The American government on 27 February 2023 refused to take a definite stance on the origin of the Covid-19 pandemic, days after a report by the US Department of Energy said that a laboratory leak of the virus was the most likely cause.

National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby said, "There's not been a definitive conclusion, so it's difficult for me to say, nor should I feel like I should have to defend press reporting about a possible preliminary indication here."
"What the President wants is facts. He wants the whole government designed to go get those facts, and that's what we're doing. And we're just not there yet. And when we're there yet and if we have something that is ready to be briefed to the American people and the Congress, then we're going to do that," he said.
Kirby said that President Joe Biden made trying to find the origins of COVID a priority right when he came into the office. And he&rsquo;s got a whole-of-government effort designed to do that, he said.

China on Monday rejected a new US report that claims the Covid-19 virus may have leaked from a bio laboratory in Wuhan, saying the origins-tracing of the pandemic "is about science and should not be politicised."
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the international experts have considered the theory that the pandemic might have leaked from a Chinese laboratory as "extremely unlikely".
She said it is a science-based, authoritative conclusion reached by the experts of the WHO-China joint mission after field trips to the lab in Wuhan and in-depth communication with researchers.
Mao's remarks came in response to the US Department of Energy's (USDE) latest assessment that the coronavirus mostly likely leaked from a bio laboratory in Wuhan. The Energy Department now joins the Federal Bureau of Investigation in saying the virus likely spread via a mishap at a Chinese laboratory, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The Energy Department's conclusion is the result of new intelligence and is significant because the agency has considerable scientific expertise and oversees a network of US national laboratories, some of which conduct advanced biological research.&nbsp;
Over two years since Covid-19 was first detected in Wuhan, the question of how the virus first emerged remains a mystery.

In what appears to be an astonishing revelation, a US-based scientist, who worked at a research lab in China's Wuhan, has said that COVID-19 was a "man-made virus" that leaked from the facility.
COVID was leaked from Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), a state-run and funded research facility, two years ago, the New York Post reported, quoting US-based researcher Andrew Huff's statement in the British newspaper The Sun.
In his latest book, "The Truth About Wuhan," epidemiologist Huff claims that the pandemic was caused by the US government's funding of coronaviruses in China.
Excerpts of Huff's book have been out in the UK-based tabloid The Sun.
According to the New York Post report, Huff is the former vice president of the EcoHealth Alliance, a non-profit organisation based in New York that studies infectious diseases.
Huff claims in his book that China's gain-of-function experiments were conducted with inadequate security, resulting in a leak at the Wuhan lab, according to New York Post.
The Wuhan lab has been the centre of heated debates over the origins of COVID, with both Chinese government officials and lab workers denying that the virus originated there.
For more than a decade, the organisation has been studying several coronaviruses in bats with funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and has forged close ties to the Wuhan lab.
The NIH is the primary agency of the United States government responsible for biomedical and public health research.&nbsp;
Huff, who worked at EcoHealth Alliance from 2014 to 2016, stated that the non-profit assisted the Wuhan lab for many years in developing the "best existing methods to engineer bat coronaviruses to attack other species"
"China knew from day one that this was a genetically engineered agent," Huff wrote.&nbsp;
"The US government is to blame for the transfer of dangerous biotechnology to the Chinese.
"I was terrified by what I saw," he told The Sun, as per New York Post. "We were just handing them bioweapon technology."

“Our party must be united to lead the people to face major challenges effectively, defend against major risks, overcome major barriers and resolve major contradictions. We must press on with great struggles under new historical characteristics,” Xi wrote, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported on Sunday.
He, however, did not elaborate.
His comments exhorting the 96-million-member strong Communist Party of China (CPC) came as it is set to hold the once-in-a-five-year Congress on October 16 here which would discuss the new political and economic policy frameworks for the future and also endorse Xi for a new five-year term in power or perhaps for life.
If endorsed, Xi will become the only leader after the party's founder Mao Zedong to continue in power beyond the stipulated 10-year term. Xi will be completing the 10-year term this year.
His call for the party's unity came as China under his leadership faced increasing isolation with growing adversity with the US, EU and Japan over Taiwan besides growing domestic pressures owing to economic slowdown exasperated by his zero COVID policy forcing lockdowns of various cities over recurring spikes of the virus.
Xi said that the party members must demonstrate tenacity and persistence to complete the journey.
This required the party to stay focused and have conviction in the path it had taken, he added.
“We will not walk back to the old path of isolation and dogmatism, nor shall we ever take the evil path of changing flags,” he said, using a metaphor common in revolutionary language to mean changing the political system.
Ahead of the Congress, a number of high-level security officials who were reportedly part of a “political clique” against Xi were either indicted or sentenced to death on charges of corruption and misuse of power.
Since he came to power in 2012, Xi has carried out an anti-corruption campaign in which over a million officials, including dozens of top military officers, were punished.
Critics of Xi say the anti-graft campaign which is still continuing has enabled him to consolidate his hold on the party and the military.
The CPC holds a Congress every five years. But this year's Congress is regarded as significant, as it is a leadership change year for the century-old party.
On Friday, Premier Li Keqiang, in a speech to the annual National Day gala, urged local governments not to stand by idly but take immediate action to stabilise the economy.
Stating that time waits for no man – Li, currently, the number two leader after Xi, urged officials to focus all their efforts to improve the economy.
“Our economy right now is facing many challenges and difficulties. Time waits for no man. We must focus all efforts on implementing measures to stabilise the economy. We still have the confidence and ability to keep our economic growth within the accepted range,” Li, who will step down after the Congress, said.

China began its most extensive COVID lockdown in two years Monday to conduct mass testing and control a growing outbreak in Shanghai as part of the nation's “zero-COVID” strategy. 
Shanghai, China's financial capital and largest city with 26 million people, had managed its smaller previous outbreaks with limited lockdowns.
The citywide lockdown that is being conducted in two phases will be China's most extensive since the central city of Wuhan confined its entire population for 76 days in early 2020.  
Shanghai's Pudong financial district and nearby areas will be locked down from Monday to Friday as mass testing gets underway. In the second phase of the lockdown, the vast downtown area west of the Huangpu River that divides the city will start its own five-day lockdown Friday. 
Residents will be required to stay home and deliveries will be left at checkpoints to ensure no contact. All non-essential business will be closed and public transport will remain suspended. Shanghai detected 96 new local infections and 4,381 asymptomatic cases of infection on Tuesday.  China has reported more than 56,000 confirmed cases nationwide this month. 
China has called its long-standing “zero-tolerance” approach the most economical and effective prevention strategy against COVID-19.
