Cars in Tamil Nadu are set to get expensive as the state government has announced a significant increase in tax rates for new vehicles. The hike, which includes two-wheelers and other vehicles is expected to raise overall vehicle costs in the state. Shared-autos, taxis, and trucks will also be impacted, potentially leading to higher freight and commuting expenses.
The amended TN Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1974, will now impose a 12% lifetime tax on two-wheelers priced above Rs 1 lakh, up from the previous 8%. Consequently, buyers who previously paid ₹9,600 as tax will now bear a burden of ₹14,400. Similarly, cars falling within the price range of ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh will be subject to an 18% tax, while those exceeding ₹20 lakh will face a minimum tax of ₹4 lakh, representing a 20% hike.
These tax hikes compound the existing financial strain on vehicle owners, who are already grappling with registration charges, green taxes, insurance premiums, and handling fees. Industry insiders, including S Rajvel, the state chairperson of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association, express deep concern. Rajvel points out that neighbouring states do not impose such high taxes, and the automobile industry in Tamil Nadu is likely to suffer. He further emphasizes that vehicle prices have surged by 40% in the past year alone, making any additional cost increase detrimental to sales.
Beyond new vehicle registrations, these tax changes also impact vehicles entering Tamil Nadu from other states. Commercial vehicles, in particular, face nearly double the standard tax rates. Share-auto and taxi owners are now required to pay ₹6,000 as tax for five years. However, this move has faced opposition from S Anbalagan of the TN Auto and Taxi Drivers' Association, who argues that they are already losing significant revenue to aggregators like Ola and Uber.
Truckers, represented by S Yuvraj of the TN Sand Lorry Owners' Association, voice their concerns, emphasizing that this tax hike will further increase the prices of transported commodities. Rising costs of diesel, toll prices, and maintenance expenses have already led to around 30% of registered trucks being non-operational, impacting the transportation of goods across the state.

Ahead of G20 events, Delhi Police to procure 500 vehicles, high-tech security apparatus

Over 200 meetings at 55 locations across the country will be held during this period, culminating with a summit in September in Delhi.

In view of G20 events in the national capital, Delhi Police has decided to procure 500 new vehicles equipped with high-tech security gadgets to provide foolproof protection to foreign dignitaries attending the programme, officials said on Monday.
The G20 or Group of 20 is an intergovernmental forum of the world's major developed and developing economies. The bloc comprises Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkiye, the UK, the US and the European Union (EU).
India assumed the presidency of the G20 on December 1 last year.
Over 200 meetings at 55 locations across the country will be held during this period, culminating with a summit in September in Delhi.
According to the officials, the security wing of Delhi Police will be getting 200 Mahindra Bolero -- seven-seater compact SUV -- and 200 Maruti Ertiga which is also a seven seater-vehicle. These two brands of vehicles will be inducted by March in the lead up to the G20 summit.
"We are also procuring 100 Scorpio cars. Although we have sufficient number of vehicles for our routine security arrangements, but for the G-20 summit, we are procuring additional 500 new vehicles which will be used by the security wing of our force as the security of foreign dignitaries visiting the national capital from across the world is our responsibility," a senior police officer said.
Apart from vehicles, the police department has also placed orders for various security-related equipment, including bullet resistant explosive detectors, night vision, vehicle surveillance system, baggage scanners, among other items.

Air pollution: Delhi govt imposes temporary ban on plying of BS-III petrol, BS-IV diesel vehicles

The national capital's 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) stood at 434 at 4 pm on Monday, worsening from 371 on Sunday.

The Delhi government has decided to impose a temporary ban on plying of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers in the national capital from Tuesday in view of the worsening air quality.
Delhi's air quality worsened to the severe category on Monday owning to unfavourable meteorological conditions -- clam winds and low temperatures -- prompting the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to direct all NCR states to implement anti-pollution curbs with greater vigour.
"The ban on BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles will kick in from Tuesday since the air quality has deteriorated in the severe category. We are monitoring the situation along with the Environment department. For now, the ban is likely to be in place till Friday. If the air quality improves, the ban could be lifted before Friday," said a senior Transport department official.
The national capital's 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) stood at 434 at 4 pm on Monday, worsening from 371 on Sunday.
An AQI between 201 and 300 is considered 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.

A man, whose car was damaged in the accident, said that the speeding truck first rammed into some of the vehicles on the road, which in turn hit some other vehicles.

Several vehicles were damaged after a truck lost control on the downward slope of a bridge on the Pune-Bengaluru highway late Sunday evening, in which several persons suffered injuries with eight of them being hospitalised, a police official said.
The accident occurred on Navale bridge to suspected brake failure of the truck when it was moving towards Pune, he said.
Ten to 15 people received minor injuries in the incident and they were given first aid on the spot. However, six to eight others were shifted to two hospitals for treatment, the official said.

"The truck hit some vehicles on the road due to suspected brake failure and at least 24 vehicles, including the truck, suffered damages in the incident. While 22 of these vehicles were cars, one was an autorickshaw. Fortunately, there is no loss of human life in the accident," Suhel Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone III) said.
The damaged vehicles are being removed from the road and traffic on the route will be cleared after some time.
Meanwhile, a fire department of the Pune Metropolitical Region Development Authority (PMRDA) claimed that at least 48 vehicles were damaged in the incident, including those that suffered minor damage.
A man, whose car was damaged in the accident, said that the speeding truck first rammed into some of the vehicles on the road, which in turn hit some other vehicles.
"Our car was also hit. We were four people in the vehicle and fortunately nothing happened to us as the airbags opened, but we saw that several vehicles around us on the road were badly hit," he said.&nbsp;
