Nandita Das&rsquo; &lsquo;Zwigato&rsquo;, starring comedian Kapil Sharma, received positive reviews from the audience as well as critics upon its release, but the film still hasn&rsquo;t been released on OTT.
Now, &lsquo;Zwigato&rsquo; has earned a spot in the permanent core collection of the Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Reacting to this news, Nandita Das thanked the Academy and said that this is a happy reminder that the film is relevant.
The director-actor said that she believes only when stories are authentic and rooted in their own contexts, they transcend cultures and borders and become part of world cinema.
&lsquo;I am glad that it will be available in the library for students, filmmakers and writers. The overwhelming response that we have got for Zwigato from both audiences and critics has opened unexpected doors such as this,&rsquo; she wrote.
Taking a dig at OTT platforms, she wrote, &lsquo;Hope OTT platforms are reading this! I think it&rsquo;s time to give the audience the opportunity to see Zwigato.&rsquo;
Nandita Das has co-written &lsquo;Zwigato&rsquo; with Samir Patil.
&lsquo;Zwigato&rsquo; wasn&rsquo;t a hit at the box office, but it received praise for Kapil&rsquo;s impactful performance and its unique storyline.
Kapil also took to Instagram to thank the Academy. He wrote, &lsquo;Thank you Academy for this honour. #Gratitude #Oscar.&rsquo;
&lsquo;Zwigato&rsquo; debuted at the Toronto Worldwide Film Celebration in 2022. It was released in theatres on March 17, 2023.

Actor-comedian Kapil Sharma starrer 'Zwigato' has got an exemption from entertainment tax in Odisha. On Wednesday, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik approved the proposal for the same. The official Twitter handle of the CM announced the news and wrote, 'CM @Naveen_Odisha has approved a proposal to waive off the entertainment tax for 'Zwigato', a film based on the struggling life of a food delivery boy and his family. The Hindi language film has been directed by @nanditadas and its entire shooting has been done in #Bhubaneswar.'
'State Govt is promoting #Odisha as a destination for film shooting via proactive policies. It will promote tourism potential &amp; provide job opportunities for talented youth. CM appreciated efforts of Ms Das for promoting #Odisha as a destination to shoot commercial movies,' the statement concluded.
Directed by Nandita Das, &lsquo;Zwigato&rsquo; shows Kapil in the role of a food delivery agent, who takes up the job after he loses his position as the floor in charge at a factory. When his wife, played by Shahana Goswami, also starts a new job, his rating as a food delivery agent goes down as he struggles to find the reason behind it.

Kapil Sharma's new film Zwigato was released in cinemas on Friday. Nandita Das' directorial debuted with 42 lakhs on the first day. The actor-comedian's performancein the film, which stars Shahana Goswami as his wife, has been praised.&nbsp;
On Saturday, trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the film's opening day figures on Twitter, writing, 'Released at limited screens [409] and shows, Zwigato puts up a dull score on day 1... The buzz is positive, but it needs to translate into foot traffic over the weekend... Friday, 42 lacs. India biz (business).'
Kapil, who hosts his hit comedy show The Kapil Sharma Show, said he related to Zwigato's story because of his own experience.
"I used to be a Coca-Cola employee. When we first arrive in Mumbai, we all do odd jobs here and there. The product was transported in trucks. Back then, there were no apps. However, when Nandita ma'am approached me and told me about all the difficulties delivery guys face, I could really relate to that story," he told PTI in an interview.
Kapil, who hosts his hit comedy show The Kapil Sharma Show, said he related to Zwigato's story because of his own experience. The trailer of &lsquo;Zwigato&rsquo;, starring Kapil Sharma, was launched on Wednesday during an event in Mumbai. At the press conference, the actor-comedian and director Nandita Das talked about their forthcoming movie and also shared the response it received in South Korea when it premiered at the 27th Busan International Film Festival in October 2022.

&lsquo;Zwigato&rsquo;, directed by Nandita Das and starring Kapil Sharma, will be premiered in India at the 27th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), the makers informed on Thursday. The film has been a part of international cinema events such as the Toronto International Film Festival and the Busan International Film Festival. The film has been chosen as the opening film in the Kaleidoscope section of the festival on December 10 and it will again be screened on 13th December.

'Zwigato' features Kapil Sharma as a former floor manager at a factory but due to the pandemic he loses his job and opts to work as a food delivery person exploring the world of ratings and algorithms. Shahana Goswami plays his wife, a homemaker, who starts working to support his income. Set in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, the film is about ordinary people and the struggles they go through in their daily lives.
Earlier, Nandita in an interview revealed the reason for choosing comedian Kapil Sharma as the lead role. She said, &lsquo;The film attempts to make visible what&rsquo;s hidden in plain sight. And for this, the cast and crew has serendipitously come together. One day, Kapil Sharma popped up on my screen! I hadn&rsquo;t seen his show, but I could see him wholly representing the &lsquo;common man&rsquo;, despite not being one anymore.&rsquo;

Comedian-actor Kapil Sharma is all set to make a comeback to the big screen with Nandita Das&rsquo; 'Zwigato', along with Shahana Goswami. In a recent interview, Shahana, who plays the role of Kapil's wife in the film, revealed that she wasn&rsquo;t sure about his acting skills before working with him.
Speaking with Indian Express, Shahana said, 'I&rsquo;ve worked with Nandita Das before on 'Firaaq'. 'Zwigato' is my second innings with her, my first with Kapil (Sharma). With Nandita, there is a very easy flow that I have. We are friends and I love working with her as an actor. She teaches me a lot as a director. With Kapil, it was so effortless. I didn&rsquo;t know how he&rsquo;d be. He&rsquo;s such a big star. I didn&rsquo;t know if he&rsquo;d be able to act. Nandita told me that he&rsquo;s playing this character in Zwigato, he&rsquo;d be able to do it.'
She added that when Nandita first told her about Kapil, she was like, &lsquo;Kapil?&rsquo;, but then she thought that it was a good idea. She didn&rsquo;t know him and had not even seen his show but when she met him, she was convinced that he&rsquo;ll nail it because he&rsquo;s a very real person.
In 'Zwigato', Kapil portrays the role of a guy who lost his job as a factory floor manager and later joins a food delivery service company as a delivery guy. The film follows his life and the tough situations he faces at work.
&lsquo;Zwigato&rsquo; was screened at Toronto International Film Festival and at Busan International Film Festival this year. The film is yet to release in India.
Earlier, Kapil talked about the film and revealed why he signed up for an independent film. He said that he has nothing to lose even if the film fails to impress the audience. On the other hand, the makers are yet to finalize a release date of &lsquo;Zwigato&rsquo;.
