There was no immediate reaction from New Delhi on Trump's comments. India had been a major buyer of Iranian oil until 2019, when imports were significantly reduced following the reimposition of US sanctions on Tehran.
Trump's comments come against the backdrop of US sanctions on Iran and Venezuela and its pressure on major energy-importing countries to avoid buying crude from nations under restrictions.
In recent years, India significantly increased its purchases of discounted Russian crude, making Russia one of its largest oil suppliers. The US has imposed 50 per cent tariffs on India, including 25 per cent for its purchases of Russian oil.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a telephone conversation with Venezuela&rsquo;s Acting President Delcy Rodr&iacute;guez, during which both leaders agreed to further deepen and expand bilateral ties.
The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that the two leaders agreed to further expand and deepen the India-Venezuela partnership in all areas, including trade and investment, energy, digital technology, health, agriculture and people-to-people ties.
"Both leaders exchanged views on various regional and global issues of mutual interest and underscored the importance of their close cooperation for the Global South," the MEA had said.

The Trump administration soon will allow Venezuela to sell oil now subject to US sanctions, with the revenue initially dedicated to basic government services such as policing and health care and subject to Washington's oversight, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday.
The United States will retain control in the short term to ensure the oil revenue is used to stabilise Venezuela, Rubio said at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing. &ldquo;The funds from that will be deposited into an account that we will have oversight over,&rdquo; Rubio said, adding that the US Treasury would control the process. Venezuela, he said, &ldquo;will spend that money for the benefit of the Venezuelan people.&rdquo;
Rubio offered new insight into how the US is planning to handle the sale of tens of millions of barrels of oil from Venezuela, which has the largest proven reserves of crude in the world, and oversee where the money flows. After the US raid that captured then-President Nicolas Maduro this month, the US is working to influence the next steps in the South American country through its vast oil resources.
The US will not subsidise oil industry investments in Venezuela, Rubio said, and is only overseeing the sale of sanctioned petroleum as an &ldquo;interim step.&rdquo; &ldquo;This is simply a way to divide revenue so that there isn't systemic collapse while we work through this recovery and transition,&rdquo; Rubio said.
Democrats and some Republicans on the committee pressed Rubio for more details about Trump's plans for Venezuela's oil. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., asked for assurances from Rubio that the sale of Venezuelan oil will be fair and open, not rigged to benefit oil companies allied with Trump. &ldquo;You are taking their oil at gunpoint, you are holding and selling that oil &hellip; you're deciding how and for what purposes that money is going to be used in a country of 30 million people,&rdquo; Murphy said. &ldquo;I think a lot of us believe that that is destined for failure.&rdquo;
Under Maduro, Rubio said Venezuela's oil industry benefited the country's corrupt leaders and countries such as China, which purchased Venezuelan oil at a discount. Now, Venezuela's interim leaders are assisting the US in seizing illegal oil shipments, he said.
The US will give Venezuela's current leaders instructions on how the money can and cannot be spent and conduct audits to ensure it is used as intended, Rubio said. He said Venezuela could use the money to pay for policing or to buy medicine. The fund was initially set up in Qatar to avoid having the proceeds seized by American creditors and because of other legal complications that stem from the US not considering Maduro's government legitimate, Rubio said.
Hundreds of millions of dollars have already been set aside and as much as USD 3 billion more is anticipated, he said. &ldquo;It's an account that belongs to Venezuela, but it has US sanctions as a blocking mechanism,&rdquo; Rubio said. &ldquo;We only control the dispersal of the money, we don't control the actual money.&rdquo;
Earlier this month, acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez said cash from oil sales would flow into two sovereign wealth funds: one to support crisis-stricken health services and a second to bolster public infrastructure, including the electric grid. The country's hospitals are so poorly equipped that patients are asked to provide supplies needed for their care, from syringes to surgical screws. They also must pay for lab and imaging tests at private hospitals.
On Tuesday, during a televised event to announce the revamping of various health care facilities, Rodriguez said her government and the US administration &ldquo;have established respectful and courteous channels of communication&rdquo; since Maduro was captured. Neither Rodriguez nor her government's press office immediately comment on Rubio's remarks Wednesday.
At Rodriguez's request, Venezuelan lawmakers last week began debating an overhaul of the country's energy law. The proposed changes are meant to create conditions to attract much-needed private foreign investment.

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said Thursday she "presented" her Nobel Peace Prize medal to Donald Trump, in a bid to win over the US president who had sidelined her since overthrowing Nicolas Maduro.
Her "wonderful gesture of mutual respect," as Trump called it Thursday, comes after the Republican said the award should have gone to him instead -- and after he refused to back Machado following the January 3 US military operation to capture Maduro.
"He deserves it, and it was a very emotional moment," Machado later told broadcaster Fox News in an interview.
Despite the gesture, Trump has backed Maduro's vice president Delcy Rodriguez over Machado -- so long as she toes Washington's line, particularly on access to Venezuela's vast oil reserves.
"I presented the president of the United States the medal of the Nobel Peace Prize," Machado told reporters outside the US capitol, where she met with lawmakers after having lunch with Trump at the White House.
Machado, 58, said it was "recognition for his unique commitment with our freedom."
It was not immediately clear if Trump actually kept the award following the closed-door meeting.
The Norwegian Nobel committee says its prizes cannot be transferred.
 - 'Not afraid' -
Trump had campaigned hard to win last year's Nobel Peace Prize for what he says are his efforts to stop eight wars.
Instead it went to Machado, who appeared in Oslo last month to collect her prize -- following a daring escape from Venezuela by boat -- and then dedicated it to Trump.
Venezuela's opposition has argued and presented evidence that Maduro stole the 2024 election from the candidate of Machado's party, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia -- claims supported by Washington.
But Trump has said that Machado does not have enough support among Venezuelans, and opted to stick with former Maduro loyalist Rodriguez.
Trump and Rodriguez had their first telephone call on Wednesday and the White House said Thursday he "likes what he's seeing" with Venezuela's interim leaders.
Rodriguez said however that Thursday her government was "not afraid" of a diplomatic clash with Washington.
"We know they are very powerful. We know they are a lethal nuclear power...we are not afraid to confront them diplomatically, through political dialogue," said Rodriguez.
Rodriguez was delivering Maduro's state of the nation address to parliament while the toppled Venezuelan leader is in a New York jail facing drug trafficking charges.
By contrast Machado, who campaigned for years to end leftist Maduro's rule, was greeted by jubilant supporters as she left the White House.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said as the lunch started that Machado was a "remarkable and brave voice for many of the people of Venezuela."
But while Leavitt said Trump was "committed to hopefully seeing elections in Venezuela one day," she would not give a timeline.
 - Sixth tanker seizure -
Since Maduro's capture, Trump has said the United States will "run" Venezuela -- exerting pressure through a naval blockade and threats of further attacks -- but has appeared content to let Rodriguez remain in power so long as oil keeps flowing.
US forces on Thursday seized a sixth oil tanker in its campaign to control the South American country's critical fossil fuel sector.
Separately, the first US-brokered sale of Venezuelan oil, worth around $500 million, has been finalized, a US official told AFP on Thursday without identifying the buyer.
Rodriguez in her speech also announced plans for legal reforms to Venezuela's oil sector -- which currently limit the involvement of foreign entities -- but did not give specific details.
Washington has also hailed the release of dozens of political prisoners in the past week, though hundreds remain behind bars.
Meanwhile the shockwaves from the lightning US raid that toppled Maduro continue to reverberate.
Cuba paid tribute on Thursday to 32 soldiers killed in the operation, some of whom had been assigned to Maduro's protection team, in a ceremony attended by revolutionary leader Raul Castro.

Trump's comments to The New York Times came days after he launched a lightning operation to topple Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, and threatened a host of other countries plus the autonomous territory Greenland.
"Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It's the only thing that can stop me," Trump told the newspaper when asked if there were any limits on his global powers.
"I don't need international law," he added. "I'm not looking to hurt people."
The Republican president then added that "I do" need to abide by international law, but said "it depends what your definition of international law is."
The United States is not a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which tries war criminals, and it has repeatedly rejected decisions by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the UN's top court.
Trump himself has had his own run-ins with domestic law, having been impeached twice, faced a slew of federal charges including conspiring to overturn the 2020 election -- which were eventually dropped after his re-election -- and convicted for covering up a hush money payment to a porn star.
While proclaiming himself as "peace president" and seeking the Nobel Prize, Trump has launched a series of military operations in his second presidential term.
Trump ordered attacks on Iran's nuclear program in June and in the past year has also overseen strikes on Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, Yemen -- and most recently on Venezuela.
Since Maduro's capture, an emboldened Trump has threatened a string of other countries including Colombia, as well as Greenland, which is administered by fellow NATO member Denmark.

Some members of Congress, including a handful of Republicans, are trying to check Trump's power.
On Thursday the Senate advanced a measure to rein in presidential military action in Venezuela. But even if it reaches his desk, Trump would likely veto it.
Billionaire Trump, who made his fortune as a property developer, added that US ownership of Greenland is "what I feel is psychologically needed for success."
Trump said separately that he had no problem with his family conducting foreign business deals since his return to office.

The American leader's assertion of US dominance over the oil-rich South American country comes despite its interim leader Delcy Rodriguez saying there is no foreign power governing Caracas.
"There is a stain on our relations such as had never occurred in our history," Rodriguez said about the US attack to depose her predecessor.
US special forces snatched president Maduro and his wife on Saturday in a lightning raid and whisked them to New York to face trial on drug and weapons charges, underscoring what Trump has called the "Donroe Doctine" of US dominance over its backyard.
"We obviously have maximum leverage over the interim authorities in Venezuela right now" following the capture operation, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told a briefing.
"We're continuing to be in close coordination with the interim authorities, and their decisions are going to continue to be dictated by the United States of America."
Trump has said the United States will "run" Venezuela, which has the world's largest proven oil reserves.
"They're giving us everything that we feel is necessary," Trump told the Times. "Don't forget, they took the oil from us years ago.
When asked if US control of the country would last three months, six months or a year, Trump told the paper: "I would say much longer."
But Washington has no boots on the ground, and appears to be relying on a naval blockade and the threat of further force to ensure the cooperation of the interim president.
Meanwhile Caracas announced Wednesday that at least 100 people were killed in the US attack and a similar number injured.
Among those hurt were Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said.
The couple were seen walking on their own power during a New York court arraignment earlier this week.
According to Havana, the death toll includes 32 members of the Cuban military. Maduro, like his firebrand predecessor Hugo Chavez, employed specialized Cuban soldiers as bodyguards.
 - 'Not just winging it' -
Trump's administration -- which has so far indicated it intends to stick with Rodriguez and sideline opposition figures, including Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado -- has given few details about its plans.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio insisted on Wednesday, after meeting lawmakers on Capitol Hill who have been critical about the post-Maduro planning, that the United States was "not just winging it."
But so far, the US plan relies heavily on what Trump said on Tuesday was an agreement for Venezuela to hand over between 30 million and 50 million barrels of oil to the United States for it to then sell.
Trump said Wednesday that under the deal Venezuela "is going to be purchasing ONLY American Made Products, with the money they receive" from the oil profits they receive.
That would include agricultural products, machinery, medical devices and energy equipment, he added.
Rubio said that in a second "recovery" phase, US and Western companies would have access to the Venezuelan market and "at the same time, begin to create the process of reconciliation nationally within Venezuela."
Venezuela's state oil firm said it was discussing oil sales with the United States for the "sale of volumes of oil" under existing commercial frameworks.
But Washington is looking at longer term control, according to Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
"We're going to market the crude coming out of Venezuela, first this backed-up stored oil, and then indefinitely, going forward, we will sell the production that comes out of Venezuela," Wright said Wednesday.
 - 'Immense opportunity' -
Trump will on Friday meet executives from US oil companies, whom he has said will invest in Venezuela's crumbling facilities, despite no firm having yet made such pledges amid the turmoil in the country.
"It's just a meeting to discuss, obviously, the immense opportunity that is before these oil companies right now," Leavitt told reporters.
Trump also invited leftist Colombian President Gustavo Petro to meet at the White House "in the near future," after the two leaders had their first phone call Wednesday since Trump took office last year.
Washington moved further to stamp its authority on Venezuela when it seized two oil tankers, including a Russian-linked vessel that it pursued from Venezuela to the North Atlantic.
Moscow condemned the operation but Leavitt insisted the oil tanker had been "deemed stateless after flying a false flag."

Venezuela's interim leader Delcy Rodriguez insisted Tuesday no foreign power was governing her country, even as US President Donald Trump announced Caracas will be swiftly turning over millions of barrels of oil to the United States.
Rodriguez, who was vice president under toppled leader Nicolas Maduro, has given mixed signals about how much she is prepared to cooperate with Trump, at times sounding conciliatory, at others defiant.
Speaking three days after US special forces snatched Maduro and his wife in a stunning raid in Caracas, Rodriguez said: "The government of Venezuela is in charge in our country, and no-one else."
"There is no foreign agent governing Venezuela."
Trump insists Washington is now "in charge" of the Caribbean country but has said he is prepared to work with Rodriguez -- provided she submits to his demand for access to Venezuela's vast oil reserves.
The US leader was startlingly direct about his intent regarding the South American country's reserves, announcing on his Truth Social platform late Tuesday that Rodriguez "will be turning over between 30 and 50 MILLION Barrels of High Quality, Sanctioned Oil" to the United States.
"This oil will be sold at its market price, and that money will be controlled by me" as president, Trump said, adding that he has tasked Energy Secretary Chris Wright with "immediately" executing the plan.
 - No surrender -
Rodriguez has offered an olive branch but also appeared anxious to keep on her side the hardliners who control the security forces and paramilitaries, which have patrolled the streets since Maduro's capture.
"We are a people that does not surrender, we are a people that does not give up," she declared, paying tribute to the "martyrs" of the US attacks.
She said the country is holding seven days of mourning for those killed.
In its first confirmation of losses, Venezuela's military on Tuesday published a list of 23 troops, including five generals, killed in the US strikes.
Top ally Havana separately issued a list of 32 dead Cuban military personnel, many of whom were members of Maduro's security detail.
Venezuela has not yet confirmed the number of civilian casualties in the operation in which US forces grabbed Maduro and Flores and took them to the United States to face trial.
Attorney General Tarek William Saab spoke Tuesday of "dozens" of civilian and military dead, without giving a breakdown.
 - 'Trump, murderer' -
Thousands of supporters of the presidential couple, including powerful Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, marched through Caracas demanding their release.
Fear of state repression has made it so the unpopular Maduro's many detractors loathe to celebrate his downfall.
Maduro and Flores appeared in court Monday in New York, where they pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking and other charges.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called on the United States to ensure they receive a fair trial.

Rodriguez has sought to project unity with Cabello and Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez, two hardliners seen as the main powerbrokers in the Maduro administration.
Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, sidelined by Washington in the post-Maduro transition, warned in a Fox News interview that Rodriguez was not to be trusted.
"Delcy Rodriguez as you know is one of the main architects of torture, persecution, corruption, narcotrafficking," she said.
"She's the main ally and liaison with Russia, China, Iran, certainly not an individual that could be trusted by international investors."
In a sign that a repressive security apparatus remains in place, 16 journalists and media workers were detained in Venezuela on Monday, according to a journalists' union.
All were later released.
Trump has warned that Rodriguez will pay "a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro" if she does not comply with Washington's agenda.
A retired general who held high-ranking positions in the military predicted that Rodriguez would throw open Venezuela to US oil and mining companies and perhaps resume diplomatic ties, broken off by Maduro in 2019.
He also believed she would seek to appease criticism of Venezuela's dire rights record by releasing political prisoners.
Trump told Republican lawmakers Tuesday that Maduro was a "violent guy" who "killed millions of people" and claimed that Rodriguez's administration was "closing up" a torture chamber in Caracas.
The constitution says that after Maduro is formally declared absent -- which could happen after six months -- elections must then be held within 30 days.
Machado told Fox News she was confident the opposition, widely seen as the real victors of 2024 elections, would win "over 90 percent of the votes."

But it sank as much as two percent Tuesday and around one percent Wednesday after Trump announced the latest development.
"The Interim Authorities in Venezuela will be turning over between 30 and 50 MILLION Barrels of High Quality, Sanctioned Oil, to the United States of America," he wrote on his Truth Social platform.
"This oil will be sold at its market price, and that money will be controlled by me, as President of the United States of America, to ensure it is used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States."
Analysts said the shipments lowered the risk that Caracas would have to cut output owing to its limited storage capacity, easing supply concerns, but added that the outlook for the commodity was lower prices.
That comes as the crude market remains well stocked after OPEC+ agreed to boost output.
Venezuela sits on about a fifth of the world's oil reserves, but observers pointed out that a quick ramp-up of output would be hamstrung by several issues including its creaking infrastructure, low prices and political uncertainty.
Equity markets fluctuated after a strong start to the year that has already seen Seoul following London and New York in hitting record highs thanks to the relentless rush into all things artificial intelligence.
South Korea's Kospi index continued its run-up Wednesday, while Sydney, Singapore, Shanghai, Wellington and Jakarta also rose.
However, Hong Kong dipped along with Taipei and Manila, while Tokyo slid after China imposed tougher export controls on products sent to Japan with potential military uses.
Still, despite rising geopolitical tensions, analysts remain upbeat about the outlook for equities this year.
"Participants remained squarely focused on what remains a robust bull case of resilient economic growth and robust earnings growth, largely in keeping with that which powered the market higher last year," wrote Michael Brown at Pepperstone.
He pointed to "expectations for considerably looser monetary and fiscal backdrops through the next twelve months".
"My view remains that the 'path of least resistance' continues to lead to the upside, and that any dips -- were they to occur -- continue to represent buying opportunities."

Angostura Mayor Yorgi Arciniega said late Tuesday that he planned to take &ldquo;some 30 caskets&rdquo; to a community near the mine, indicating that officials feared the death toll could rise into the dozens.
Relatives of the miners gathered in La Paragua, the closest community to the mine, to ask the government to send aircraft to the remote location to rescue the injured and recover bodies.
&ldquo;We are here waiting, please, for the government to support us with helicopters, planes, anything,&rdquo; said Karina R&iacute;os, whose daughter's father was trapped in the collapse. &ldquo;There are quite a few dead, there are people wounded. Many mines operate outside or on the margins of the law. They offer lucrative jobs for ordinary Venezuelans, but conditions are brutal.
Miner Carlos Marcano, 71, survived the collapse and arrived at a triage medical tent in La Paragua Wednesday. He said the desperate situation at the mine "was terrifying.&rdquo; &ldquo;One would not want a colleague, a human being, to die like that,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Some of us made it. There are a few wounded, but there are still a number of dead who have not been rescued and are buried there.&rdquo;&nbsp;

Residents of Las Tejerías in Santos Michelena, an agro-industrial town in Aragua state 87 kilometers southwest of Caracas, had just seconds to reach safety late Saturday as debris swept down a mountainside onto them.
The official death toll rose to 22 after the recovery of 20 bodies on Sunday, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez told state-owned Venezolana de Televisión.
“There was a large landslide in the central area of Las Tejerías” where five streams overflowed, she said from the scene of the disaster. “We have already found 22 dead people; there are more than 52 missing.” “There are still people walled in," Rodríguez said. "We are trying to rescue them, to rescue them alive.” She said shelters will be set up for people who lost their homes.
Higher on the mountainside, most of the houses were swept away, including those of a group of Evangelicals who were praying when the landslide hit, said homemaker Carmen Teresa Chirinos, a resident of Las Tejerías. Families in tears hugged in front of destroyed homes and businesses.
“There are a lot of people missing," Chirinos said.
Hours earlier, Major Gen Carlos Pérez Ampueda, the vice minister for risk management and civil protection, had said via Twitter that several people were reported missing in the El Béisbol and La Agotada neighbourhoods in the north of the town. Dozens of homes were damaged by the landslide.
Rescuers were carrying out search operations with trained dogs and drones, Pérez Ampueda said. Crews of workers and heavy machinery removed debris to clear roads and restore electricity and water services.
“So many families lost their houses and I, as a businessman, lost my pizzeria," said Luis Fuentes, who opened his pizza restaurant two years ago. “Look, I have nothing.” Aragua Governor Karina Carpio said the flood waters “terribly affected” 21 sectors in Las Tejerías, capital of the Santos Michelena municipality, which has some 54,000 inhabitants.
During the past week, torrential rains have caused flooding in 11 of Venezuela's 23 states.

A Venezuelan Air Force jet crashed on 18 June. The mishap occurred in Zulia provinc, and both the pilots survived. The aircraft which crashed was a K-8W Karakorum, which is used as a light trainer jet by Venezuela. Caracas has reportedly bought 36 of the Pakistan, China jets.
Unconfirmed reports said that this was Venezuela's fourth K-8W crash.
