As the fans are mourning the loss of Tamil actor turned politician Vijayakanth, tributes are pouring in from across the nation. The 71-year-old actor had worked in more than 150 films in his illustrious 3-decade long career, portraying dynamic characters and becoming a popular face in Tamil cinema during the 80s and 90s. Debut in 1979 Vijayakanth made his debut in the year 1979. Even though he started as a villain, soon he established himself as an &lsquo;action hero&rsquo;. He gained immense popularity in the 1980s with his revolutionary characters.
Rise to Fame Transcending from an antagonist to the Hero of the film, Vijayakanth saw huge success in the 1980s. He broke all records in 1984 with almost 18 releases in the same year. One of the most popular and well-respected Tamil actors, Vijayakanth made history by starring in the first 3D film from the Tamil industry. &lsquo;Captain&rsquo; of Tamil Cinema Vijayakanth portrayed a lot of military and police officer characters. His fans started calling him &lsquo;Captain&rsquo;. His 100th film &lsquo;Captain Prabhakaran&rsquo; released in the year 1991, where he played the lead role earned him the official title of &lsquo;Captain&rsquo;. Vijayakanth received lots of love from the audience putting him in the category of actors like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.

DMDK founder and popular yesteryear Tamil actor Vijayakanth passed away in Chennai on December 28. He was 71. The hospital where he was admitted said that Vijayakanth was on ventilator support following his admission for pneumonia.
MIOT International said in a press release, "Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff he passed away in the morning on 28th December 2023."
On Thursday, his party said that the leader had tested for Covid-19.
Hailed as 'Karuppu MGR' or black MGR by his fans for his generosity, Vijayakanth has been ill and kept a low-profile for the past four to five years.
He was earlier hospitalised from November 18 to December 11.
On December 14, his wife Premalatha was elected as the party's new general secretary. She has been the party's treasurer and her elevation came ahead of the Lok Sabha election next year and also due to 'Captain' Vijayakant's health condition.

Actor-politician Vijayakant&nbsp;who was recently admitted to a hospital in Chennai after testing Covid-19 positive, has recovered completely and is likely to get discharged soon.
Vijayakant's political outfit DMDK&nbsp;on Thursday released a statement which&nbsp;said that&nbsp;the 68-year-old actor-turned-politician's&nbsp;Covid-19&nbsp;symptoms were very mild, and he is now doing completely fine after undergoing treatment.&nbsp;
Vijayakanth was last seen playing a cameo in his son Shanmuga Pandian's film, 'Sagaptham'.
