The fires continued to rip through the United States' second-largest city for the sixth day, reducing whole communities to scorched rubble and leaving thousands without homes.
Massive firefighting efforts have staunched the spread of the Palisades Fire, which was looming toward upscale Brentwood and the densely populated San Fernando Valley.
But conditions are set to dramatically worsen, with "extreme fire behavior and life threatening conditions" over the coming days.
Winds up to 70 miles (110 kilometers) per hour mean a "particularly dangerous situation (PDS)" will be declared from early Tuesday, said National Weather Service meteorologist Rose Schoenfeld.
These gusts could fan flames and whip up embers from existing burn zones into new areas, firefighters warned.
Los Angeles County Fire Department chief Anthony Marrone said his department had received resources including dozens of new water trucks and firefighters from far afield and was primed to face the renewed threat.
Questioned whether hydrants could run dry again, as they did during the initial outbreak of fires last week, Mayor Karen Bass replied: "I believe the city is prepared."
There was frustration for evacuees who were told they would not be returning home until at least Thursday when winds subside.
Some have queued for hours in the hope of getting back to homes they fled to pick up medication or a change of clothes.

But Sheriff Robert Luna said escorts into these areas were being suspended Sunday because of the winds and dangerous conditions among the wreckage, as well as the need to retrieve victims' bodies.
Teams with cadaver dogs were carrying out grid searches with the grim expectation that the confirmed death toll would rise.
Several more arrests of looters were made, including one burglar who had dressed as a firefighter to steal from homes.
Nighttime curfews in evacuated zones have been extended, and additional National Guard resources have been requested.
Prevented from entering an evacuation zone, Altadena resident Bobby Salman, 42, said: "I have to be there to protect my family, my wife, my kids, my mom and I cannot even go and see them."

The Palisades Fire has now consumed 23,700 acres (9,500 hectares) and was just 11 percent contained.
Video footage showed "fire tornadoes" -- red-hot spirals that occur when a blaze is so intense it creates its own weather system.
The ferocious fire also left streaks of molten metal flowing from burnt-out cars.
But containment of the 14,000-acre Eaton Fire in Altadena had improved, figures showed, with 27 percent of its perimeter controlled.
The County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner published a list of fatalities without giving details of any identities. Eight of the dead were found in the Palisades Fire zone, and 16 in the Eaton Fire zone, the document said.
The total number of residents under evacuation orders dropped to around 100,000, from a peak of almost 180,000.
The sudden rush of people needing somewhere to live has posed a growing problem for the city, with reports of illegal price gouging from opportunistic landlords.
"I'm back on the market with tens of thousands of people," said a man who gave his name as Brian, whose rent-controlled apartment had burned. "That doesn't bode well."
California Governor Gavin Newsom vowed the city would rebuild, saying there would be a "Marshall Plan" -- a reference to the US support that put Europe back on its feet after World War II.
"We already have a team looking at reimagining L.A. 2.0," he said.

They join teams from all over California and across the western United States who have come to help out.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday even offered to send 150 personnel to California from his war-ravaged country.
"The situation there is extremely difficult, and Ukrainians can help Americans save lives," he wrote on social media.

"There are approximately 20,000 affected citizens under evacuation orders and evacuation warnings," said Captain Jennifer Seeto of Los Angeles County Sheriff.
"Fire can be extremely unpredictable, and we highly encourage residents in the fire areas to be prepared. Have a plan and heed our evacuation warnings and orders."
Deputies had gone door-to-door urging people to get out as the flames began to spread on Monday night.
Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart said the fire had been "traumatic," but vowed that the city and its people would not be defeated.
"That's the way it is here in Malibu. It burns, it comes back, and we're resilient and strong."
Actor Dick Van Dyke, who celebrates his 99th birthday on Friday, posted on Facebook that he and his wife had fled their Malibu home.
"Arlene and I have safely evacuated with our animals except for (a cat that) escaped as we were leaving. We're praying he'll be OK and that our community... &nbsp;will survive these terrible fires," he wrote.
The city, which sits a short drive from Hollywood's major studios, has been home to some of the biggest names in show business, with present and former residents including Lady Gaga, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Aniston and Cher.

By Tuesday evening, the so-called Franklin Fire had swelled to more than 2,800 acres (1,150 hectares) and was still raging out of control, fanned by powerful seasonal winds that have led to forecasters hoisting a "red flag warning."
Los Angeles County fire chief Anthony Marrone said 1,500 firefighters were continuing to battle the flames, with the help of aircraft that were dumping thousands of gallons (litres) of water and retardant from the air.

Wildfires are a feature of life in California and other parts of the US West, and are often exacerbated at this time of year by Santa Ana winds, which blow dry desert air from the interior.
Human-caused climate change is known to increase the likelihood and the severity of fires, with evolving weather patterns leading to longer, hotter dry periods that desiccate vegetation.

Firefighters in Argentina were on Sunday continuing to battle a devastating wildfire in Argentina's northeastern province of Corrientes.
According to a report by the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) released Friday, the fire has burnt around 800,000 hectares (8,000 square kilometres) of land, or nearly 10% of the region's area.
"This is atypical, historic, never happened (before), we never lived (with) something like this,"&nbsp;&nbsp;said local resident, Jorge Ayala.
"We were really overwhelmed. This is what I can tell you know. This a blow for the province (of Corrientes)."
The blaze was threatening wildlife in the Iber&aacute; National Park, the largest wetland in the country and one of its largest ecosystems.

Many animals have been burned by flames or poisoned by smoke, while others have been run over on roads while trying to escape the fires.
Corrientes Governor Gustavo Valdes declared the province an "ecological and environmental disaster zone."

The&nbsp;Amazon&nbsp;jungle&nbsp;may no longer&nbsp;be&nbsp;the&nbsp;carbon sink of the world,&nbsp;finds an&nbsp;alarming&nbsp;new study.&nbsp;Published&nbsp;in the <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03629-6">journal Nature</a>,&nbsp;the&nbsp;research says that parts of the rainforest are now emitting more carbon dioxide&nbsp;and greenhouse gases&nbsp;than they&nbsp;can&nbsp;absorb. This is&nbsp;mostly&nbsp;due to&nbsp;large fires,&nbsp;often set&nbsp;off&nbsp;by humans.

The study adds&nbsp;to&nbsp;growing&nbsp;fears of the potentially&nbsp;catastrophic impact of deforestation,&nbsp;land burning and droughts on the Amazon&rsquo;s fragile ecosystem which is home to nearly a fifth of the world&rsquo;s land species.&nbsp;&nbsp; The research team found that&nbsp;eastern Amazonia, which has been subjected to most&nbsp;deforestation, warming and moisture stress&nbsp;now&nbsp;emits 410 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year but is able to only absorb&nbsp;about 120 million metric tons. This leaves out a whopping&nbsp;290 million metric tons in net emissions.&nbsp;

The study&rsquo;s lead author explained that&nbsp;in places where deforestation is 30% or more, the carbon emissions were&nbsp;10 times&nbsp;compared to&nbsp;places with less than 20% deforestation.&nbsp;
What&rsquo;s more, a similar study&nbsp;published in&nbsp;Nature Climate Change earlier this year used a different assessment method but came to a very similar conclusion.&nbsp;In more damning evidence, a 2020 study had said that&nbsp;the entire Amazon, which is about twice the size of India, could soon flip to become a net carbon source by as early as 2050.&nbsp;
But&nbsp;the battle may not be over yet. Offering some hope, the team&nbsp;underscored&nbsp;two possible solutions to&nbsp;help&nbsp;reverse the damage. They suggest curbing&nbsp;illegal logging and other large-scale human disturbances of forests as well as investigations into&nbsp;fire-fighting&nbsp;solutions for the Amazon.
