Olympics 2024: CAS Defers Verdict on Vinesh Phogat to August 16 #Paris2024

The 29-year-old was disqualified from the women's 50kg free-style final for being 100gm overweight at the time of weigh-in on Wednesday last week.

&nbsp;Suspense continued on the fate of Vinesh Phogat's appeal against her Olympic disqualification with the ad-hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport extending the time limit to deliver its decision till August 16 without specifying the reasons for continuing to defer the matter.
The 29-year-old was disqualified from the women's 50kg free-style final for being 100gm overweight at the time of weigh-in on Wednesday last week.
"The CAS ad hoc division president has allowed Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett, Sole Arbitrator in the Vinesh Phogat vs United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) matter, an extension until 6:00 pm (Paris time) on Friday, August 16, 2024," a release from the IOA said.
This is the third deferment in the case and no reasons have been given.
In her appeal, Vinesh has demanded that she be given a joint silver with Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who had lost to her in the semifinals but was promoted to the final following the Indian's disqualification.
Vinesh's legal team has French lawyers Joelle Monlouis, Estelle Ivanova, Habbine Estelle Kim and Charles Amson who helped her and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) during the filing of the application. They have been provided to her by the Paris Bar and are handling the case pro bono.
In addition, senior counsels Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania were also roped in to help her in the case.
Interestingly, the IOA had sent out invites for an online press conference with its president PT Usha and Salve at the exact same time at which the verdict was expected this evening. That invite was withdrawn within minutes of the CAS statement.

Days after the Wrestling Federation of India reiterated holding separate trials to determine the final participants of the 2024 Paris Olympics, star grappler Vinesh Phogat has urged the federation for details to be revealed officially.&nbsp; In a social media post, Phogat wrote, 'Despite being just under three months away from Paris Olympics, the Wrestling Federation of India has yet to announce the official trials format, including the date, time and venue.'&nbsp; She urged the national federation and Sports Ministry to reveal all details officially.&nbsp; Vinesh, the face of protest against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh who is facing charges of sexual harassment against female grapplers, won the 50kg Olympic quota in Bishkek last month but as per norms will have to undergo trials before the final squad is announced. In her request to the Sports Ministry, Sports Authority of India, IOA, Wrestling Federation of India, Phogat also highlighted that all federations have announced the qualification pathway and clear format way back in December, 2023, or latest in January, 2024.&nbsp; The 29-year-old also wrote, 'Our athletes have worked tirelessly to earn their quotas and they deserve assurance and support of a transparent and well-defined selection process.'&nbsp; This will be her third Olympics and she believed clarity will certainly "maximize" chances of earning medals at the Paris Games.&nbsp; Apart from Phogat, four women (Antim Panghal, Anshu Malik, Reetika Hooda and Nisha Dahiya) and one man (Aman Sehrawat) have bagged Olympic quotas so far.&nbsp;

The Indian defeated Kazakhstan&rsquo;s Laura Ganikyzy via technical superiority 10-0 in 4 minutes and 18 seconds.&nbsp; The 29-year-old will now face Aktenge Keunimjaeva of Uzbekistan in the final.&nbsp; Meanwhile, another Indian wrestler, Anshu Malik confirmed her ticket to Paris with an easy victory over Uzbekistan&rsquo;s Laylokhon Sobirova via technical superiority 11-0 in just 02:48 minutes in the women's 57 KG category.&nbsp; Vinesh Phogat returns to wrestling following a prolonged break due to the wrestlers' protest against ex-WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in 2023.&nbsp; Phogat was also underwent a surgery for a knee injury ahead of the Asian Games last year.&nbsp;

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Friday accused the WFI of trying to stop her from competing in the Olympic Qualifiers by creating logistical hurdles for her support staff, a charge vehemently denied by the federation which claimed that she applied after the deadline to send entries had expired.
The 29-year-old Phogat, who won 53kg bronze medals in the 2019 and 2022 World Championships besides a gold in the 2018 Asian Games (in 50kg), also said she is fearful of being trapped in a doping case.
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) said Phogat's request mail (for accreditation of her coach and physio) came on March 18 but by then it had already sent the entries of the players, coaches and medical staff to the world governing body UWW as the registration deadline was March 11. A WFI official said the federation sent the entries around March 15 after UWW relaxed the deadline a bit on its request because the trials were completed only on the last day of the deadline.
Phogat is eyeing an Olympic quota in the 50kg category in the Asian qualifying tournament next week in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
At the selection trials in Patiala, she had also competed in the 53kg category after the authorities allowed her but lost in the semifinals.

"Brij Bhushan and his dummy Sanjay Singh are trying in every way to stop me from playing in the Olympics. All the coaches who have been appointed with the team are the favourites of Brij Bhushan and his team, so it cannot be denied that they may mix something in my water and make me drink it during my match?" Phogat said in a lengthy post on his 'X' page.
"If I say that there could be a conspiracy to trap me in doping, then it will not be wrong," Phogat alleged that her personal coach and physio were being denied accreditation for the Asian Olympic qualifying tournament starting April 19.
"For the past month, I have been requesting the Government of India (SAI, TOPS) for the accreditation of my coach and physio. Without accreditation, it is not possible for my coach and physio to accompany me to the competition arena," she said.
"But despite repeated requests, I am not getting any concrete answer from anywhere. No one is ready to help. Will the future of players always be played with like this? "No stone is being left unturned to mentally harass us. How far is it justified to torture us like this before such an important competition?" she asked.
Making the Federation's stand clear, a WFI official, who did not wish to be named, told PTI that it had no objection if Phogat wanted to travel with her personal coach and physio but she herself has to get the accreditation from the UWW since the deadline to send entries is already over.
"Her e-mail was primarily directed to the ad-hoc panel and the TOPS CEO even as the federation was also marked in it. She sent her request on March 18 but the federation had already registered the support staff by then.
"And, we did not get any directive from the Ministry or SAI that Phogat's coach has to be added to the list. We could have tried if we had any such instruction. After all, the mail was primarily given to them.
"See, we are allowed to send three coaches for 10 players. Nine coaches are already in Bishkek for the Asian Championship for 30 wrestlers and the same set of coaches will be there for the Asian Qualifier where we will have only five women wrestlers competing. Are three coaches not enough for five wrestlers? "Why send extra coaches? But if Vinesh wants her personal coach in Bishkek, she can try to get it done from UWW. We have no objection to that." A WFI source added that the men's freestyle wrestler Deepak Punia, who won a silver medal at the 2019 World Championships had also requested for his personal coach to travel with him. One request for Greco-Roman coach Anil Pandit was also received.
"They had also sent similar emails but we did not have any instruction from the government if they needed to be accommodated. It's not that Vinesh is being singled out. We have been fair to all," said the official.
Phogat was one of the three top wrestlers of the country who led a protracted protest against former WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexually harassing women wrestlers.
After a case was filed against Brij Bhushan by Delhi Police, a local court granted him bail in July.
She wondered if the difficulties she is facing now are due to the protest she led alongside Olympic bronze medal winners Bjarnag Punia and Sakshi Malik.
"Will we face politics even before we go to play for the country because we raised our voice against sexual harassment? Is this the punishment for raising a voice against wrong in our country? "I hope we will get justice before we go to play for the country."&nbsp;

Multiple World Championship medallist Vinesh Phogat on Saturday returned her Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award, keeping the two awards lying in the middle of national capital's Kartavya Path after Delhi Police stopped her from reaching the prime minister's office.
On Tuesday, the Asian Games gold medallist grappler had decided to return her Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award to the government, saying such honours have become meaningless at a time when wrestlers are struggling to get justice.
Phogat had announced her decision in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On Saturday, she attempted to reach the prime minister's office to return her awards but the police prevented her from reaching the PMO.
As a mark of protest, she left the awards at the Kartavya Path and they were later picked up by Delhi Police.
Phogat, along with Olympic medallists Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, had protested against the election of Sanjay Singh, a close aide of former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who had been accused of sexual harassment by the three well-known grapplers.
Sakshi had also announced her retirement from wrestling soon after Sanjay Singh's appointment as WFI Chief.
However, the Sports Ministry had later suspended the newly-elected panel for not following the provisions of its own constitution while taking decisions while asking the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to constitute an ad-hoc panel to manage the affairs of the sports body.
In her letter posted on X (formerly Twitter), Phogat had said that their lives are not like those "fancy government advertisements" that talk about women's empowerment and upliftment.
Acting on the sports ministry directive, the IOA on Wednesday constitued a three-member ad hoc committee to run the day-to-day affairs of the WFI.

Vinesh Phogat, who was given direct entry to the Asian Games, on Tuesday announced that she won't be able to compete at the quadrennial extravaganza in Hangzhou because of a knee injury that will require a surgery.
The exemption from the Asian Games trials given to Vinesh and Bajrang Punia had created a huge controversy as the wrestling fraternity criticised the decision made by the ad-hoc panel.
However, as luck would have it, Vinesh would not be part of the sporting action in Hangzhou, starting September 23.
Vinesh revealed her injury in a statement issued on X, formerly twitter.
"I wanted to share an extremely sad piece of news. A couple of days ago on 13th August 2023, I injured my left knee in training. After doing the scans and examinations, the doctor has said that unfortunately, surgery is the only option for me to recover," she wrote.
"I will be undergoing surgery on 17th August in Mumbai. It was my dream to retain my Asian Games gold medal for India which I won in 2018 in Jakarta. But unfortunately, this injury has ruled out my participation now." She also said that she has informed all concerned authorities so that the reserve player can be sent to the Asian Games.
It clears the way for Antim Panghal's inclusion in the squad. The U-20 world champion Panghal had won the trials and was put on standby.
"I would like to request all the fans to continue supporting me so that I can make a strong comeback on the mat soon and prepare for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Your support gives me a slot of strength," Vinesh wrote.

Speaking on a facebook live, the duo said they were always ready to go through the trial process.Both wrestlers also hit out at Olympic silver medallist and BJP leader Yogeshwar Dutt, who criticised the decision of IOA&rsquo;s ad-hoc panel.
"We are not against the trials. I can't blame Antim. She is not wrong. She is fighting for her right and we are fighting for our right. She is too young, she does not understand. But we are not wrong," Vinesh said.
"We fought against the system, against the powerful. We took blows on our heads, no one came forward (then).
"She says she was cheated, but did I cheat (during CWG trials)? &nbsp;If at all it was done, it was done by Brij Bhushan, or got it done. My job was to wrestle, and I did that.
"If she felt cheated then she should have gone to court at that time. It hurts. But I am glad the kids have started speaking, they are gathering courage now. It's positive for wrestling," said Vinesh, the two-time World Championship medallist.
Bajrang said they wanted to speak on the issue only after the trials and after the decision of the Delhi High Court order on the petition.
"It was said that there are 3-4 wrestlers who can beat Vinesh but dear Antim, Vinesh has not lost (as yet), and will not lose.
"Antim, you said you became first Indian to win U-20 championship but Vinesh is also the only woman wrestler to have won two Worlds medal. You filed court case against us?," he said.
The two senior wrestlers pointed out how Dutt himself had got a similar exemption for the 2014 Asian Games.The Delhi High Court had refused to interfere and dismissed the petition filed by wrestler Antim Panghal and Sujeet Kalkal against the exemption on July 22.

Reigning Under-20 World Champion Antim Panghal on Wednesday questioned the Asian Games trials exemption given to Vinesh Phogat, asserting that not just her but many other Indian wrestlers are capable of beating the celebrated grappler in the 53kg category.
According to a report by The Bridge, Panghal will move the Delhi High Court challenging the ad-hoc committee's decision to exempt Phogat and Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia from trials. The development was confirmed by Vikash Bhardwaj, Panghal's childhood coach.&nbsp;
'We are moving to the high court and fighting this injustice. They are not giving young wrestlers even a chance at the competition,' Bhardwaj was quoted as saying by The Bridge.&nbsp;
Vinesh (53kg) and Bajrang Punia (65kg) were given direct entries for the Asian Games by the Indian Olympic Association's ad-hoc committee on Tuesday while other wrestlers will have to book their places in the Indian squad through selection trials on July 22 and 23.
Panghal, who is a silver medallist from the senior Asian Championship, asked the criteria for exemption through a video.
"Vinesh Phogat has received direct entry for the Asian Games, when she had not done any practice in the last one year. She doesn't have any achievement in the last one year," Panghal said in the video.
"Last year, in the Junior World Championships, I won a gold medal and became the first woman wrestler from India to achieve this feat. In the 2023 Asian Championships, I won a silver medal, but Vinesh has no achievement to show in the last year. She was also injured," she said.
"Sakshi Malik has also won an Olympic medal, she too is not being sent. What is so special about Vinesh that she is being sent. Just organise trials. I am not saying that I am the only one who can beat Vinesh. There are several other girls who can beat her," said Panghal.
Vinesh got a direct entry into the Asian Games by virtue of being a medal winner at the World Championships last year.

This is Vinesh's first whereabouts failure in the past 12 months. Three failures within a 12-month period would constitute a violation and could result in a two-year suspension.

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, a two-time World Championships medallist, has been served a notice by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for failing to provide information about her whereabouts.
According to the Tribune, a NADA official visited Vinesh's registered address in Partap Colony, Sonipat on June 27. However, Vinesh was not present and could not be reached via phone. Despite the Dope Control Officer's attempts to contact her for over 40 minutes, there was no response from Vinesh or her husband, Somvir Rathee.
NADA has asked Vinesh to explain her non-compliance with the whereabouts requirements outlined in the Anti-Doping Rules (ADR).
Athletes included in the Registered Testing Pool (RTP) are required to regularly update their whereabouts information on the Anti-Doping Administration Management System (ADAMS) every three months. This information includes their address, email, phone number, work schedule, and training venues. Vinesh has been part of the RTP since December 2022.
Vinesh has a 14-day period to respond to the notice. It is worth noting that this is her first whereabouts failure in the past 12 months. According to anti-doping regulations, three failures within a 12-month period would constitute a violation and could result in a two-year suspension.
Interestingly, Vinesh is not the only Indian wrestler to receive such a notice. Pooja Dhanda, a bronze medallist at the World Championships, has also had three whereabouts failures within the last 12 months. Dhanda recorded consecutive failures in July, October, and December 2022.
