Named after first Vice President S Radhakrishnan and strongly rooted in the RSS and the BJP, Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan brings with him a rich political and administrative experience as the 15th vice president of India, which his supporters believe will also prove handy in his role as the ex-officio chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.
Seen as a soft-spoken and non-confrontational leader, the 67-year-old Radhakrishnan took oath on Friday. He succeeds Jagdeep Dhankhar, who resigned as vice president on July 21, taking everyone by surprise. Radhakrishnan is the third leader from Tamil Nadu to occupy the coveted post.
Dhankhar was known for his frequent run-ins with the Opposition, and had even faced an impeachment notice from them.
Described as a 'Pachai Tamizhan' (true-blue Tamil) by well-wishers, Radhakrishnan was serving as the governor of Maharashtra when he was named as the vice presidential nominee of the BJP-led NDA.
On Tuesday, when he was elected as the vice president, his mother Janaki Ammal fondly recalled the story behind his name.
"When my son was born, the then President Radhakrishnan was in office. He was a teacher, and I too was a teacher. In his memory, I named my son after him. At that time, my husband looked at me and asked, 'are you giving this name because you want your son to become the President one day?' After 62 years, just as my husband had said, it has come true," she had told reporters in Tamil Nadu.
Radhakrishnan on Tuesday described his election to the second-highest Constitutional post as a victory of the nationalistic ideology and vowed to work towards making India a developed nation by 2047.
He won the vice presidential election by bagging 452 votes, while the opposition candidate, B Sudershan Reddy, polled 300 votes.
"The other side camp (opposition alliance) said that this (election) is an ideological fight, but from the voting pattern, we understand that the nationalistic ideology has emerged victorious," Radhakrishnan said in his first public remarks after the win.
"It is a victory for every Indian; we all have to work together. If we have to develop Viksit Bharat by 2047, which means we should not do politics in everything, now we will have to concentrate on development," he had said.
A two-term member of the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore during the tenure of prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Radhakrishnan came close to becoming a Union minister, but had to lose out to fellow Tamilian Pon Radhakrishnan in 1998 after some confusion over his name by the then floor managers of the BJP.
Radhakrishnan joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a teenager and rose through the ranks in the organisation and later in the BJP, gaining acceptability in the party and the state.
A member of the socially dominant and economically prosperous Kongu Vellalar Gounder community, he became the secretary of the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit in 1996 and served as the party's state unit president between 2003 and 2006.
An avid sportsperson, Radhakrishnan was a college champion in table tennis and a long-distance runner. He also enjoys cricket and volleyball.
Radhakrishnan is considered an untainted leader with rich political and administrative experience for the vice president's office and this would also prove useful as the chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
"Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji has rich experience as MP and Governor of various states. His Parliamentary interventions were always incisive. During his gubernatorial tenures, he focused on addressing challenges faced by common citizens. These experiences ensured that he has vast knowledge of legislative and Constitutional matters. I am confident he will be an inspiring vice president," Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said after the NDA chose Radhakrishnan as the vice presidential candidate.
The Tamil Nadu leader is said to be held in high esteem across party lines in his state, resulting in the BJP giving him multiple gubernatorial assignments in Jharkhand, Telangana, Maharashtra and Puducherry.
Radhakrishnan's candidature also seeks to disarm the Opposition of a key political narrative, as he is the first OBC leader from South India to be named for the vice-president's office.
An official profile circulated by the NDA projects Radhakrishnan as a leader who is eminent, knowledgeable and untainted by any legal accusations.
Radhakrishnan's political innings started with his association with organisations such as the RSS and the Jan Sangh.
He took up student politics and has since used politics as a medium to serve the people.
Radhakrishnan's track record of holding electoral, organisational and constitutional responsibilities shows that he is set to create history as the vice president of India.
He was sworn in as the governor of Maharashtra on July 31, 2024. Before this, he served as the governor of Jharkhand for nearly one-and-a-half years.
Born on October 20, 1957, at Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan has a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration.
Starting as an RSS swayamsevak at the age of 16, he became a state executive committee member of the Bharatiya Janasangh in 1974.
Between 2004 and 2007, Radhakrishnan served as the Tamil Nadu BJP president. In this role, he undertook a 19,000-km 'Rath Yatra' that lasted for 93 days.

The Congress on Wednesday extended best wishes to vice president-elect C P Radhakrishnan and recalled first vice president Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's words in the Rajya Sabha in 1952 that a democracy is likely to "degenerate into a tyranny if it does not allow the opposition groups to criticise fairly, freely, and frankly the policies of the government".
The opposition party asserted that Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan practised what he preached, both in letter and spirit.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, "While extending its best wishes to Shri C P Radhakrishnan, the newly-elected Vice President of India who will also be the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the Indian National Congress recalls the wise words of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the very first Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha." NDA candidate C P Radhakrishnan was elected the next vice president of India as he bagged 452 votes against the opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy's 300, winning the contest with a bigger than expected margin.
After the results for the vice presidential polls were declared, the Congress on Tuesday had said the BJP's "arithmetical" victory in the vice presidential election is both a "moral and political defeat" for the ruling party. It had asserted that the Opposition stood united in the election with "most respectable" performance.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had extended best wishes to Radhakrishnan on securing victory in the election, while also expressing sincere gratitude to Reddy for being the "united Opposition's joint candidate" and for his spirited and principled fight.
Ramesh had asserted that the Opposition stood united for the vice presidential election.
"Its performance has undeniably been most respectable. Its joint candidate Justice (retd) B Sudershan Reddy secured 40% of the vote. In 2022, the Opposition had received 26% of the vote in the vice presidential elections," Ramesh had said on Tuesday.
"The BJP's arithmetical victory is really both a moral and political defeat. The ideological battle continues undiminished," Ramesh had said.

Maharashtra Governor and NDA nominee C P Radhakrishnan was elected the 15th Vice President of India on Tuesday, bagging 452 votes against Opposition nominee and former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy's 300 votes, amid indications of cross-voting in his favour.
Announcing the result of the vice presidential election, Rajya Sabha Secretary General and Returning Officer P C Mody said 767 MPs out of 781 cast their votes with a total turnout of 98.2 per cent. He said 752 ballots were valid and 15 were invalid, bringing down the required majority of first preference votes to 377.
"I declare C P Radhakrishnan elected to the post of Vice President of India, and the results will be communicated to the Election Commission," Mody said.
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Radhakrishnan, saying his decades of rich experience in public life will contribute significantly to the nation's progress, strengthen constitutional values and enhance parliamentary discourse.
The victory of Radhakrishnan (67), a seasoned politician from Tamil Nadu having an RSS background and decades-long stint first in the Jana Sangh and then the BJP, was a foregone conclusion due to the ruling alliance's numerical edge.
However, the extent of his victory margin is a setback to the Opposition, which had claimed all its 315 MPs remained united in the election and voted for Reddy, their joint candidate. Radhakrishnan's margin was bigger than expected, with BJP leaders claiming that he drew support even from the rival camp.
The BJP-led NDA had on paper 427 MPs in its alliance, with the YSR Congress also extending the support of its 11 MPs to its candidate. Some MPs representing smaller parties also backed Radhakrishnan.
While Radhakrishnan received 60 per cent of the total valid votes polled, his predecessor Jagdeep Dhankhar had won by a huge margin in the 2022 election by securing 74.36 per cent of total valid votes polled. Dhankhar had bagged 528 votes out of total 710 valid votes polled.
BJP leaders were quick to claim after the results were announced that at least 15 opposition MPs voted in favour of Radhakrishnan. There were hints from the ruling alliance that some opposition MPs deliberately cast invalid votes.
BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal later claimed that "nearly 40 opposition MPs" listened to the voice of their conscience and voted in "some manner" in support of the NDA candidate, showing wider acceptance for him. His assertion of support from 40 opposition MPs appeared to include several invalid votes. Some opposition leaders had appealed to MPs' conscience in the polls to support Reddy, and the senior BJP leader's comments were seen as a retort to them.
"Congratulations to Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji on winning the 2025 Vice Presidential election. His life has always been devoted to serving society and empowering the poor and marginalised.
"I am confident that he will be an outstanding VP, who will strengthen our Constitutional values and enhance Parliamentary discourse," PM Modi said in a post on X.
The prime minister met Radhakrishnan at Union Minister Pralhad Joshi's residence soon after his victory. Several Union minister, including BJP chief J P Nadda, also felicitated him there.
Later, in another post on X, Modi said, "Met Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji and congratulated him on winning the Vice Presidential election. @CPRGuv." Radhakrishnan, who will be sworn in soon, thanked President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi for their best wishes on his election to the second-highest constitutional post of the country.
Losing candidate Sudershan Reddy said he humbly accepts the result and wished vice president-elect Radhakrishnan the very best in his new role.
The Congress also congratulated the NDA nominee on his win, and said its ideological battle against the ruling alliance will continue "undiminished".
Declaring the poll result, Rajya Sabha Secretary General Mody said one postal ballot was received but was treated as "returned and cancelled" as the elector declined to cast his vote. Three MPs - Amritpal Singh, PV Midhun Reddy and Sheikh Abdul Rashid - were eligible for the postal ballot, of which two - Reddy and Rashid - voted in person.

Members of both Houses of Parliament are eligible to cast their votes in the Parliament House between 10 am and 5 pm. Counting votes will begin at 6 pm, and the results will be announced late evening.
Union Ministers Rijiju and Ram Mohan Naidu along with Shiv Sena Lok Sabha member Shrikant Shinde have been appointed as official election agents of the ruling NDA for the election process.
"We are not just assured, but confident of victory," Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat told reporters as the polling got underway.
"I am only trying to awaken the conscience of the people. This is a fight for the Constitution, it will continue. I thank the people for the love I got and the response of the civil society," Reddy, the joint opposition candidate for the vice presidential poll, said.
Members of Parliament are not bound by party whips to vote in the vice presidential election, which takes place under a secret ballot system.
The electoral college for the vice presidential election comprises a total of 788 members - 245 from the Rajya Sabha and 543 from the Lok Sabha. The 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha are also eligible to vote in the election.

Opposition's vice-presidential candidate B Sudarshan Reddy on Thursday filed his nomination papers for the elections to the second highest office, and asserted the contest is not just about one individual, but about reaffirming the idea of India where Parliament functions with integrity, dissent is respected and institutions serve people with independence.
The former Supreme Court judge filed his nomination in the presence of top Opposition leaders, including Congress' Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, SP leader Ramgopal Yadav, DMK's Tiruchi Siva, TMC's Satabdi Roy, Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Sanjay Raut, CPI(M)'s John Brittas among others.
In a statement after filing nomination, Reddy vowed that if elected, he would discharge the role of vice president with impartiality, dignity, and a steadfast commitment to dialogue and decorum.
"Today, I had the honour of filing my nomination papers for the office of the vice president of India as a joint candidate of the Opposition parties.I did so with a deep sense of humility, responsibility, and unwavering commitment to the values enshrined in our Constitution," Reddy said in a statement.
"This election is not merely about one individual. It is about reaffirming the idea of India as envisaged by our founders -- an India where Parliament functions with integrity, where dissent is respected, and where institutions serve the people with independence and fairness," he said.
The vice president, as the chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, carries the responsibility of safeguarding the highest traditions of parliamentary democracy, he noted.
"If elected, I pledge to discharge that role with impartiality, dignity, and a steadfast commitment to dialogue and decorum," he added.
Reddy submitted four sets of nomination papers before the Rajya Sabha secretary general, who is also the returning officer for the vice-presidential election.
As many as 160 MPs have signed as proposers and seconders. These include Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Dimple Yadav, Akhilesh Yadav and other top leaders. Each set has 20 secondary proposers as well.
The returning officer scrutinised the nomination documents, and handed over an acknowledgement slip to Reddy.
A prospective vice-presidential candidate is required to get his nomination paper subscribed to by at least 20 electors as proposers and at least another 20 electors as seconders.

Modi, flanked by Radhakrishnan and senior NDA leaders, handed over four sets of nomination papers to Rajya Sabha Secretary General P C Mody, who is the returning officer for the vice presidential election.
The four sets of nomination papers have Modi, Singh, Shah and JD(U) leader Rajiv Ranjan Singh as lead proposers.
A prospective vice-presidential candidate is required to get his nomination paper subscribed to by at least 20 electors as proposers and at least another 20 electors as seconders.

Described as a "Pachai Tamizhan" (true-blue Tamil) by well wishers, Maharashtra Governor Radhakrishnan (67) is a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader who served as a two-term member of the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore during the tenure of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and later, went on to lead the party in Tamil Nadu.
The NDA is projecting Radhakrishnan as an untainted leader with rich political and administrative experience for the vice-president's office and maintaining that this would also prove useful as the chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

Former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy is the joint candidate of the Opposition parties for the Vice-Presidential polls, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced on Tuesday, as he called the upcoming election for the country's second-highest office an "ideological battle".
Reddy is a former judge of the Supreme Court and the first Lokayukta of Goa. He is also in the Board of Trustees of the International Arbitration and Mediation Centre in Hyderabad. He will file his nomination on August 21.
"All INDIA bloc parties have decided to have a common candidate; the decision has been taken unanimously. I am happy that all opposition parties have agreed on one name. It is a big achievement for democracy," Kharge said.
"Whenever democracy and the Constitution are under attack, Opposition parties unite to fight against it. So we have decided to field a good candidate in this election," he said.
Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, said Reddy is one of India's most "distinguished and progressive jurists".
"He has had a long and eminent legal career. As the judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and judge of the Supreme Court, he has been a consistent and courageous champion of social, economic and political justice.
"He is a pro-poor man, and in many of his judgments... he favoured the poor people and also protected the Constitution and fundamental rights," Kharge said.
He stressed that the vice presidential contest is "an ideological battle" and that's why all the opposition parties are contesting unitedly.
Talking about Reddy, the Congress chief said, "He reflects fully the values that saved our country's freedom movement so profoundly and the values on which our country's constitution and democracy have been anchored".
"All these values are under assault, and therefore it is our collective and determined resolve to fight this election," he said.
According to TMC leader Derek O'Brien, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had recently left the INDIA bloc, is also supporting Reddy for the Vice-Presidential polls.

Over 80 per cent of the waters was allowed to be used by Pakistan, he noted.
The Modi government has put the treaty in abeyance following the Pahalgam terror attack.
The prime minister said his government has been undoing the sins of that era, the sources added.
Nehru later told a colleague that he had believed that the agreement will help resolve other issues with Pakistan but it did not happen, he noted, Modi also spoke of the S&amp;P Global Ratings recent decision to upgrade India's long-term sovereign credit rating, saying it highlights the country's sound economy and will draw more investment.
Rijiju said Radhakrishnan (67) has led a simple life away from any controversy or taint, stressing that his election as vice president will be a matter of delight for the entire country.
With the BJP-led NDA enjoying a comfortable majority in the electoral college comprising MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Radhakrishnan's win is a certainty amid indications from the opposition INDIA bloc that it will field its own candidate and force a contest.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance on Sunday named Maharashtra Governor Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, a seasoned BJP leader belonging to a key OBC caste from Tamil Nadu with an RSS background, as its vice-presidential candidate.
BJP president J P Nadda made the announcement following a meeting of the party's parliamentary board, which included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and consultation with the party's allies.
Nadda appealed for unanimous election of Radhakrishnan (67), an OBC leader and two-time former member of Lok Sabha from Coimbatore, to the constitutional position, saying BJP leaders had spoken to the opposition parties over the last week and will reach out to them again.
Opposition leaders had told the BJP interlocutors that they can make up their mind only after being told of the ruling alliance's nominee, Nadda said, adding that his party will speak to them to reach a consensus over Radhakrishnan, whom he lauded as a "statesman".
In Radhakrishnan, the BJP has trusted a leader with a proven organsiational and ideological commitment, a far cry from its choice of his predecessor, Jagdeep Dhankhar.
In his reaction, Modi said on X, "Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji has distinguished himself with his dedication, humility and intellect. During the various positions he has held, he has always focused on community service and empowering the marginalised. He has done extensive work at the grassroots in Tamil Nadu." The prime minister expressed confidence that Radhakrishnan will be an inspiring vice-president, who is the ex officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha, and will play a crucial role in handling the government's agenda in Parliament.
Reacting to the announcement of his name as the NDA's vice-presidential nominee, Radhakrishnan thanked leaders from the BJP and its allies, including Modi.
"I am moved and touched beyond words for the confidence they have in me and giving me the opportunity to serve the Nation. I assure to work hard for the Nation until my last breath. Jai Hind," he said in a post on X.
Due to the comfortable majority of the BJP and its allies in the electoral college, comprising Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members, Radhakrishnan&rsquo;s election is all but certain, and the party hopes that his elevation will help it make fresh inroads in Tamil Nadu, where elections are due next year.
Radhakrishnan belongs to the influential Gounder caste, an OBC community, in Tamil Nadu.
The elevation of Radhakrishnan will also bolster the BJP's counter-offensive against the pitch of the Congress and its allies to woo the OBCs on issues like caste census and their political representation in the run-up to the Bihar elections slated later this years.
The BJP has cited the highest-ever number of OBC ministers in the Union government besides Modi's own background as a member of a backward caste to emphasise its pro-backward credentials, and its choice of the vice-presidential candidate will further boost its firepower.
Nadda emphasised Radhakrishnan's nearly 40 years in public life, noting that he is well regarded in different parties and commands respect among various sections of society in his home state, where the BJP remains a junior player behind the two major Dravidian regional parties &ndash; the ruling DMK and the ADIMK.
"He is considered a statesman," Nadda said of the former Coimbatore MP, who was made the Jharkhand governor in 2023 and then shifted to Maharashtra in July 2024.
Unlike his predecessor Dhankhar, who was also a governor like him before being named as the NDA's vice-presidential nominee in 2022, Radhakrishnan has largely refrained from cultivating a public profile on controversial political issues as a governor.
However, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren had alleged last year that the Raj Bhavan was instrumental in his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate as part of a "conspiracy" by the Centre.
Radhakrishnan then held a press conference on February 8, 2024, to deny the charge, insisting that his office had followed every democratic norm.
With the NDA enjoying the support of at least 422 members in the electoral college of 781 MPs, Radhakrishnan&rsquo;s victory in any contest against the Opposition is a foregone conclusion. The majority mark is 391.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, sources said, will oversee the vice-presidential election, while Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju will be the polling agent.
The last date for filing nomination is August 21.
Chief ministers and deputy chief ministers of the BJP-led alliance will to be part of Radhakrishnan's nomination-filing exercise, other than the prime minister and Union ministers.
If the Opposition also names its candidate, the election will be held on September 9.
The NDA parliamentary party is expected to meet on August 19.
Making the announcement, Nadda said even as a governor, Radhakrishnan has been actively involved in issues related to social indicators, first in Jharkhand and then in Maharashtra.
As the chairman of the Coir Board, a statutory body established by the Union government for the promotion and development of the coir industry, he did commendable work and is a widely-travelled person with visits to nearly 124 countries, Nadda said.
Modi said Radhakrishnan has rich experience as an MP and governor of various states.
"His Parliamentary interventions were always incisive. During his gubernatorial tenures, he focused on addressing challenges faced by common citizens. These experiences ensured that he has vast knowledge of legislative and Constitutional matters," Modi said.
BJP's IT department head Amit Malviya said on X that Radhakrishnan would be only the second OBC leader ever to occupy the high office of president or vice-president, and the first from South India.
He would also be the third person from Tamil Nadu to rise to the position of vice-president, Malviya said.
In the past, Radhakrishnan served as the acting governor of Telangana and the acting lieutenant governor of Puducherry.
A former president of Tamil Nadu BJP, Radhakrishnan has been associated with the party since its early years and represented it in the Lok Sabha between 1998 and 2004.
The vice-presidential election has been necessitated following Dhankhar's sudden resignation on July 21, the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament.
Though Dhankhar cited health reasons as the cause of his resignation, it is believed that his souring ties with the government played a role in his abrupt departure.

A day after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as vice president, several opposition leaders on Tuesday expressed bafflement over the sudden move with a CPI MP saying only two persons -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah -- can explain this.
Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday evening, citing medical reasons. He sent his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu and said he is stepping down with immediate effect.
CPI MP P Sandosh Kumar said there can be several other reasons for Dhankar's resignation.
"Only two persons Narendra Modi and Amit Shah can explain this... one thing is sure that he has not resigned due to health reasons," he told PTI.
"He was very enthusiastic in running the House. There can be several other reasons," the CPI Rajya Sabha MP said.
When asked about the move, Samajwadi Party leader Ramgopal Yadav said he "can't read between the lines." "What can I say, he has resigned due to some health reasons. I can't read between the lines," Yadav told PTI.
Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad said he was shocked at the vice president's resignation.
"Suddenly in the night we learnt that the vice president has resigned due to health reasons. He was in the House yesterday," he said.
"I am very shocked. I pray for his good health. Dhankhar was a brave protector of the Constitution," he said.

In a sudden move, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday evening resigned from his post citing medical reasons, triggering speculations in political circles.
In his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar said he was stepping down with immediate effect to "prioritise health care".
"To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution," he said in the letter to the President.
Dhankhar, 74, assumed office in August 2022 and his tenure was till August 2027. The resignation of Dhankhar, also the Rajya Sabha Chairman, came on the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament.
He had recently underwent angioplasty at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi and was admitted to the hospital for a few days in March this year. He appeared not so well at a few events, but has been mostly seen as lively and energetic in his most public appearances, including in Parliament.
In his eventful tenure as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar has had several run-ins with the Opposition, which had also moved a motion to impeach him. The motion to remove him, the first time ever in independent India to remove a sitting Vice President, was later rejected by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh.
He is the third Vice President of India after V V Giri and R Venkataraman to resign during tenure. Giri and Venkataraman had resigned from the post of Vice President to contest the presidential election.
As per rules, elections have to be held within the next six months to fill the post of Vice President. However, Rajya Sabha deputy chairman can take over the House proceedings till the time a new VP is elected.
Dhankhar was the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance's candidate in the election for Vice President, who is the ex-officio Chair of the Rajya Sabha, in 2022.
His resignation triggered speculation with the Congress expressing surprise, saying it is "totally unexpected" and there is "far more to it than meets the eye".
"The sudden resignation of the Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is as shocking as it is inexplicable," Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X.
Ramesh said that Dhankhar had fixed a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee on Tuesday at 1 pm. He was also to make some major announcements related to the judiciary, the Congress leader said, hoping that the prime minister would urge him to change his mind as this will be in national interest.
Dhankhar was also expected to interact with the newly-elected committee of CREDAI Rajasthan in Jaipur on July 23.
His abrupt resignation follows a day of surprising development in the Rajya Sabha for the government, as an Opposition-sponsored notice for a motion to remove Justice Yashwant Varma was submitted to him and he mentioned the same in the House and asked the secretary general to take further necessary steps.
The development came as a jolt to the ruling alliance, which had sponsored a similar notice in the Lok Sabha and taken the Opposition on board.
In his resignation letter, Dhankhar thanked President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the council of ministers and all MPs for extending support to him during his tenure.
"I extend my deepest gratitude to Your Excellency the Hon'ble President of India for her unwavering support and the soothing wonderful working relationship we maintained during my tenure.
"I express my deep gratitude to the Hon'ble Prime Minister and the esteemed Council of Ministers. Prime Minister's cooperation and support have been invaluable, and I have learned much during my time in office," he said in his letter to the President.
"The warmth, trust, and affection I have received from all the Hon'ble Members of Parliament would ever be cherished at and embedded in my memory," he said.
Dhankhar also said that he is deeply thankful for the invaluable experiences and insights he has gained as Vice President in India's democracy.
"It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India's remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development during this significant period. Serving in this transformative era of our nation's history has been a true honour.
"As I leave this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat's global rise and phenomenal achievements and hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future," he said.
Hailing Dhankhar as a patriot, former Union minister and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal said his resignation should be accepted and one should move on.
CPI MP P Sandosh Kumar said the development is something quite unexpected, and "we don't know what the reasons are".
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey said his resignation on the same day of the start of the Monsoon session raises eyebrows.
Born on May 18, 1951 in Kithana village in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, Dhankhar claimed to be the son of a farmer who rose to the second highest constitutional position in the country.
Once considered a "reluctant politician", his re-emergence in the political scene in 2019 as West Bengal governor surprised many, just as his rise to the office of the Vice President.
As the Vice President, he took on the Judiciary over the issue of separation of powers and had face-offs with the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha virtually every day.
Dhankhar had said at an event earlier this month that he would retire at the "right time", subject to "divine interventions".
"I will retire at the right time, August 2027, subject to divine intervention," he had said in a lighter vein.
Prior to his current position, he served as the governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022. He also served as a Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in the Chandra Shekhar ministry from 1990 to 1991, and as a member of Lok Sabha representing Jhunjhunu constituency in Rajasthan from 1989 to 1991.
Between 1993 and 1998, he was a member of Rajasthan's Legislative Assembly. He has been affiliated with the BJP, the Congress and the Janata Dal.&nbsp;

He emphasized that the position of Vice President, historically seen as impartial, had never been subject to such a motion since 1952, as previous officeholders had always been unbiased and adhered to the rules of the House.
Kharge accused Dhankhar of deviating from the tradition of neutrality, arguing that his actions reflected more politics than procedure. He further accused the Rajya Sabha Chairman of stifling important discussions raised by the opposition, claiming that Dhankhar regularly prevented opposition leaders from speaking and deliberately blocked debates on critical issues.
The Congress leader also alleged that Dhankhar was more loyal to the ruling BJP than to the Constitution, describing him as a spokesperson for the government instead of an impartial chair. Kharge remarked that the Vice President seemed more focused on advancing his political agenda than on upholding the dignity of the House.
Kharge clarified that the opposition&rsquo;s motion was not motivated by personal animosity but by a commitment to preserving democratic values, the Constitution, and the integrity of the Rajya Sabha. He stated that the INDIA bloc had taken this step after careful deliberation and due consideration of the prevailing situation, underscoring the importance of safeguarding the nation's democratic institutions.

&ldquo;Hon&rsquo;ble Vice President, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar &amp; Dr Sudesh Dhankhar arrived to a warm welcome in London to attend the Coronation Ceremony of H.M. King Charles III,&rdquo; the Vice President's Office tweeted.
"Hon'ble Vice President, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar interacted with King Charles III during reception hosted by him for Commonwealth leaders at Marlborough House, London," it said in another tweet.

The Congress on Thursday hit out at Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar for his criticism of Rahul Gandhi's remarks in the UK, saying that the Rajya Sabha chairman is an umpire and cannot be a cheerleader for any ruling dispensation.
The Congress' reaction came after Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar attacked Gandhi for his comments regarding microphones being turned off in Parliament, and said he would be on the "wrong side" of the Constitution if he stayed silent on the issue.
In a statement, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh noted that at an event on Thursday to mark the launch of a book, the vice president made certain remarks on Rahul Gandhi's speech delivered in the United Kingdom. &nbsp;"There are certain offices which require us to shed our prejudices, our party allegiances and compel us to rid ourselves of whatever propaganda we may have imbibed along the way.

The vice president's statement on Gandhi, therefore, was surprising to say the least, he said.
"He (Dhankhar) rushed to the defence of a government from which he is constitutionally required to be at arms-length and in a manner that was both confusing as well as disappointing," Ramesh said.
He said Rahul Gandhi has not said anything abroad that he has not said several times here. &nbsp;"And unlike certain other individuals, his stand does not vary depending on where he sits," Ramesh said.
The Congress leader argued that Gandhi's statement was factual and representative of the reality on the ground. &nbsp;
"Over the last two weeks, more than twelve Members of Parliament belonging to Opposition Parties have been served with Breach of Privilege Notices for protesting the suppression of their voices in Parliament on an issue that is inconvenient to the ruling regime," he said.
&nbsp;Over the last eight years, channels and newspapers have been blacked out, raided, and intimidated to the point that the only voice that is carried is that of the government, he alleged.
