Pesky Calls Epidemic: 95% Mobile Users In India Get Unwanted Calls Daily; No Help From DND

Pesky Calls Epidemic: 95% Mobile Users In India Get Unwanted Calls Daily; No Help From DND

If you’re an Indian mobile subscriber, chances are you've had your day interrupted by these pesky calls. Whether it’s about a 2BHK in Gurgaon, a credit card you don’t need, or an insurance policy you never asked for, these intrusive calls have become a daily headache for millions across the country.

According to a recent survey by LocalCircles, a staggering 95% of mobile subscribers in India are receiving these unwanted calls daily. What’s more alarming? 77% of us get three or more of these calls every single day!

Even if you’ve registered for Do Not Disturb (DND), you’re not safe. The survey found that 96% of DND-registered subscribers are still plagued by these calls. Six months ago, this number was slightly lower, but now, it’s clear that the effectiveness of DND services is dwindling.

But where are these calls coming from? The financial sector alone has seen a surge in unsolicited calls, jumping from 54% to 66% in just six months. Add real estate to the mix and it jumps the figure soars to 88%.

You might be wondering, hasn’t the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) done anything about this? Well, they have. From proposing higher tariffs for excessive calls to monitoring heavy callers, they’ve tried. But the impact? Limited, to say the least.

So, why does this problem persist? One major reason is the outsourcing of lead generation. Companies are hiring contractors who use personal mobile numbers to make these calls. This makes it incredibly difficult for regulators to track and block the source of the calls.

TRAI has proposed several measures, like disconnecting services of entities found making spam calls and even linking such numbers to Aadhaar to prevent reactivation. But for now, these calls keep coming, and our frustration keeps growing.

So, what can we do? For now, stay vigilant, report those calls, and hope that stricter regulations come into play soon. Because let’s face it, we all deserve some peace from these pesky calls.
