With 3 educational degrees, Aaliya Mir was already an overachiever, but she wanted something more from life. So, she obtained a diploma, and became a wildlife conservationist - saving animals, and breaking glass ceilings at the same time.
Aaliya is from Srinagar, and is a graduate in Science and Education, and post-graduate in Mathematics. But her calling lay elsewhere. She also has a diploma in Disaster Management with specific emphasis on animal health, and has been working with Wildlife SOS since 2002.
She met Wildlife SOS' founders in Delhi, and inspired by the case of a black bear being killed in a village, joined the cause. She started as a volunteer and then began undertaking diverse projects in Jammu and Kashmir.
She heads WSOS' conservation programme in the Union Territory, which is home to diverse, including the Hangul stag. Aaliya, an expert at handling human-reptile conflicts, is specially fascinated by snakes, calling them victims of ignorance.
Apart from her work rescuing wild animals, Aaliya also works as an educationist, spreading awareness through workshops.
Aaliya's husband, a wildlife veterinarian, fully supports her in her cause.

Africa's elephant populations have become more endangered, owing to threats of poaching and loss of habitat, a new report by International Union for Conservation of Nature has revealed. Now, the African forest elephant is critically endangered while the African savanna elephant is endangered- they were previously classified as a single species. These species are facing extinction within a reasonable time, which experts suggest, could be as little as 10 years. The number of African forests elephants have fallen by more than 86% over a 31 year period while savanna elephants have fallen by more than 60% over a 50 year period. Experts have warned that extinction of Africa's elephants will have consequences for the planet, since they play an important role in ecosystems and economies.

There were at least 12,852 leopards in the country in 2018 compared to 7,910 leopards estimated in 2014, according to the ministry&rsquo;s &lsquo;Status of Leopards in India 2018&rsquo; report released on Monday.


Earth Day 2019's message is to 'Protect Our Species'. Eco resorts, lodges and conservation-minded travel companies are looking after the wildlife in the surrounding environment. Some of these are giving travellers the opportunity to play a part in making a difference. 
Guests of the San Ignacio Resort Hotel in Belize can help conserve green iguanas through the resort’s Green Iguana Conservation Project focusing on the incubation, hatching, rearing and release of this endangered species. Bawah Reserve, tucked into Indonesia’s remote Anambas Archipelago, works to protect and improve the archipelago’s ecosystem, both on land and beneath the surface of the ocean. On Earth Day, guests of Bawah Reserve will be able to take part in a conservation dive, participate in developing the coral tree nurseries and assist in the reserve’s sea turtle conservation efforts.

They plan to undertake a key camera-trap survey in Kruger National Park to combat the poaching of leopard skin which is used in religious and cultural ceremonies of local communities.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has launched the 'Asiatic Lion Conservation Project' to protect the last ranging free population of Asiatic Lions. The project will include modern surveillance, research studies and disease management. The species has been driven to extinction due to excessive hunting. With certain small measures, the population has increased to over 523 in the Gir Protected Area Network.
