The collapse of an illegally operated open-pit gold mine in central Venezuela killed at least 14 people and injured several more, state authorities said Wednesday, as some other officials reported an undetermined number of people could be trapped.
Bolivar state Gov. Angel Marcano told local reporters that 14 bodies had been removed so far and authorities knew of at least 11 people injured.
&ldquo;We continue to carry out rescue work,&rdquo; he said, with relatives demanding swift rescue efforts.
The accident took place in the Angostura municipality Tuesday, when a wall collapsed at a mine known as Bulla Loca, which can only be reached by an hours-long boat ride.
Angostura Mayor Yorgi Arciniega said late Tuesday that he planned to take &ldquo;some 30 caskets&rdquo; to a community near the mine, indicating that officials feared the death toll could rise into the dozens.
Relatives of the miners gathered in La Paragua, the closest community to the mine, to ask the government to send aircraft to the remote location to rescue the injured and recover bodies.
&ldquo;We are here waiting, please, for the government to support us with helicopters, planes, anything,&rdquo; said Karina R&iacute;os, whose daughter's father was trapped in the collapse. &ldquo;There are quite a few dead, there are people wounded. Why don't they give us support, where are they?&rdquo; R&iacute;os said she is worried that bodies could quickly decompose because of the area's conditions.
Venezuela's government in 2016 established a huge mining development zone stretching across the middle of the country, to add new revenues alongside its oil industry. Since then, mining operations for gold, diamonds, copper and other minerals have proliferated within and outside that zone.
Many mines operate outside or on the margins of the law. They offer lucrative jobs for ordinary Venezuelans, but conditions are brutal.
Miner Carlos Marcano, 71, survived the collapse and arrived at a triage medical tent in La Paragua Wednesday. He said the desperate situation at the mine "was terrifying.&rdquo; &ldquo;One would not want a colleague, a human being, to die like that,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Some of us made it. There are a few wounded, but there are still a number of dead who have not been rescued and are buried there.&rdquo;&nbsp;

At least 6 countries have lost their voting rights in the United Nations General Assembly. Out of the six, at least three countries defaulted on paying dues to the UN's operating budget.
These are Venezuela, Lebanon, and South Sudan. The others who lost voting rights are Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon.
UN members whose arrears equal or exceed the amount of their contributions for the preceding two full years lose their voting rights. But the UN Charter also gives the 193-member General Assembly the authority to decide "that the failure to pay is due to conditions beyond the control of the member," and in that case a country can continue to vote.
The General Assembly decided that three African countries on the list of nations in arrears - Comoros, Sao Tome and Principe, and Somalia - would be able to keep their voting rights. It granted the three countries the same exemption last year.
According to the secretary-general's letter, the minimum payments needed to restore voting rights are USD 76,244,991 for Venezuela, USD 1,835,303 for Lebanon, USD 6,19,103 for Equatorial Guinea, USD 1,96,130 for South Sudan, USD 61,686 for Gabon, and USD 20,580 for Dominica.

A landslide fuelled by flooding and days of torrential rain swept through a town in central Venezuela, leaving at least 22 people dead as it dragged mud, rocks and trees through neighbourhoods, authorities said Sunday. Dozens of people are missing.
Residents of Las Tejerías in Santos Michelena, an agro-industrial town in Aragua state 87 kilometers southwest of Caracas, had just seconds to reach safety late Saturday as debris swept down a mountainside onto them.
The official death toll rose to 22 after the recovery of 20 bodies on Sunday, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez told state-owned Venezolana de Televisión.
“There was a large landslide in the central area of Las Tejerías” where five streams overflowed, she said from the scene of the disaster. “We have already found 22 dead people; there are more than 52 missing.” “There are still people walled in," Rodríguez said. "We are trying to rescue them, to rescue them alive.” She said shelters will be set up for people who lost their homes.
Higher on the mountainside, most of the houses were swept away, including those of a group of Evangelicals who were praying when the landslide hit, said homemaker Carmen Teresa Chirinos, a resident of Las Tejerías. Families in tears hugged in front of destroyed homes and businesses.
“There are a lot of people missing," Chirinos said.
Hours earlier, Major Gen Carlos Pérez Ampueda, the vice minister for risk management and civil protection, had said via Twitter that several people were reported missing in the El Béisbol and La Agotada neighbourhoods in the north of the town. Dozens of homes were damaged by the landslide.
Rescuers were carrying out search operations with trained dogs and drones, Pérez Ampueda said. Crews of workers and heavy machinery removed debris to clear roads and restore electricity and water services.
“So many families lost their houses and I, as a businessman, lost my pizzeria," said Luis Fuentes, who opened his pizza restaurant two years ago. “Look, I have nothing.” Aragua Governor Karina Carpio said the flood waters “terribly affected” 21 sectors in Las Tejerías, capital of the Santos Michelena municipality, which has some 54,000 inhabitants.
During the past week, torrential rains have caused flooding in 11 of Venezuela's 23 states.
President Nicolás Maduro said 20.000 officials, including rescuers and members of security forces, have been deployed to affected regions.

Days after a fighter aircraft crashed in China, another jet made by Pakistan and China crashed in Venezuela.
A Venezuelan Air Force jet crashed on 18 June. The mishap occurred in Zulia provinc, and both the pilots survived. The aircraft which crashed was a K-8W Karakorum, which is used as a light trainer jet by Venezuela. Caracas has reportedly bought 36 of the Pakistan, China jets.
Unconfirmed reports said that this was Venezuela's fourth K-8W crash.

On June 9, a fighter jet had crashed in China's Xiangyang during a training mission. The aircraft was a J-7, and the pilot ejected safely. The jet had crashed into some houses killing one person, and injuring two others. The J-7 is reportedly China's most-exported jet, with Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar among the prominent buyers.
