags that contained the guns, the statement said.
"Further, examination of these two trolley bags carried by passenger -1 (male passenger) resulted in the recovery of 45 pieces of assorted brand guns having approximate value of Rs 22.5 lakh," it said.

I've never been more ashamed in life. If Baidullah Khan is still active in Dibrugarh, what are we doing? What are you doing?"
Sarma added, "You're the SP, and still Baidullah Khan reached here - the central area of the town. What is the point of appointing you then? The death is secondary. My first question is how did Baidullah Khan get here?"
"My brain is not working. What are they saying? What am I hearing? Is this an incident in Assam or Jammu and Kashmir? This is one case. How many Baidullah Khans must be roaming around in Dibrugarh," the CM said.

A case of brazen gun violence has emerged from the national capital. Four minor boys were caught on camera apparently shooting at a man in Delhi's Jahangirpuri area.The incident occurred on 15 July, and the assailants were subsequently apprehended. CCTV visuals showed the victim sitting in front of a shuttered building. Young children could also be seen sitting nearby.
Suddenly, some boys approach the man, shoot, and flee. The victim has reportedly been hospitalised. He had allegedly beaten up the father of one of the assailants around 7 months ago, and the boys shot him to take revenge.
Delhi police have filed a case under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code, which relates to attempted murder.

 A man was arrested for allegedly opening fire and injuring three children whom he had asked not to play on the street during a birthday party in northeast Delhi, police said on Monday.
The accused has been identified as Aamir alias Hamza (22), a resident of New Seelampur. He works as a casual labour and had been involved previously in another case, they said.
The incident took place on August 6 while the accused was attending a function organised by a man named Qutubddin to celebrate the birth of his child, police said.
After receiving information about the firing incident, the police rushed to the spot and found that the injured children had already been shifted to the JPC hospital by their parents and locals, a senior police officer said.
The complainant Wasim told the police that with a pistol in his hand, Aamir had started scolding the children for playing on the street and asked them to leave, he said.
When Wasim noticed this, he had a heated argument with Aamir following which the accused fired a bullet, police said.
"The bullet rebounded and the three children, aged between 7-13 years, sustained injuries. After firing the bullet, Aamir fled the spot," the officer said.
All the injured children are out of danger now, police said.
A case was registered under sections of attempt to murder (307) of the Indian Penal Code and other sections of Arms Act at Seelampur police station, he said.
"During investigation, a police team scanned and analyzed footage from CCTV cameras in the vicinity to ascertain the escape route of the culprit.
"Technical surveillance as well human sources were also deployed. Within hours, police team zeroed-in on his location and Aamir was apprehended," said Sanjay Sain Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast).
A sophisticated semi-automatic pistol, loaded with two live cartridges, was recovered from his possession, he said.

A school principal in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra has been booked for allegedly siphoning Rs 11.46 crore of the Mid-Day Meal scheme.  An FIR registered against Chandrakant Sharma notes that he bungled the money with the help of officials of the basic education department and his family members.   A resident of Firozabad district, Sharma was working as a principal at a Primary School in Jajupur.   Police said to swindle the money, the Principal formed an NGO for which he used fake ration and identification cards in 2017.   According to the FIR, the teacher had made his father the president of the NGO, his mother the manager and secretary, and his wife a treasurer. He also designated other family members and relatives to various positions in the NGO. With the help of some officials, the police said, Sharma’s NGO got contract for distribution of Mid-Day Meal in basic education department schools of Firozabad.  He had withdrawn an amount of Rs 11,46,48,500 from the bank account of his NGO with the help of the officials and staff and transferred that amount into the bank accounts of his wife and children in Agra banks.

A video of a teacher repeatedly slapping a girl student at a primary government school surfaced on social media, prompting the authorities to suspend the educator in Madhya Pradesh's Ratlam district, an official said on Sunday.
An inquiry has also been initiated against the teacher J K Mogara, after the purported video of the incident that took place at a government primary school at Mamatkheda was circulated on social media on Saturday, district education officer (DEO) K C Sharma said.
The authorities have also received a complaint that girl students have not been attending the primary school for Classes 1 to 5, as the teacher would allegedly slap them, the official said.
Following the complaint, the teacher was suspended and an inquiry has been initiated against him.
According to sources, while the incident took place on Thursday, the video surfaced on social media on Saturday.
In another video shot on the same day, the teacher was seen slapping some other girls.
Talking to reporters, the victim said several girls don't come to school for the fear of being slapped by the teacher and this was a regular occurrence.
