The days of remote work might be numbered, with giants such as Amazon doubling down on strict return-to-office policies.
Amazon, the tech behemoth, recently announced a significant shift in its return-to-work stance. Starting January, corporate employees will be required to work from the office five days a week, compared to the current three-day hybrid model.
In a memo, CEO Andy Jassy stated that the move aims to rebuild Amazon&rsquo;s unique corporate culture, which has been fraying due to remote work. While there are some exceptions for extenuating circumstances, this is a hard reset on their work model.
Amazon isn&rsquo;t the only company pushing stricter office policies. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in the UK has also introduced a new rule requiring employees to spend at least 60% of their time in the office or with clients.
To ensure compliance, PwC will be tracking employees' locations and sharing the data with them on a monthly basis.
PwC&rsquo;s Managing Partner, Laura Hinton, believes this approach is essential for maintaining client service, coaching, and professional development.
Even Walmart has joined the conversation with a relocation mandate, pushing employees to work from their office campus. Walmart&rsquo;s efforts to support employees with childcare facilities, fitness centers, and community-focused amenities reflect the growing corporate shift back to office spaces.owed suit, mandating employees to come to the office at least three days a week or face consequences, such as losing their leaves.

HCL Technologies has asked all employees who are part of Digital Foundation Services (DFS) to come to office at least three days a week beginning February 19, according to a communication by Noida-headquartered IT company.
The move comes at a time when more and more tech companies are shifting to workplace-based models, insisting that employees be physically present in the office cubicles for a certain number of days every week to enhance teamwork, facilitate face-to-face interactions, and strengthen workplace culture.
As such, senior managers and leadership team in DFS (those above a certain position and level) have transitioned to a hybrid model and work from office at least three days in a week. The recent communication states that from February 19, the same hybrid work model will be applicable to all employees of DFS.
All DFS employees, irrespective of their band, will be required to work from their designated HCLTech offices for a minimum of three days in a week, the memo said, adding that designated managers will be required to ensure that roster compliance is updated on the designated portal.
HCL's DFS division has 80,000 employees.
Further, the communication said that freshers undergoing training will be required to work from office all five days a week, in order to get a complete learning experience.
"Non-compliance to the...guidelines will be treated as unauthorised absence and call for disciplinary action in line with company policy," it said.
When contacted, an HCLTech spokesperson said that the company follows a hybrid work model, wherein employees are required to work from office three days in a week.&nbsp;

India has dropped to the 64th position in the Global Remote Work Index, which evaluates countries on cyber safety, economic safety, digital and physical infrastructure, and social safety. India's decline can be attributed to underperformance in digital infrastructure (77) and social safety (74). The report highlights India's digital infrastructure as one of the least developed globally, ranking 95th, and notes expensive and low-quality internet connections (78th and 70th, respectively).

In social safety, India is perceived as one of the most isolated countries with a low personal rights index (88) and limited inclusiveness (65). In terms of cyber and economic safety, India's performance is average, with rankings of 56 and 55, respectively.

Trouble for WeWork:&nbsp; The company has been in trouble since Neumann's forced departure in late 2019 following WeWork's failed IPO, in which the company's valuation fell from $47 billion to less than $10 billion. WeWork has lost billions of dollars during the first six months of this year, with macroeconomic conditions weakening demand for its shared office spaces, the company told regulators.&nbsp;

Work flexibility is the most crucial parameter for Indian jobseekers, much more than compensation and benefits, according to a survey by global job site Indeed.&nbsp;
As per the survey, 71 per cent of jobseekers chose flexibility as the top parameter. This includes ability to work from home, set your own hours, and take breaks as needed.
The survey 'The Job Search Process: A Look from the Inside Out' aims to gain insights into the preferences, challenges, and aspirations of jobseekers amidst global economic shifts.

Around 70 per cent of Indian jobseekers consider work modes, such as hybrid or remote work arrangements, and 69 per cent factor in the proximity of the job location.
As per the survey, 67 per cent of jobseekers consider the compensation offered, including the salary, benefits, health insurance, leave policies and other learning and development programmes associated with the job.
"It is imperative that we see the future of work as a journey and not as a destination. Streamlining processes, building aspirations and empathetic consideration can really empower jobseekers and unlock a diverse pool of talent," said Sashi Kumar, head of sales, Indeed India. "Hence, employers who want to attract and retain top talent need to be aware of these preferences and be willing to adapt," Kumar added.
The survey also revealed that most jobseekers (63 per cent) prefer to work in a hybrid setting, where they can work from home some days and from office on other days. Larger organisations are more likely to offer the desired flexibility, with 51 per cent of employers stating that they do.
The survey further noted that 82 per cent of blue-collar workers say that fair compensation is what they look for in new jobs. Given the nature of their jobs, a significant proportion also seek physical safety (73 per cent).
Job seekers often feel the need for more transparency and clarity about the job and the interview process, according to the survey. They are also concerned about the fairness of the process, including potential discrimination based on race, gender, or other factors, it said.

Offices in major cities globally are at a risk of losing $800 billion of value due to remote work, a report by McKinsey Global Institute said. The report also highlighted the loss &nbsp;landlords are facing from post-pandemic changes in employment trends.
Covid-19 pandemic that had pushed hybrid work culture has driven the need for office spaces down. The report further added that this loss in valuation represents a 26% decline compared to 2019 which can further expand to 42%.
The consultation firm futher noted that remote work is also affecting the value of retail and residential real estate as people&rsquo;s new habits influence where they shop and live.&nbsp;
The report predicts that in a moderate scenario, demand for office space will be 13% lower by the end of the decade. Meanwhile, the attendance of employees remain lower than 30% compared to the period before pandemic and only 37% of the employees are back at office every day.&nbsp;
Now, lower attendance has driven down rents in real terms. U.S city San Fransisco has seen a decline of 28%, while New york has seen 18% decline. Meanwhile, European centers such as Paris, London and Munich have been more resilient.

Largest tech company TCS on Tuesday said attrition among its women employees has raced past the same for men, hinting that the end of work-from-home may have a role to play in it.
Its chief human resources officer Milind Lakkad said that historically, the attrition among women employees &ndash; who constitute over 35 per cent of the over 6 lakh-strong workforce &ndash; has been lower or similar to that of men, and called the development as "unusual".
"...I would think working from home during the pandemic reset the domestic arrangements for some women, keeping them from returning to office even after everything normalised," he said in an interview published in the company's annual report.
Lakkad acknowledged that the higher attrition among women is a "setback" to the Tata Group company's efforts to promote gender diversity and added that the company is focusing on reversing the trend.
The annual report did not reveal the exact attrition number on the basis of gender. Its overall attrition peaked in the middle of the fiscal gone by and came down to over 20 per cent at the end of March.
Lakkad said focused leadership development programmes like 'iExcel' are driving change on this front. The annual report said the flagship executive leadership development programme for women has completed 22 editions and 1,450 women leaders have benefitted from it.
Women made up nearly a fourth of the leadership positions fulfilled with internal candidates in FY23, even though they account for only 14 per cent of the applicant pool, Lakkad said.
"This speaks well of the quality of the women candidates in our leadership pool as well as the supportive attitudes of our business leaders in promoting diversity," he added.
Women constituted 38.1 per cent of TCS' net hires in FY23, Lakkad said.
'Rebegin' -- a TCS initiative for experienced women professionals re-entering the workforce after a break -- saw nearly 14,000 job applications in FY23, the annual report said.
Of the nearly 30,000 employees classified as senior management, almost 4,000 or over 13 per cent were women, the annual report said.
It also said that TCS has introduced a policy on flexible work arrangements, which provides necessary support and flexibility for caregivers of young children, expectant women employees, and persons with disability.

Assessing&nbsp;rich data on the emails, calendars, instant messages, video/audio calls and workweek&nbsp;hours&rsquo;&nbsp;of its&nbsp;own&nbsp;workers, the tech behemoth published the peer-reviewed study&nbsp;in the journal&nbsp;Nature Human&nbsp;Behaviour.&nbsp;

According to the study, people worked longer hours during the pandemic, driving up&nbsp;the average workweek inside the company by 10 per cent.&nbsp;But it may not mean people were working more, said the researchers. The increase could be due to&nbsp;the spreading out of work across the day with breaks or interruptions for non-work activities.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The study&nbsp;also&nbsp;found that formal business groups and informal communities within the company became less interconnected and more siloed. Overall, the employees added fewer new collaborators and parted away from fewer existing ones.&nbsp;
But sceptics warn that the study was conducted between&nbsp;December 2019 and June 2020, which was an early period in the outbreak. With so much uncertainty and fear in the world,&nbsp;collaboration&nbsp;wasn&rsquo;t exactly a priority&nbsp;then&nbsp;and not many had started using&nbsp;video conferencing&nbsp;tools&nbsp;like Zoom.

The concept of a workplace&nbsp;or physical office&nbsp;where every staffer is expected to show up for&nbsp;8&nbsp;to&nbsp;9 hours&nbsp;every day of the week, is one that many of us have lived, enjoyed&nbsp;or&nbsp;tolerated for the&nbsp;better part of our memory.&nbsp;&nbsp;
But the coronavirus pandemic and its accompanying stay-at-home orders&nbsp;have completely changed&nbsp;the way we work.&nbsp;The lockdown normalised working from home and this has prompted a&nbsp;sense&nbsp;of flexibility&nbsp;and more control&nbsp;for workers.&nbsp;As the virus spread slows down, more and more employers are asking their staff to resume in-person work.

However, findings of a new&nbsp;World Economic Forum (WEF) survey revealed that most people are not ready to go back&nbsp;to the way things used to be. Of the 12,500 workers surveyed,&nbsp;the majority (or 66%) of people want employers to allow flexible or hybrid working models going forward.&nbsp;
The echos in support of flexibility were strongest among women, parents of young children, adults under 35 and those with higher education or income.&nbsp;However, not everyone wants to work from home all the time. People who want flexible work advocate for 2.5 work from home days on average, while Indians, in particular, want 3.4 work from home days a week.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The survey of workers in 29 nations also found that&nbsp;nearly a third (or 30%) of workers are ready to quit or consider looking for another job if they were forced to go back to the office full-time.&nbsp;
Around half (52%) of the people said they miss their colleagues, whereas 65%&nbsp;said they are more&nbsp;productive with a flexible work schedule.&nbsp;
But some experts&nbsp;have&nbsp;warned&nbsp;against this&nbsp;overenthusiastic&nbsp;love for flexibility.&nbsp;An International Labour Organisation report said that Gen-Z or early-career workers lose out on the networking and peer support that was normal prior to the pandemic.&nbsp;There is also the risk of leaders losing empathy and becoming out of touch with&nbsp;their employees and their individual needs. Additionally, it could become hard for some people to maintain a work-life balance as the lines between work and home get&nbsp;blurred. This&nbsp;may lead to burnout and mental health issues.
