The election process that follows a papal death is highly confidential. It will culminate with white smoke emerging from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signifying the selection of a new pope. Cardinals&mdash;key collaborators of the pope, managing crucial Vatican departments and dioceses globally&mdash;convene in a secret conclave to elect a new leader for the Roman Catholic Church's nearly 1.4 billion members if they are younger than 80.
This intricate voting process will indicate whether the current cardinals, many appointed by Pope Francis, favor his liberal social values and reformist agenda or if they feel the Church needs a period of consolidation.
The cardinals will set the start date for the conclave upon their arrival in Rome. Appointed exclusively by a pope, cardinals carry his legacy, as they are influential senior clerics and potential pontiff candidates. As of April 21, the Vatican reported 252 cardinals, 135 of whom are eligible electors.
Of these, 108 were appointed by Francis, 22 by Benedict, and five by John Paul II. Cardinals are formally instated in ceremonies called consistories, where they receive their ring, a red biretta, and pledge to the pope, signifying their loyalty through the color red, which represents their willingness to sacrifice for the Church.
Pope Francis convened 10 consistories, each increasing the likelihood of a non-European successor by bolstering the representation of the Church in regions where Catholicism is either a growing minority or where it is expanding more rapidly than in the largely stagnant Western world.
Historically, most cardinals were Italian, except during the 1309-1377 Avignon Papacy when many were French.
The internationalization of the College of Cardinals was initiated by Paul VI (1963-1978) and greatly expanded by John Paul II (1978-2005), the first non-Italian pope in 455 years.
While Europe still holds the largest share of cardinal electors at about 39%, this has decreased from 52% in 2013 when Francis, the first Latin American pope, was elected. The second largest bloc of electors now hails from Asia and Oceania, comprising about 20%.
A SHIFT FROM EURO-CENTRICITY &nbsp; Francis appointed more than 20 cardinals from countries that had never had representation, focusing on developing nations like Rwanda, Cape Verde, Tonga, Myanmar, Mongolia, and South Sudan, as well as places with few Catholics like Sweden.
He strategically bypassed certain European vacancies, such as in major cities, to emphasize that the Church should not be overly Euro-centric. In the United States, he overlooked dioceses like Los Angeles and San Francisco, seemingly due to their conservative leadership.
Robert McElroy, the Archbishop of Washington as of March, is known as a progressive and vocal supporter of Francis's priorities, including environmental protection and a more inclusive approach to LGBTQ Catholics.
A PAPACY'S INFLUENCE &nbsp; A pope&rsquo;s appointments can increase the chances of a successor with similar church and societal perspectives. However, the cardinals might choose someone with differing theological views if they believe that person is better suited to the Church's internal dynamics or the historical context of the election.
Pope Benedict succeeded John Paul II partly due to his long association with him and the desire for continuity. His death came just a day after he delighted the crowds of worshippers at the Vatican on Easter Sunday with an appearance on the balcony at Saint Peter's Basilica.
"Dearest brothers and sisters, it is with deep sorrow that I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis," said Cardinal Kevin Farrell in the statement published by the Vatican on its Telegram channel.
"This morning at 7:35 am (0535 GMT) the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father.
"His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His church."
His death sets in motion centuries-old traditions that will culminate in the gathering of a conclave of cardinals to choose a successor.
In the meantime, the day-to-day running of the tiny Vatican City state will be handled by the camerlengo, a senior cardinal, currently Dublin-born Kevin Farrell.
 - 'Humble pastor' -
Francis, whose real name was Jorge Bergoglio, was the first Jesuit to lead the world's almost 1.4 billion Catholics and the first from the Americas.
He took over after Benedict XVI became the first pontiff since the Middle Ages to step down -- and cut a sharply different figure from the German theologian.
A football-loving former archbishop of Buenos Aires who was often happiest among his flock, Francis sought to forge a more open and compassionate church.
He strongly defended social justice, the rights of migrants and the environment, while also pushing through governance reforms and tackling the scourge of clerical sex abuse of children.

Francis had left open the possibility of stepping down if he felt unable to do his job, following the example of Benedict, who quit citing his ailing health.
But he insisted for years that time had not yet come, and maintained a busy schedule, right up to hosting the prime minister of Slovakia shortly before his hospital admission.
Francis, who had part of his lung removed as a young man, was visibly breathless in the days before going to the Gemelli, delegating aides to read his homilies at public audiences.
Questions will now be asked whether the pontiff, known for being stubborn and refusing to take rest, should have been admitted to hospital earlier.
Even after he was released from hospital and ordered to rest for two months, Francis did not wait long before making public appearances.
He had been hospitalised with a respiratory infection in March 2023. That same year he also underwent surgery for a hernia, and in 2021 he had colon surgery.
He suffered knee pain that required him to use a wheelchair, and had fallen twice in recent months.
Yet he never took a day off and made frequent trips abroad, including a four-nation Asia-Pacific tour only last September.
Huge crowds gathered wherever he went, a testament to his popularity and human touch, which saw him finish his Sunday Angelus prayer each week urging followers to pray for him and to have a good lunch.

When Francis took over, the Catholic Church was mired in infighting and beset by a global scandal over clerical sex abuse of children and decades of cover-ups.

The cow was brought to the Vatican by a group of breeders as part of the European farmers' protest.
The cow, called 'Ercolina', which has become one of the symbols of the protest in Italy, was led along Via della Conciliazione and then arrived in the piazza to be milked, to the amazement of those waiting for the pope to appear at the window of his study.
&ldquo;I hand wrote a letter to Pope Francis asking if we could come to the Angelus to have the cow blessed," breeder Pietro Tavazzani said it would be an honour and left his telephone number.
"One evening I received a call from the Vatican, from the secretary (of the pope), asking if we farmers and breeders wanted to come 18 February with the cow in tow, that the pope would let us in the square,&rdquo; Tavazzani said.
In recent weeks, as part of the protests that have erupted in many other European countries, hundreds of farmers and their tractors have gathered on the outskirts of Rome.
They demand fair prices for their products, the continuation of the reduction of taxes on agricultural diesel, stricter controls on imports from third countries, a reduction in bureaucracy, as well as other concessions.

After pushback by some bishops in Africa, Poland and elsewhere, the Vatican on Thursday defended the recent move by Pope Francis to allow blessings for same-sex couples, insisting there is nothing &ldquo;heretical&rdquo; involved.
In a five-page statement, the Holy See's office to safeguard doctrinal orthodoxy expressed understanding that some bishops' conferences need more time for &ldquo;pastoral reflection&rdquo; on the pontiff's formal approval for such blessings.
But &ldquo;there is no room to distance ourselves doctrinally&rdquo; from the Declaration about the blessings "or to consider it heretical, contrary to the Tradition of the Church or blasphemous,'' said the statement by the office, formally called the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.
The new rule of blessings came last month in the form of a declaration, an important Catholic church document.
Some bishops immediately said they wouldn't implement the new policy.
&ldquo;Prudence and attention to the ecclesial context and to the local culture could allow for different methods of application&rdquo; of the new blessings rule, &ldquo;but not a total or definitive denial of this path that it proposed to priests,&rdquo; Thursday's statement said.
Still, the orthodoxy watchdog office on Thursday acknowledged that in situations where &ldquo;there are laws that condemn the mere act of declaring oneself as a homosexual with prison and in some cases with torture and even death, it goes without saying that a blessing would be imprudent.&rdquo;
It added: &rdquo;It is clear that the Bishops do not wish to expose homosexual persons to violence."
However, the statement called it &ldquo;vital&rdquo; that these bishops conferences &ldquo;do not support a doctrine different from that of the Declaration signed by the pope.&rdquo; Thursday's statement took pains to stress the Vatican's position that &ldquo;remains firm on the traditional doctrine of the Church about marriage, not allowing any type of liturgical rite or blessing similar to a liturgical rite that can create confusion.&rdquo;
The pontiff's approval reversed a 2021 policy by the Vatican's doctrine office which barred such blessings on the grounds that God &ldquo;does not and cannot bless sin.&rdquo; The Vatican holds that gay people must be treated with dignity and respect, but that gay sex is &ldquo;intrinsically disordered.&rdquo; Catholic teaching says that marriage is a lifelong union between a man and woman, is part of God's plan and is intended for the sake of creating new life.
Zambia's bishops conference said same-sex couple blessings were &ldquo;not for implementation in Zambia.&rdquo; The bishops conference of Malawi said &ldquo;blessings of any kind&rdquo; for &ldquo;same-sex unions of any kind&rdquo; would not be permitted.
In Zambia, gay sex is punishable by between 15 years and life in prison and the law puts it in the same section as bestiality. Malawi's laws call for up to 14 years in prison for homosexual sex, with the option of corporal punishment for those convicted.

Francis in his papacy has made a decade-long effort to make the church a more welcoming place for the LGBTQ+ community. But his approach continues to spark resistance among traditionalist and conservative Catholic leaders.
Thursday's statement stressed that the Vatican was allowing &ldquo;short and simple pastoral blessings." "This non-ritualized form of blessing, with the simplicity and brevity of its form, does not intend to justify anything that is not morally acceptable,'' the dicastery's statement said.
The statement was signed off by Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez, an Argentine prelate who is a theological adviser to Francis.
It concluded by saying that in some places, some &ldquo;catechesis will be necessary that can help everyone to understand that these types of blessings are not an endorsement of the life led by those who request them" nor an &ldquo;absolution, as these gestures are far from being a sacrament or a rite.&rdquo;

After enduring increasing hardships, he received the crown of martyrdom when he was shot on 14 January 1752", a note prepared by the Vatican said.

He said the pandemic, however, had confirmed his belief that current political and economic institutions must be reformed to address the legitimate needs of the people most harmed by the pandemic.

The title of the encyclical had sparked controversy in the English-speaking world, with critics noting that a straight translation of the word &ldquo;fratelli&rdquo; (brothers) excludes women. The Vatican has insisted that the plural form of the word &ldquo;fratelli&rdquo; is gender-inclusive and that the document by its very nature is inclusive of women.
