With nine more trains set for production in 2025, the initiative promises enhanced comfort, speed, and advanced safety features under the Make in India initiative.

Indian Railways is set to revolutionize long-distance train travel with the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set, an advanced addition to its rapidly growing fleet.&nbsp;
The first 16-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train has successfully completed rigorous trials conducted by the Research Designs &amp; Standards Organisation (RDSO) on January 15, 2025, covering a 540-kilometer distance on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route, according to an official press release.
The Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, manufactured India's first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train on December 17, 2024. Within a fortnight, the train was brought to Kota division, where it underwent short-distance trials covering 30 to 40 kilometers over three consecutive days in early January.&nbsp;
During these tests, the train comfortably reached speeds of 180 km/h, demonstrating its capability for high-speed overnight journeys, the statement read.

<h3>Scaling Up Production: The Road Ahead</h3>
Following the successful trials, Indian Railways has planned the production of nine more Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets between April and December 2025 to enhance efficiency and convenience for long-haul travelers.
To support this large-scale rollout, the railways has placed a major order for propulsion electrics for 50 rakes of 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets on December 17, 2024.
The order has been awarded to two leading Indian manufacturers, who will deliver the systems within a two-year timeframe.
The release further said that the full-scale production of the 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets is scheduled to begin in 2026-27, further boosting India's self-reliance in railway technology and setting new standards in rail travel.

These Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are designed with modern amenities to enhance passenger experience, including automatic doors, ultra-comfortable berths, onboard WiFi, and an aircraft-like design.&nbsp;
Indian passengers are already enjoying world-class travel on 136 Vande Bharat trains, which operate across the country for medium and short distances, offering reclining seats and a superior travel experience.&nbsp;
The sleeper variant will further improve long-distance travel by providing a quieter, smoother, and more luxurious journey, equipped with advanced safety features, said railways.
The train has 16 coaches, divided into AC 1st Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier, with a total capacity of 1,128 passengers. Built under the Make in India initiative, it features crash buffers, deformation tubes, a fire barrier wall, cushioned berths, and automatic doors, ensuring safety and comfort.

<h3>Final Approvals Before Operations</h3>
Before India's first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train begins operations, the Research Designs &amp; Standards Organisation (RDSO) will issue a final certificate after analyzing trial results.
The Railway Safety Commissioner will also evaluate the train at its maximum speed to ensure it meets all safety and operational standards.
As Indian Railways moves forward with this transformative project, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set stands as a testament to the nation&rsquo;s vision of modern, efficient, and passenger-friendly transportation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday flagged off nine Vande Bharat trains connecting religious and tourist destinations across 11 states.
The nine trains will provide faster connectivity across 11 states -- Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, West Bengal, Kerala, Odisha, Jharkhand and Gujarat.
In his address via video conferencing ahead of the flag off, Modi said the speed and scale of infrastructure development is matching the aspirations of 140 crore Indians.
He said the popularity of Vande Bharat trains is constantly rising and over 1,11,00,000 passengers have already travelled in them.

Two years after its launch, Indian Railways is reviewing the fares of some short-distance Vande Bharat trains in order to make them more viable for people.&nbsp;
Vande Bharat trains like the Indore-Bhopal, the Bhopal-Jabalpur and the Nagpur-Bilaspur express, along with some others are likely to fall in this category, the sources said. &nbsp;
According to end of June data sourced by PTI, the Bhopal-Indore Vande Bharat service recorded just 29 per cent occupancy whereas the return journey of Indore-Bhopal Vande Bharat Express had only 21 per cent occupancy. The journey between the two cities takes around three hours and costs Rs 950 for the AC Chair car ticket and Rs 1525 for the Executive Chair Car per passenger.
The fare of this train could be reduced significantly, the sources said.
The longest journey of the Vande Bharat Express trains is around 10 hours and the shortest is of about three hours.
"The idea is to ensure that all the Vande Bharat trains work towards ensuring &nbsp;passenger convenience. We have reviewed the situation and we believe that some of the Vande Bharat trains, specially of shorter durations between two to around five hours will do much better if their prices are decreased. We want more and more people to use these trains. &nbsp;"While most of the Vande Bharat trains are running at 100 per cent occupancy, a handful are not and we are making the changes needed to ensure they do," said a senior official. &nbsp;Another train whose fares are under review is the Nagpur-Bilaspur Vande Bharat Express which has an average occupancy of around 55 per cent. With a travel time of around 5 hour 30 minutes, the general belief is that it would do much better if the prices were brought down.
The fare for the executive class from Nagpur-Bilaspur Vande Bharat Express is Rs 2,045 while that of the Chair Car is Rs 1,075. This train was replaced by the Tejas Express in May due to low occupancy. &nbsp;The Bhopal-Jabalpur Vande Bharat Express which has clocked 32 per cent occupancy while the return journey on Jabalpur-Bhopal Vande Bharat service has shown 36 per cent occupancy is also likely to see a fare reduction, the sources said.
The 4.5 hour journey between the two cities costs Rs 1055 for AC chair from Bhopal to Jabalpur while an Executive chair car ticket will cost Rs 1880. On its return journey, the fare for an AC chair is Rs 955, while an Executive chair car ticket costs Rs 1790. &nbsp;So far, 46 Vande Bharat Express services have reached all rail-electrified states of the country. Encompassing a total of 24 states and Union territories, the Vande Bharat Express fleet has been ever-growing owing to its time-saving feature, which saves an average of an hour in comparison to other trains.
