Nearly 100 pilot whales stranded themselves on a beach in western Australia Tuesday, and about half had died by Wednesday morning, despite the efforts of wildlife experts and volunteers to save them.

As the day progressed, the pod began moving closer to the beach, sparking the concern of conservation officers. By 4 p.m., a large stretch of the shoreline was covered in beached whales.
Western Australia state's Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions set up an overnight camp to monitor the whales.
Peter Hartley, a manager from the department, said they had counted 51 whales that had died overnight.
&ldquo;We still have 46 whales still alive, and that will be our focus today &mdash; to get them back into the water and encourage them to head off into deeper water,&rdquo; he told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. &ldquo;We are optimistic that we will save as many as we can.&rdquo; The team tasked with helping the whales includes Perth Zoo veterinarians and marine fauna experts. They have been using specialized equipment, including vessels and slings.

The whale was found offshore of Hemstead town on January 30, and the viral video has left the internet buzzing over its size. As per a BBC report, more than 14 whales have washed up on US shores since December 2022.
The unusual mortality rate of humpback whales along the eastern shores has been in news since 2016. About 178 dead humpback whales have been found on shores from Florida to Maine, according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The US agency also found that 40% of deaths were due to human interactions such as getting caught in fishing gear or being struck by ships.

None of the stranded whales could be refloated and all either died naturally or were euthanised in a &ldquo;heartbreaking&rdquo; loss, said Daren Grover, the general manager of Project Jonah, a nonprofit group which helps rescue whales.
The whales beached themselves on the Chatham Islands, which are home to about 600 people and located about 800 kilometers east of New Zealand's main islands.
The Department of Conservation said 232 whales stranded themselves Friday at Tupuangi Beach and another 245 at Waihere Bay on Monday.
The deaths come two weeks after about 200 pilot whales died in Australia after stranding themselves on a remote Tasmanian beach.
&ldquo;These events are tough, challenging situations,&rdquo; the Department of Conservation wrote in a Facebook post.
&ldquo;Although they are natural occurrences, they are still sad and difficult for those helping.&rdquo; Grover said the remote location and presence of sharks in the surrounding waters meant they couldn't mobilise volunteers to try to refloat the whales as they have in past stranding events.
&ldquo;We do not actively refloat whales on the Chatham Islands due to the risk of shark attack to humans and the whales themselves, so euthanasia was the kindest option,&rdquo; said Dave Lundquist, a technical marine advisor for the conservation department.

Scientists don't know exactly what causes the whales to strand, although it appears their location systems can get confused by gently sloping sandy beaches.
Grover said there is a lot of food for the whales around the Chatham Islands, and as they swim closer to land, they would quickly find themselves going from very deep to shallow water.
&ldquo;They rely on their echolocation and yet it doesn't tell them that they are running out of water,&rdquo; Grover said.
&ldquo;They come closer and closer to shore and become disoriented. The tide can then drop from below them and before they know it, they're stranded on the beach.&rdquo; Because of the remote location of the beaches, the whale carcasses won't be buried or towed out to sea, as is often the case, but instead will be left to decompose, Grover said.
&ldquo;Nature is a great recycler and all the energy stored within the bodies of all the whales will be returned to nature quite quickly,&rdquo; he said.

Town officials say the boat operator reported no injuries and no major damage that affected the seaworthiness of the vessel following the Sunday morning incident.
