Omicron variant: all you need to know about missing inbound passengers

After India confirmed its first Omicron Covid cases, concerns have been raised over foreign arrivals particularly those from 'at risk' countries.

Consequently, some passengers have reportedly gone untraceable across the country after arriving from international journeys. Here are some key developments about these passengers going missing one after another.

In Uttar Pradesh's Meerut, 13 of nearly 300 people on flights originating outside the country disappeared after providing false addresses and contact information. Out of these, seven flew in from South Africa, where the Omicron variant was first reported.

On the other hand, as many as 10 passengers, reportedly South Africans have gone missing from Bengaluru airport. The police and state health department are reportedly working to track them down.

Recently, 30 foreign returnees went untraceable in Andhra Pradesh out of whom 9 returned from South Africa.

Chandigarh officials have registered a case against a woman who returned from South Africa and broke quarantine rules on landing in India.

Although there have been no major episodes of severe infection among those diagnosed with the new variant globally, the fear persists.
