The wholesale prices in January increased by a mere 0.27% compared to the same period last year. However it eased compared to december when the index rose to 0.73% touching a 9-month high.

The 0.27% gain in January is lower than economists' expectations of 0.53% as per a poll conducted by Reuters. The month-on-month change in WPI index for January witnessed a contraction of (-)0.33% from a contraction of (-)1.12% in the preceding month

The WPI inflation which was in the negative territory for 7 months from April to October turned positive in November.&nbsp;
"Positive rate of inflation in January, 2024 is primarily due to increase in prices of food articles, machinery &amp; equipment, other manufacturing, minerals, other transport equipment etc," the release said.
The retail inflation also eased to a three-month low of 5.1% in January mainly on account of lower food prices. Inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was at 5.69% in December 2023 and 6.52% in January 2024. In August 2023, inflation touched a high of 6.83%

India's wholesale inflation in December rose to 0.73% touching a 9-month high as against 0.26% in November. The WPI Inflation which was in the negative territory for 7 months from April to October turned positive in November.
"Positive rate of inflation in December 2023 is primarily due to increase in prices of food articles, machinery &amp; equipment, other manufacturing, other transport equipment and computer, electronics &amp; optical products etc," the commerce and industry ministry said in a statement on Monday.
<h3>WPI Inflation in December 2023</h3>
Food Inflation in December rose to 9.38% from 8.18% in November 2023. Similarly, the inflation of primary articles increased to 5.78% as against 4.76% in November. Meanwhile, the fuel and power sector contracted to -2.41% &nbsp;and the manufacturing sector contracted (-)0.71%. Inflation in vegetables was 26.3%, while in pulses it was 19.6% in December.

However, the inflation has remained within the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) tolerance band of 2-6%. In the December policy meeting, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) left the inflation aim unchanged at 5.4%. The Reserve Bank in its bi-monthly monetary policy last month held interest rates steady and flagged risks of rising food inflation in November and December.&nbsp;

WPI October 2023: The wholesale price index-based inflation remained in the negative territory for the seventh straight month in October at (-) 0.52%, on easing prices of food items.
The WPI-based inflation rate has been in the negative zone since April and was at (-) 0.26% in September 2023.
In October last year, WPI was at 8.67%.

Inflation in food articles eased to 2.53% in October. It was 3.35% in the previous month.
"The negative rate of inflation in October, 2023, is primarily due to fall in prices of chemicals and chemical products, electricity, textiles, basic metals, food products, paper and paper products, etc. as compared to the corresponding month of previous year," the commerce and industry ministry said on Tuesday.

The fuel and power basket inflation was at (-) 2.47% in October, against (-) 3.35% in September.
In manufactured products, the inflation rate was at (-) 1.13%, as against (-) 1.34% in September.

Wholesale inflation remained in the negative zone for the fifth straight month in August, but came in slightly higher at -0.52% compared to July.&nbsp;
The wholesale price index (WPI) based inflation rate has been in the negative since April and was -1.36% in July. In August last year it was 12.48%.
Inflation in food articles remained in double digits at 10.60% in August, lower than 14.25% in July.
"The negative rate of inflation in August 2023 is primarily due to fall in prices of mineral oils, basic metals, chemical &amp; chemical products, textiles and food products as compared to the corresponding month of previous year,&rdquo; the commerce and industry ministry said on Thursday.
Fuel and power basket inflation was at -6.03% in August, against -12.79% in July.
In manufactured products, inflation rate was -2.37%, as against -2.51% in July.
The RBI last month kept key interest rate unchanged at 6.5 per cent for the third straight meeting but signalled tighter policy if food prices drive inflation higher.
The central bank takes into account retail or consumer price index based inflation for formulating monetary policy. Retail inflation data for August came in at 6.83% in August, lower than 7.44% in July
