India's wholesale inflation surged to 0.53% in March, marking an uptick from the previous month's four-month low of 0.20%. &nbsp;Notably, vegetable prices soared by 19.52%, a stark contrast from the -2.39% deflation recorded in the same period last year. The WPI for onions skyrocketed by 56.99%, contrasting sharply with the -36.83% deflation in March 2023. This rise stems from increased prices across various sectors including food articles, electricity, crude petroleum &amp; natural gas, machinery &amp; equipment, and other manufacturing. The Wholesale Price Index, a key indicator of inflation, tracks the change in prices of goods traded in bulk by wholesale businesses. In March 2024, prices of crude petroleum and natural gas saw a substantial increase of 1.35%, followed by food articles at 1%, minerals at 0.58%, and non-food articles at 0.44%. However, the price of coal experienced a slight decline of -0.15% compared to the previous month.
Among the 22 National Industrial Classification two-digit groups for manufactured products, 11 groups witnessed a price increase, while nine saw a decrease, with two groups remaining unchanged. Sectors such as food products, motor vehicles, rubber and plastics products, and chemicals observed month-over-month price hikes.
Conversely, fabricated metal products, basic metals, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and wearing apparel reported price declines during the same period.
This surge in wholesale inflation raises concerns about the potential impact on consumer prices and overall economic stability. Authorities may need to closely monitor these trends and consider appropriate measures to address inflationary pressures while ensuring sustainable economic growth.

Wholesale price-based inflation rate declined by (-) 3.48 per cent in May, a 3-year low, on easing prices of food, fuel and manufactured items.
The wholesale price index (WPI) based inflation rate has been in the negative territory for the second straight month. In April it was (-) 0.92 per cent.
In May, 2022 WPI inflation was at 16.63 per cent.
The May, 2023 data print of (-) 3.48 per cent is the lowest WPI print recorded since May 2020, when wholesale inflation was at (-) 3.37 per cent.
Inflation in food articles eased to 1.51 per cent in May, against 3.54 per cent in April.
"Decline in the rate of inflation in May, 2023 is primarily contributed by fall in prices of mineral oils, basic metals, food products, textiles, non-food articles, crude petroleum &amp; natural gas, and chemical &amp; chemical products," the commerce and industry ministry said on Wednesday.
Fuel and power basket inflation eased to (-) 9.17 per cent in May, from 0.93 per cent in April.
In manufactured products, the inflation rate was (-) 2.97 per cent in the month under review, as against (-) 2.42 per cent in April.
The deceleration in WPI comes in line with the easing of May retail inflation, which came in at an 25-month low of 4.25 per cent.

India's wholesale inflation in April has fallen below 0 to -0.92% for the first time July 2020. In March, the WPI was at 1.34%. As per data from Commerce Ministry, the WPI food inflation dropped to 0.17% in April from 2.32% in March. The WPI edible oils inflation stood at -25.91% in April, while the primary articles inflation was at 1.6% at the same time.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, the WPI for fuel and power was at 0.93% and the manufactured products stood at -2.42%. As per the Commerce Ministry, the decline in WPI inflation is due to the fall in prices of basic metals, food products, mineral oils, textiles, non-food articles, chemical and chemical products, rubber and rubber products and paper and paper products.
This fall in WPI is expected to bring down retail prices as well. In April, the retail inflation in India dropped to 4.7%, which is an 18 month low due to fall in prices of vegetables, oils and fats.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The wholesale price-based inflation eased for the eight consecutive month to 4.73 per cent in January on easing prices of manufactured items, fuel and power.
The wholesale price-index (WPI) based inflation rate was 4.95 per cent in December 2022 and 13.68 per cent in January 2022.
Inflation in food articles, however, rose to 2.38 per cent in January, from (-) 1.25 per cent in December, 2022.
"Decline in the rate of inflation in January, 2023 is primarily contributed by mineral oils, chemicals &amp; chemical products, textiles, crude petroleum &amp; natural gas, textiles, and food products," the Commerce and Industry Ministry said on Tuesday.
Inflation in pulses was 2.41 per cent, while in vegetables was (-) 26.48 per cent. Inflation in oil seeds was (-) 4.22 per cent in January, 2023.
Fuel and power basket inflation eased to 15.15 per cent, from 18.09 per cent in December 2022. In Manufactured products it was 2.99 per cent, against 3.37 per cent in December, 2022.
The deceleration in WPI comes in contrast to the retail inflation data released on Monday which showed consumer price index (CPI) or retail inflation rose to 6.52 per cent in January, from 5.72 per cent in December, 2022.

The wholesale price-based inflation rose 0.16% in August as food items and manufactured products turned costlier, the commerce and industry ministry said in a statement on Monday.
The Wholesale price index based&nbsp;inflation was in the negative territory for four straight months from April&nbsp;to July. It was 1.17% during the corresponding month of the last year.
Inflation in food articles during August stood at 3.84% as the rate of rise in potato prices stood at 82.93%. Inflation in onion was 34.48%.
Manufactured products witnessed hardening of inflation at 1.27% in August against 0.51% in July.
