Why women & young people lost more jobs during the pandemic | DataBaaz

Almost 15 million jobs have been lost between December 2019 and 2020. Jobs for women and young people have been disproportionately impacted by Covid19 in India. Indian Women Out Of Jobs: Covid19 Lockdown Impact

Earlier 27% of women were in jobs in India. Covid-19 lockdown slashed that to 20%. &ldquo;This is because sectors in which women are employed-services, food, travel and hospitality have been adversely affected,&rdquo; says Saumya Kapoor Mehta, head of IWWAGE, New Delhi.
She points out that the other aspect of the problem is work-from-home which adds the burden of domestic chores like looking after children and the elderly. Therefore, the number of women engaged in unpaid care work, which was 94% last year, has soared. Whereas only 20% of Indian men are involved in unpaid care work.

India&rsquo;s digital divide has meant many have not been able to access online learning, and are thus effectively shut out of learning. Now, calls to reopen schools are growing as India emerges out of the second Covid wave. What should be the plan in case of future Covid-19 outbreaks? How can the digital and gender divides in education, deepened by the pandemic, be addressed from a policy perspective?
