In an unending saga of the Wrestling Federation of India, the United World Wrestling has threatened to reimpose its earlier ban on the Indian body for inteference from the government.&nbsp; And this time, along with the WFI, the international body might suspend Indian wrestlers too, jeopardising the country's Olympic plans.&nbsp; This move by the world wrestling unit comes after the Delhi High Court recently asserted that it will not recognise or provide support to the WFI. The court also asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to file an affidavit detailing the reasons behind the dissolution of the ad-hoc panel on March 18, 2024. The committee was in-charge of WFI's affairs. In an email statement, UWW chief Nenad Lalovic reiterated the organisation's stance to not tolerate any third-party interference in the workings of the national wrestling body.&nbsp; 'In case any decision or order should be made against your federation, and a third party be designated to run the daily affairs of our sport in India in violation of the UWW Statutes, UWW would have no other option than to re-impose a temporary suspension of your federation until further notice, and which, this time, could maybe include your athletes,' Lalovic wrote.&nbsp; The statement also detailed how the wrestlers' participation in the final Olympic Games Qualifying Tournament in May would also be affected and how this suspension, if imposed, would also attract the attention of the International Olympic Committee, who may also consider further action.&nbsp; What is WFI's international and national status now?&nbsp; The WFI's international suspension was lifted by the UWW in February 2024 following which the IOC also reinstated it, therby dissolving the ad-hoc committee in March.&nbsp; However, WFI remains suspended in India by the Sports Ministry for violating the National Sports Code in December 2023.&nbsp; India's Wrestling Dreams for Paris India have secured three Olympic spots so far in the women's wrestling while the men are yet to open their accounts.&nbsp;

Sanjay Singh, the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), has made a definitive statement regarding the Olympic trials, emphasising that only the champions from the senior wrestling nationals in Pune will be considered. In an interview with the Indian Express on January 29, Singh expressed his commitment to this decision, highlighting the importance of the Pune event in selecting India's Olympic contenders.
"Our winners come from 25 state units, and there are wrestlers who need jobs and our certificates will help them. Those who are already employed with Railways and Services already have jobs and didn&rsquo;t need to compete here (in Pune) so they didn&rsquo;t care. In all this, the ones suffering are wrestlers competing in Pune. But I promise that those who go for the Olympics will be from the Pune Nationals only," Singh stated, underscoring his stance on the matter.

Addressing queries about the involvement of former WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in the federation's activities, Sanjay Singh clarified, "He is just an ex-president. He's taken sanyaas from wrestling. There&rsquo;s no involvement as an office bearer." Singh's appointment as WFI president had previously stirred controversy due to his close association with Brij Bhushan.
Furthermore, Singh responded to concerns regarding the safety of female wrestlers in the wake of sexual allegations against Brij Bhushan during the latter's tenure. "Yes, there are concerns but that is why we have appointed a sexual harassment committee at WFI," he assured, highlighting measures taken for the welfare of athletes.
Singh also revealed that discussions are ongoing with the Sports Ministry to lift the suspension of the WFI, expressing optimism about regaining authority within the next ten days.

Cracks of the Brij Bhushan vs Wrestlers divide are now visible in the state wrestling federations.&nbsp; In a puzzling move, the Haryana Wrestling Federation has announced two separate trials for the same Senior National Championships.&nbsp; The state body is divided into two factions - one in favour of the BJP MP and one against.&nbsp; As per a Hindustan Times report, the president of Haryana Wrestling Association (HWA), Rohtash Singh has called for trials to be held between January 17 and 18 in Sonepat. Meanwhile, general secretary Rakesh Singh has announced that trials will take place on January 13 and 14 in Hisar.&nbsp; Rohtash Singh reportedly was a staunch Brij Bhushan supporter before switching sides and now leans towards the protesting wrestlers.&nbsp; Rohtash also ran for the post of joint secretary in the national body elections but lost.&nbsp;
The general secretary, on the other hand, has the new Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Sanjay Singh's backing.&nbsp; The tussle in the state body is a direct result of the mess at the top.&nbsp; The IOA-led ad-hoc panel had announced National Championships from February 2-5 in Jaipur but the suspended WFI had rejected these dates, calling them illegal.&nbsp; The WFI went on to state that it would conduct separate championships.&nbsp; Anurag Thakur-led Sports Ministry suspended the newly-elected WFI on December 24 citing violation of the National Sports Code and the WFI constitution.&nbsp; But the national body has stated it does not recognise the suspension nor the IOA-constituted ad-hoc panel and plans to challenge the suspension in court.&nbsp;

The Union Sports Ministry on Sunday suspended the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and newly elected chief Sanjay Singh's presidency also stands cancelled.

The ministry, in an official statement, cited the hasty announcement of national competitions without following proper procedures as the reason for the suspension.

In the aftermath of Sakshi Malik hanging up her boots and Bajrang Punia returning his Padma Shri following the election of Sanjay Singh as the Wrestling Federation of India President, the Union Sports Ministry on Sunday suspended the newly elected WFI.
Brij Bhushan's close aide Sanjay Singh was recently elected as the WFI chief but his presidency also stands cancelled.
The Sports Ministry suspended the Federation after the newly-elected body made a "hasty announcement" of organising the U-15 and U-20 nationals "without giving sufficient notice to wrestlers" to prepare.
"The new body has not followed the WFI constitution. We have not terminated the Federation but suspended till further orders. They just need to follow the due process and the rules," a sports ministry official told PTI.
The source further explained the reasons for suspension.
"Sanjay Kumar Singh, newly-elected president of WFI announced on 21.12.2023, the day he was elected as president, that U-15 and U-20 nationals for Wrestling will take place in Nandini Nagar, Gonda (UP) before the end of this year.
"This announcement is hasty, without giving sufficient notice to wrestlers who are to take part in the said nationals and without following the provisions of the constitution of WFI.
"As per clause 3 (e) of preamble of constitution of WFI, object of the WFI, among others, is to arrange holding of Senior, Junior and Sub Junior National Championships as per UWW Rules at places selected by the Executive Committee," said the ministry's source.

The WFI elections have been delayed once again after the Punjab and Haryana High Court put a stay on the voting on August 12.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday stayed the much-anticipated Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections slated for Saturday till further orders following a petition filed by the Haryana Wrestling Association (HWA).
The order came following a petition filed by the HWA, challenging the move to allow Haryana Amateur Wrestling Association to cast votes in the WFI polls.
Advocate Ravinder Malik, representing the Haryana Wrestling Association which is headed by Member of Parliament Deepinder Hooda, said the HWA is a registered society in the state and is affiliated with the WFI.
As per rules and the constitution of the WFI, any registered affiliated body can send two representatives to cast their votes for the WFI polls, he stated.
The HWA advocate said that one more body, Haryana Amateur Wrestling Association, has claimed that it was affiliated with the WFI as well as Haryana Olympic Association.
Haryana Amateur Wrestling Association further claimed that the HWA has no business participating in the election process because it is not affiliated with the WFI.
"The returning officer has given the finding in favour of Haryana Amateur Wrestling Association, saying they fulfill the condition of affiliation with WFI as well as Haryana Olympic Association," said the advocate.
"We have challenged the returning officer's order in the HC, saying that the Haryana Amateur Wrestling Association may be affiliated with the WFI but it is not affiliated with the HOA, meaning they are not entitled to participate in the poll process," said Malik, representing HWA.
"In case, Haryana Amateur Wrestling Association is allowed to participate in the election process, then it will cause prejudice as well as the WFI elections will be illegal," he said.
The court has taken note of it and said lest it should cause prejudice to anybody, prima facie, it seems Haryana Amateur Wrestling Association is not eligible to cast votes.
The court of Justice Vinod S Bhardwaj of the HC has stayed the elections of the WFI.
The Indian Olympic Association-appointed ad-hoc panel governing the WFI had initially scheduled the elections for July 6 but was forced to reschedule the polls to July 11 after disaffiliated state bodies from Maharashtra, Haryana, Telangana, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh approached it for a hearing, claiming that their dismissal was not appropriate.
The panel heard the aggrieved representatives of the state bodies but the polls could not go ahead even on July 11 with the Gauhati High Court staying the elections after the Assam Wrestling Association (AWA) sought the right to participate in the poll process.
The Supreme Court then paved the way for elections to be held on August 12 after staying the Gauhati High Court order before Friday's development had again put a question mark on the poll process.&nbsp;
The global governing body for wrestling, United World Wrestling, had previously issued a warning to the WFI regarding the possibility of suspension if the elections continued to be pushed back. It remains to be seen whether any actions will be taken by the international organization in light of these developments.

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections have been delayed further with the Gauhati High Court scheduling July 28 as the next date for hearing the petition filed by the Assam Wrestling Association (AWA).
Originally slated for July 11, the WFI elections were put on hold after the Gauhati High Court granted a stay on the polls in response to the AWA's plea seeking participation rights in the election process.
The Assam Wrestling Association argued that it should be recognized as an affiliated member of the WFI with voting privileges. Despite the state association's Executive Committee recommending its recognition on November 15, 2014, the national federation denied its affiliation.
Devajit Saikia, the advocate representing AWA, informed PTI that the case has been listed for the next hearing on July 28.
"The WFI (ad-hoc committee) lawyer didn't appear before the court. Representative of the sports ministry, which is among the respondents, sought one week's time to file their affidavit. Accordingly, the court asked them to file the affidavit by July 26 and listed the matter for July 28," Saikia shared.
The reason behind the absence of the IOA ad-hoc committee's lawyer, another respondent along with the Sports Ministry, is still unknown as panel head Bhupender Singh Bajwa could not be reached for comment.
"It is the job of the ad-hoc panel to respond to the petition. We did not have a role in that. Our body is suspended, how we could interfere in this? We had made our position clear to the Returning Officer that Assam was never a full member, it had an associate membership without voting right," stated an official from the previous WFI setup.
Interestingly, the WFI conducted elections in 2015 and 2019, yet the Assam association did not approach the court then to demand full membership.
On June 25, the Gauhati High Court imposed a stay on the polls, which was the last day for submitting names for the electoral college.
The petitioner argued that unless their association is affiliated with the WFI and they are permitted to nominate their representative to the electoral college, the election process should be halted.
Before its suspension by the Sports Ministry, the WFI had set May 7 as the election date. Following a meeting with protesting wrestlers, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur announced that WFI elections would take place by June 30.
However, the IOA subsequently declared that elections would be held on July 4, while the Returning Officer rescheduled it for July 6. After five disaffiliated state bodies claimed eligibility for voting, the Returning Officer further postponed the elections by five days, setting July 11 as the new poll date.&nbsp;

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has asked the secretary general of WFI to hand over the official documents including financial instruments to its ad-hoc panel, making it clear the outgoing office bearers shall have no role in the running of the federation.
The WFI said it has no issues in obeying the IOA order since they were already co-operating with the authorities.
The IOA had formed an ad-hoc committee to manage the day-to-day affairs of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and also conduct due polls of the NSF.
The ad-hoc committee was formed by the IOA at the behest of the Sports Ministry after several top wrestlers returned to the protest site at Jantar Mantar here last month, demanding the arrest of WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for allegedly sexually harassing women grapplers.
The IOA issued on Friday issued a letter saying that all administrative, financial and regulatory roles will now be performed by the ad-hoc committee.
"In pursuance of the above (order of the IOA dated May 12, 2023), it is hereby clarified that the Ad Hoc Committee appointed by the IOA for the discipline of Wrestling shall carry out all the duties and responsibilities of the National Sports Federation (WFI) as enunciated in the Sports Code.

"With the Ad hoc Committee being in existence, the outgoing office bearers of the WFI shall have no role with respect to the exercise of any function of the NSF for discipline of Wrestling and shall not perform any administrative, financial, regulatory or any other role," said the IOA letter, which has also been marked to the ministry and the WFI secretary general.
It said that outgoing office bearers should immediately hand over all necessary documents, including website login and participation details of Indian wrestlers, among others to the ad-hoc committee.
"The outgoing office bearers of the WFI are directed to hand over all official documents, including website management, financial instruments, login details for making entries for the participation of Indian sportspersons in international events, etc., to the Ad hoc Committee, forthwith," the IOA letter added.
WFI secretary general V N Prasood said they have no issues in sharing all the relevant documents with the IOA panel.
"It's normal procedure. When the oversight committee was formed, then also we had given them all the necessary filed through our staff. Now this ad hoc panel is there and we can give them whatever documents they need to manage WFI," Prasood told PTI.
"It's not an issue. Our term is already over and the IOA and the government is managing, it's normal procedure to ask for these documents." The ad-hoc committee has already finalised the rules and regulations related to conduct the selection trials for picking the Indian teams for the 2023 U-17 and U-23 Asian Wrestling Championships.
The trials will be held in Patiala from May 17.
The Asian Championships for Under-17 and Under-23 wresters will be held in Bishkek from June 10-18.&nbsp;

The MC Mary Kom-led panel that was earlier asked to submit its report in 4 weeks, has been given another 2-week extension and will now submit its report by March 9.&nbsp;
The committee responsible for the day-to-day functioning of WFI was formed after a sit-in protest by top Indian wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia &amp; Sakshi Malik, who were demanding the removal of Singh as the federation's president.
Since the formation of the committee, the top Indian wrestlers have not competed at the international meets, missing the Ranking Series events in Zagreb and Alexandria.

After a marathon 7-hour meeting with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, protesting wrestlers called off their agitation against WFI President Brijbhushan Singh.

Protesting wrestlers called off their agitation late on Friday night after a marathon 7-hour meeting with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur.
In a joint press conference held by Thakur and the protesting grapplers, Olympic bronze medalist Bajrang Punia announced that they are calling off their protest after assurances from the government.&nbsp; "The protest is over. We did not want to sit on dharna but 'paani sar se ooper chala gaya tha'. The government has assured us safety and security, we have been threatened by the WFI president in the past also," Bajrang said.
Sports Minister Anurag Thakur confirmed to the press that an oversight committee will be formed that'll investigate the allegations against WFI President Brijbhushan Sharan Singh.
He said, "It has been decided that an oversight committee will be formed, names for which will be announced tomorrow. The committee will complete its investigation within four weeks. It will thoroughly probe all the allegations be it financial or sexual harassment that has been levelled against WFI and its chief."&nbsp;
Thakur also said that Singh will step aside and cooperate with the investigation.
"Till the investigation is over, he (Singh) will step aside and cooperate with the investigation and the oversight committee will run the day-to-day affairs of WFI," Thakur added.

He has been the President of the Wrestling Federation for 11 years. A 6-time Member of Parliament, Brijbhushan currently is the elected representative from the Kaiserganj Lok Sabha constituency.
Having joined student politics in the 1980s, Singh fought his first election in 1991. While he has been a BJP MP for 5 of his 6 terms, in 2009 he won his Lok Sabha seat from a Samajwadi party ticket.
A seasoned politician, the sexual harassment allegations against him add to a long list of misdeeds he's been accused of.
Singh was an accused in the Babri Masjid demolition case. He has also had a case against him for harbouring associates from the underworld in the 90s.
He has been accused of dacoity, attempt to murder and rioting as well. In 2021, he was caught on camera, slapping a young wrestler at the Under-15 Championship in Ranchi.
While he survived all those incidents in the past, the newfound allegations might just take him down this time around.

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has rejected all the allegations, including that of sexual harassment against its president Brijbhushan Sharan Singh.
In a letter written to the Sports Ministry, the wrestling body said the protest at Jantar Mantar was a 'personal, hidden agenda' of wrestlers.
'The protest is not in the best interest of the Wrestlers nor for promoting good Wrestling in India, but it has some personal as well as hidden agenda to dislodge the current fairest and strict management of WFI,' the wrestling body said in its response to the Sports Ministry.
Responding to the charges of mismanagement, WFI wrote they 'are managed by an elected body as per its constitution, and therefore, there is no scope for arbitrariness and mismanagement in WFI by anyone individually, including the president.'
The WFI sent its reply on Friday evening after being asked by the sports ministry to respond to the allegations within 72 hours.

After days of protests by star wrestlers in the national capital, President of the Wrestling Federation of India called a press conference on 20 January 2023.
Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is also a BJP MP, said he would address the media at 4 pm at a wrestling training centre in Nawabganj, Uttar Pradesh. He has been accused of sexually harassing women wrestlers.
In a Facebook post, Singh said that he will expose a "political conspiracy" being hatched against the sport of wrestling. He added that he would expose those "playing with the honour of women wrestlers".
Singh's declaration came a day after protesting wrestlers met Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur. They refused to back down from their demand that the government immediately disband the Wrestling Federation of India.
The marathon meeting began around 10 pm on 19 January, the second day of the wrestlers' protest against WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The wrestlers left Thakur's house at 1:45 am and did not speak to the reporters waiting outside.
Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia, Ravi Dahiya, Sakshi Malik and world championship medallist Vinesh Phogat were part of the meeting.
