WPI Inflation 2023: September's WPI inflation has risen to -0.26% from -0.52% in August. However, the numbers continue to stay negative for the sixth consecutive month since April 2023. The WPI inflation stood at 10.55% in September 2022.&nbsp;
Deflation in September is primarily due to a fall in prices of chemical and chemical products, mineral oils, textiles, basic metals and food products as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

<h3>WPI Inflation September 2023: Cost of Living</h3>
Food index for the month of September stood at 1.54%, compared to 5.62% in August; while WPI for primary articles is at 3.7% in September, against 6.34% in August; and fuel and power inflation for September is at -3.35%, compared to -6.03% in August.&nbsp;
<h3>WPI Inflation September 2023: Retail Inflation</h3>
The retail inflation for September eased to 5.02%. In August, the headline print was 6.83%, compared to 7.44% in July, according to data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.&nbsp;

The wholesale price based inflation remained in the negative territory for the fourth straight month in July at (-)1.36 per cent on easing prices of fuel, even though food articles turned costlier. This is significantly higher than the -4.12% reported in June.
"Decline in the rate of inflation in July, 2023 is primarily contributed by fall in prices of mineral oils, basic metals, chemical &amp; chemical products, textiles and food products," said the Commerce and Industry ministry.&nbsp;
The food inflation shot up 14.25% in July against 1.32% in June. The inflation in primary articles was considerably higher at 7.57% as compared to July last year. As compared to June 2023, the inflation in this category was 8.05%. Primary articles in WPI includes Minerals, food particles and vegetables.
The all commodity index of the WPI rose 1.95% Month-On-Month in July while the food index was up 7.13%. Within vegetables, the index of tomatoes was up an astonishing 307% month-on-month. On the whole, vegetable inflation -which measures the change in price compared to the same month last year - rose to 62.12% in July from -21.98% in June.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) last week kept interest rates unchanged at 6.5% for the third straight meeting but signalled tighter policy if food prices drive inflation higher.

The wholesale price-based inflation eased for the eight consecutive month to 4.73 per cent in January on easing prices of manufactured items, fuel and power.
The wholesale price-index (WPI) based inflation rate was 4.95 per cent in December 2022 and 13.68 per cent in January 2022.
Inflation in food articles, however, rose to 2.38 per cent in January, from (-) 1.25 per cent in December, 2022.
"Decline in the rate of inflation in January, 2023 is primarily contributed by mineral oils, chemicals &amp; chemical products, textiles, crude petroleum &amp; natural gas, textiles, and food products," the Commerce and Industry Ministry said on Tuesday.
Inflation in pulses was 2.41 per cent, while in vegetables was (-) 26.48 per cent. Inflation in oil seeds was (-) 4.22 per cent in January, 2023.
Fuel and power basket inflation eased to 15.15 per cent, from 18.09 per cent in December 2022. In Manufactured products it was 2.99 per cent, against 3.37 per cent in December, 2022.
The deceleration in WPI comes in contrast to the retail inflation data released on Monday which showed consumer price index (CPI) or retail inflation rose to 6.52 per cent in January, from 5.72 per cent in December, 2022.
