The West Bengal government on Saturday evacuated thousands of people in South 24 Parganas and Purba Medinipur districts and urged tourists in popular sea resorts to stay away from beaches, as cyclone ‘Jawad’ loomed large over the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast.
The administration evacuated around 11,000 people from the coastal areas to safer locations, while boats with fishermen returned to the shore in Kakdwip, Digha, Shankarpur and other coastal belts, an official said. A total of 19 teams of the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed in the state in the wake of the cyclone.
Several places in the metropolis, North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Howrah and Hooghly districts received light rainfall since morning, the weather office said. It has predicted heavy rain in the next two days.

The weather department has predicted that the terrible spell is going to last a couple of more days and relief is liekly from June 12 when rain is expected in the Capital. Winds carrying dust from the Thar Desert are blowing over Delhi, Haryana and parts of Uttar Pradesh leading to a plunge in the air quality, the weather department has said. Delhi's air quality dipped into "poor" category after a long spell of good air due to the Covid lockdown. CPCB&rsquo;s hourly average recordings show that around 7pm, the pollution levels at two monitoring stations -- Chandni Chowk and ITO -- had already touched the &ldquo;very poor&rdquo; zone.

Mumbai sees worst air quality since March

Mumbai recorded its worst air quality since March on Sunday, with an AQI of 100.

Pollution levels soared in some areas of Mumbai, giving rise to hazy conditions for the second day in a row on Sunday, the Hindustan Times reported.
The skyline was engulfed by a layer of smog as the Air Quality index for PM2.5 was recorded at 100 or satisfactory.
The System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research(SAFAR) said this was the worst air quality recorded since March, stating that moisture in the air has increased its capacity of carrying pollutants
The condition at Bandra Kurla Complex was the worst, with an AQI of 304 on Sunday, followed by Navi Mumbai which had a moderate AQI&nbsp;at 156.&nbsp;
