Flight tracking data reviewed by The Associated Press showed a private jet that Yevgeny Prigozhin had used previously took off from Moscow on Wednesday evening and its transponder signal disappeared minutes later.
The signal stopped suddenly while the plane was at altitude and travelling at speed. In an image posted by a pro-Wagner social media account showing burning wreckage, a partial tail number matching a jet previously used by Prigozhin could be seen.
Videos shared by the pro-Wagner Telegram channel Grey Zone showed a plane dropping like a stone from a large cloud of smoke, twisting wildly as it fell. Such freefalls can occur when an aircraft sustains severe damage, and a frame-by-frame AP analysis of two videos was consistent with some sort of explosion mid-flight. The images appeared to show the plane was missing a wing.

Russia on Saturday declared an 'anti-terrorist operation regime' in Moscow and the Moscow region, after the chief of the Wagner mercenary group vowed to overthrow Russia's military leadership and claimed control of a key military headquarters in the south, reported AFP.
The defence ministry in a statement addressed to Wagner Group mercenary fighters said that they had been 'deceived and dragged into a criminal adventure' by Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin.
In a statement posted on Telegram, the ministry urged Wagner fighters to contact its representatives and those of law enforcement services and promised to guarantee their security.&nbsp;

After the chief of the Wagner mercenary group claimed control of a key military headquarters in the south, unverified videos by an independent Russian TV station published two videos of unidentified armed men lying on the ground outside of the Southern Military District headquarters in the Russian city of Rostov on June 24. The news outlet said the videos were provided by a reader, according to The Kyiv Independent.&nbsp;

President Vladimir Putin on Saturday said that an armed mutiny by Wagner mercenaries was a "stab in the back" and that the group's chief Yevgeny Prigozhin had "betrayed" Russia, vowing to punish those rebelling.
"This is a stab in the back to our country, to our nation," Putin said in an address to the nation. "What we have been faced with is exactly betrayal. Extravagant ambitions and personal interests led to treason," Putin said referring to Prigozhin.
"All those who consciously stood on the path of betrayal, who prepared an armed rebellion, stood on the path of blackmail and terrorist methods, will suffer inevitable punishment, before the law and before our people," he added.

He said his fighters would not turn themselves in at the request of Putin, as "we do not want the country to live on in corruption, deceit and bureaucracy.”

In an audio message on his Telegram channel, Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin said: &ldquo;Regarding the betrayal of the motherland, the president was deeply mistaken. We are patriots of our homeland.
He said his fighters would not turn themselves in at the request of Putin, as "we do not want the country to live on in corruption, deceit and bureaucracy.&rdquo;
