Heavy rains over the past 24 hours have raised fears of fresh flooding and landslides in Wayanad's Mundakkai-Chooralmala region, just a year after deadly landslides claimed over 200 lives there.
District officials reported on Wednesday that the Chooralmala river is in strong spate, with muddy water flowing forcefully and breaching the banks near the Bailey bridge.
Soil stored along both riverbanks for renovation work has been washed away, causing water to spill onto the Attamala road and surrounding areas.
Local residents say they believe new landslides have occurred in the hills, particularly uphill near Punchirimattam inside forested areas. However, officials say there has been no confirmation so far.
"We have no confirmation of new landslides inside the forest, uphill Punchirimattam," the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) said.
"The loose debris from previous events is coming down with the rain. This will likely continue for some time until all eroded materials are washed off," it said.
Residents remain anxious, remembering the July 2024 disaster that flattened homes, injured dozens, and left hundreds without shelter.
District administration officials say the flash flooding is a result of widespread rain in the hills.
However, they maintain that there is no immediate danger and are monitoring the situation closely.
Further downstream, the Kabani river has also seen rising water levels at Mananthavady and Panamaram.
With the Banasura dam nearing full capacity, a red alert remains in place for nearby regions.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for 11 districts, including Wayanad, warning of moderate rainfall and strong winds up to 50 km/h over the next three hours.
Light rain and gusty winds are also expected in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday assured the timely completion of rehabilitation initiatives for landslide survivors in Wayanad.
He also directed the concerned officials to urgently provide the monthly rent for their accommodation, according to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
The directive was issued during a meeting held to assess the progress of construction work on the proposed township for survivors from the Mundakkai and Chooralmala hamlets of Wayanad, which were devastated by a landslide last year, it said.
A timeline has been set for obtaining administrative, technical, and financial approvals for the township&rsquo;s construction, the statement said.
"The rehabilitation of those affected by the landslide in Mundakkai and Chooralmala will be completed on time," the statement quoted Vijayan as saying after the meeting.
During the meeting, Vijayan also directed officials to complete all necessary procedures related to the permitted cutting of trees, reorganisation of the power distribution systems, and other related tasks.
He further instructed them to expedite the steps for providing assistance from the Chief Minister&rsquo;s Distress Relief Fund, deploying officials, and removing debris from water bodies to ensure smooth water flow, the release added.
In addition to the CM, Cabinet ministers K Rajan and K N Balagopal, Chief Secretary A Jayathilak, and other senior officials attended the meeting, the CMO statement added.

The elections in Wayanad will take place on April 26. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is up against CPI's Annie Raja and BJP's K Surendran.

Addressing the media after joining the saffron party, P M Sudhakaran said present MP and Congress candidate for the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat, Rahul Gandhi, was inaccessible to even the district leaders of the party.
"If he is inaccessible to me, imagine the situation of a common man. He was given five years. If we give another term, it will destroy the development prospects of Wayanad," Sudhakaran said.
He also challenged Gandhi to announce that he will not contest from Amethi.
Two other "prominent personalities" too joined the BJP today, the saffron party said in a release.

The Lok Sabha membership of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was restored on Monday, days after the Supreme Court stayed his conviction in a defamation case.
The Lok Sabha Secretariat issued a notification announcing that his disqualification has been revoked and his membership restored.
"In continuation of notification ... dated 24th March 2023, the Supreme Court of India has passed an order on 04.08.2023 in Special Leave to Appeal (Crl.) No. 8644/2023, staying the conviction of Shri Rahul Gandhi, Member of Lok Sabha representing the Wayanad Parliamentary Constituency of Kerala, which was ordered by the judgment dated 23.03.2023 of the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Surat...
"In view of order dated 04.08.2023 of the Supreme Court of India, the disqualification of Shri Rahul Gandhi ... in terms of the provisions of Article 102(1)(e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, has ceased to operate subject to further judicial pronouncements," the notification read.
Following the restoration of his membership, the Congress said it would like him to be a key speaker in the debate on the no-confidence motion likely to be taken up in Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
Gandhi was disqualified as a Lok Sabha member on March 24, with effect from March 23 after a Gujarat court convicted him in a defamation case and sentenced him to two years in jail.
A punishment of two years and above automatically disqualifies a lawmaker.
The Supreme Court on Friday last stayed his conviction, paving the way for the restoration of his Lok Sabha membership.

A protest march of the SFI, the students wing of ruling CPI(M), against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's office in Wayanad on Friday turned violent as a group of protestors allegedly entered the Lok Sabha member's office and vandalised it.
Police said the protest march contained around 100 Students' Federation of India (SFI) activists and they barged into the office.
"There were around 80-100 activists. As of now, eight of them are under custody. More police have been deployed," police told PTI.

Television channels aired visuals of a group of protestors creating ruckus inside the MP's office.
