Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan and senior members of his management team held a virtual town hall with striking pilots on Wednesday. During the meet, Vistara CEO acknowledged the poor crew roster and assured that by May the concerns would be addressed.&nbsp;&nbsp;
"It was a short meeting of about 20 minutes. The airline showed a poor planning for redundancies, especially for the month of March, and this left the network in a chaos after a large number of unplanned sick leaves were reported," a person aware of the matter told Mint.
Hours after the meet NDTV reported that the airline expects to resume normal flight operations by the weekend. However, as per Mint, the airline might have to curtail its network until May to gradually stabilise the operation.
<h3>Mass sick leave by pilots</h3>
Over the past 2 days, Vistara has cancelled over 100 flights as disgruntled pilots have called in sick en masse.&nbsp;

The large number of unplanned sick leaves has made delegating the workload difficult as there were just not enough pilots to back up and the existing lot were already stretched to their limits.
<h3>Disgruntled pilots</h3>
Vistara pilots are disgruntled over the new salary structure proposed after Vistara's merger with Air India. Vistara is being merged with Air India, and the Tata Group that owns the two carriers is seeking to implement a uniform pay structure. The uniform pay structure effectively reduces the salaries of Vistara pilots by bringing them at par with Air India.
Currently Vistara pilots get a fixed salary for 70 hours. Under the new pay structure that's already followed at Air India, the pilots of Vistara get a fixed salary for 40 hours. Now, the pilots also receive payment in lieu of extra flying hours and rewards will also be given based on the years of service with the airline.
"The airline plans to rejig the network for the month of May, and this is likely to curtail the network as well, as the airline plans a gradual return to normalcy," another person told Mint.
Meanwhile, Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has asked the airline to submit a detailed report outlining the measures being taken to resolve the situation. Following widespread flight cancellations nationwide by Vistara, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has intervened. Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has asked the airline to submit a detailed report outlining the measures being taken to resolve the situation.&nbsp;
Ministry of Civil Aviation said in a post on social media platform X that it is monitoring the situation of Vistara flight cancellations. However, flight operations are managed by Airlines themselves. Airlines have to comply with DGCA norms to ensure passenger facilitation in case of cancellation or delay of flights.

Aviation watchdog DGCA has asked Vistara to submit a daily report on flight cancellations as well as delays, and is also monitoring the situation to ensure minimum inconvenience to passengers. The move comes against the backdrop of non-availability of pilots forcing Vistara to cancel a significant number of flights in recent days.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said that in view of the various flight disruptions of Vistara, it has asked the airline to submit daily information and details on the flights that are being cancelled and delayed.
The officials of the DGCA are also monitoring the situation to ensure compliance with requirements for providing facilities to passengers in case of flight cancellations and delays.
This is to minimise the inconvenience to passengers.
On Monday, the airline cancelled around 50 flights due to non-availability of crew and many flights were delayed.
Vistara, which is in the process of getting merged with Air India, has temporarily decided to cut flights amid crew issues.

Vistara will temporarily reduce flight operations due to non-availability of pilots as many first officers have been reporting sick to protest against pay revision, a development that forced the full-service carrier to cancel up to 50 flights on Monday, according to sources.
The sources in the know told PTI that more flights are expected to be cancelled on Tuesday and the number could go up to 70. Ministry of Civil Aviation on April 2 sought a detailed report from Vistara regarding flight cancellations and major delays, with the airline having cancelled or delayed over 100 flights in the past week: MoCA official to ANI A Vistara spokesperson said the airline had a significant number of flight cancellations and delays in the past few days due to various reasons, including crew unavailability.
"We have decided to temporarily reduce the number of flights we operate, to ensure adequate connectivity across our network," the spokesperson said in a statement.
The airline apologised for the disruptions but did not provide details on the number of flight cancellations.
The spokesperson also said efforts are being made to stabilise the situation and that operations at regular capacity will resume very soon.
The sources said Vistara has been facing pilot issues since the revision in monthly emoluments for first officers of its A320 fleet following the signing of new contracts.
The spokesperson said teams are working towards minimising the discomfort to the customers. We have decided to temporarily reduce the number of flights we operate, to ensure adequate connectivity across our network.
Further, the airline has deployed larger aircraft like B787-9 Dreamliner and A321neo on select domestic routes to combine flights or accommodate more number of customers, wherever possible.
One of the sources said first officers reporting sick have forced the airline to cancel flights as their salaries have been reduced significantly.
The source claimed that some components of the salary have been reduced while incentives linked to flying hours have been raised.
Details about the number of daily flights operated by Vistara could not be immediately ascertained.
In the ongoing summer schedule, Vistara will be operating 25.22 per cent more weekly flights at 2,324.
The spokesperson also said alternate flight options or refunds to affected customers are being offered and apologised for the disruptions.
"We are working towards stabilising the situation and will resume operating our regular capacity very soon," the spokesperson added.

Vistara chief executive officer Vinod Kannan has said that the airline will merge with Air India by next year. He mentioned that the legal approvals for the Vistara- Air India merger will be completed by the first half of this year and the operational merger would be completed by next year.
&ldquo;We believe all the approvals from a legal perspective should come through sometime in the first half of this year, between March to October of 2024... we are looking towards this year or early next year as the operational merger, or it could stretch to the middle of next year or 2025, subject to relevant approvals, subject to approvals from authorities, the legal merger, or the legal approval should come through soon and then we operationalise it,&rdquo; he said

Vistara is a joint venture of Tata Sons Private Limited and Singapore Airlines Limited (SIA), wherein Tata Sons holds 51% stake in partnership and Singapore Airlines owns 49% stake. The company is registered as TATA SIA Airlines Limited.

The competition committee of India approved the merger of Tata Singapore Airlines Limited&nbsp; with Air India on September 1. As part of the merger, Singapore Airlines will invest Rs 2,059 crore in Air India. Post the consolidation, SIA will hold 25.1% shareholding in Air India.
Currently Vistara operates around 325 flights and carries around 1.5 million passengers every month. Vistara CEO Kannan also mentioned that all the airline employees will continue with their job post the merger. He also said that the airline is currently in discussion with their employees over their roles after Vistara merges into Air India.

A man named Ayush Kejriwal has claimed that Vistara Airlines 'left his blind mother behind' alone on the flight and did not take responsibility for its action.
According to NDTV, the man shared his experience on Instagram and alleged that despite opting for an assisted travel plan for his mother, she was not assisted or helped and left alone in the flight in Kolkata.
He further said, his mother was told to wait to deboard, but seemingly the crew forgot about her. It was only after a cleaning staff informed the airline staff about her and she was helped.&nbsp;
Following this, the airlines apologised to the complainant.&nbsp;
