Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that Vande Bharat Sleeper trains will be launched together once the second rake is ready, expected by October 15, 2025.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday said the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains will be launched once the second train is ready for regular service.
One train is ready for launch at Shakur Basti Coaching Depot in Delhi after undergoing necessary trials and testing, according to officials.
Briefing the media, Vaishnaw said that the second train is being manufactured and will possibly be ready by October 15, 2025.
"Both the trains will be launched together," he said.
The minister emphasised that the second train is important to maintain the continuity of regular services.
"That's why we are waiting for a second rake. Once we get it, we will decide any route and start operations," Vaishnaw added.
Speculation is rife that the trains will be launched between New Delhi and Patna as Bihar is going to polls by the end of the year.
Vaishnaw, along with Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu, briefed the media on the status of the existing and upcoming railway projects in Punjab.
They said the upcoming 18-kilometre Rajpura-Mohali line will connect the area to Chandigarh via the shortest route on the Ambala-Amritsar main line.
Besides providing direct connectivity between Rajpura and Mohali and reducing travel distance by approximately 66 kilometres, the rail link will also ease traffic on the existing Rajpura-Ambala route and shorten the Ambala-Morinda link.
Vaishnaw said the Railway Ministry has also proposed to launch a new Vande Bharat train between New Delhi and Firozpur Cantonment, which will cover the Faridkot, Bhatinda (W), Dhuri, Patiala, Ambala Cantonment, Kurukshetra and Panipat stations.
According to the Railways, the train will cover a distance of 486 kilometres between Delhi and Firozpur Cantonment in 6 hours and 40 minutes.
"I will request the Prime Minister to approve the Firozpur-Delhi Vande Bharat train," Vaishnaw said.
The ministers shared nine important railway projects that were commissioned after 2014.
These include the new Nangal Dam-Daulat Pur Chowk line (61 kilometres, Rs 672 crore), and the doubling of Chakki Bank-Bharoli line (3 kilometres, Rs 15 crore), Jakhal-Mansa line (45 kilometres, Rs 163 crore), JUC-SuchiPind line (4 kilometres, Rs 24 crore), Ambala-Chandigarh line (45 kilometres, Rs 338 crore), Mansa-Bhatinda line (49 kilometres, Rs 216 crore), Amritsar-Chheharta line (7 kilometres, Rs 31 crore), Jalandhar-Jammu Tawi line (211 kilometres, Rs 850 crore) and Rajpura-Bathinda line (173 kilometres, Rs 2,459 crore).
They also introduced seven railway projects under execution.
These include Nangal Dam-Talwara new line (123 kilometres, Rs 2,018 crore), Bhanupalli-Bilaspur-Beri new line (63 kilometres, Rs 6,753 crore), and Ferozpur-Patti new line (26 kilometres, Rs 300 crore), and the doubling of Mansa-Bhatinda line (80 kilometres, Rs 449 crore), Ludhiana-Kila Raipur line (17 kilometres, Rs 238 crore), Ludhiana-Mullanpur line (21 kilometres, Rs 295 crore) and Alal-Himmatana line (13 kilometres, Rs 174 crore).
Vaishnaw said 30 stations are being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat station redevelopment scheme.
Highlighting achievements in the trains' running schedules, Vaishnaw said that 29 rail divisions -- including Malda, Mysore, Sialdah, Nagpur and Trivandrum -- have achieved 90 per cent punctuality.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra Railway Station, establishing a direct rail connection between Jammu division and Kashmir.&nbsp;
This development marks a significant milestone in Jammu and Kashmir&rsquo;s railway infrastructure. Before flagging off the trains, Modi engaged with schoolchildren aboard the train and spoke with railway staff members present.&nbsp;
The new Vande Bharat Express will reduce travel time between Katra and Srinagar from the current 6-7 hours by road to approximately 3 hours. It aims to provide a fast, comfortable, and reliable travel option for locals, tourists, and pilgrims.
The train route passes over the Anji Khad Bridge&mdash;India&rsquo;s first cable-stayed railway bridge&mdash;and the Chenab Bridge, which holds the record as the world&rsquo;s highest railway bridge. These trains are specially designed to operate in the cold climatic conditions of the Kashmir Valley.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the world&rsquo;s highest railway arch bridge, the Chenab Railway Bridge, and India&rsquo;s first cable-stayed Anji Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir&rsquo;s Reasi district.&nbsp;
In a remarkable moment, Modi waved the Indian national flag (Tiranga) and carried it across the Chenab River on the deck of the bridge. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw were present at the event.
Before the Chenab Bridge inauguration, the Prime Minister inspected the railway arch bridge. Both bridges are part of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project in Jammu and Kashmir.&nbsp;
The iconic Chenab Railway Bridge, located on the Katra-to-Sangaldan stretch, directly connects New Delhi with Kashmir via Katra. Situated in Reasi district, the Chenab Bridge is an engineering marvel standing 359 meters above the riverbed. It will officially connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India by rail for the first time in history.

The East Coast Railway on Thursday said it has decided to add four coaches to the Vande Bharat Express between Howrah and Puri, owing to high demand for tickets by passengers.
The expansion of coaches from 16 to 20 will take effect from May 16, an official release said.
Four AC chair car coaches will be added, aimed at accommodating the growing number of passengers travelling on this semi-high-speed service, it said.
The decision was taken after a thorough review of passenger patronisation and travel demand, the release said.
The enhanced capacity is expected to improve travel convenience, reduce waitlists and further popularise the premium train service, it added.

The first 16-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train has successfully completed rigorous trials conducted by the Research Designs &amp; Standards Organisation (RDSO) on January 15, 2025, covering a 540-kilometer distance on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route, according to an official press release.
The Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, manufactured India's first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train on December 17, 2024. Within a fortnight, the train was brought to Kota division, where it underwent short-distance trials covering 30 to 40 kilometers over three consecutive days in early January.&nbsp;
During these tests, the train comfortably reached speeds of 180 km/h, demonstrating its capability for high-speed overnight journeys, the statement read.

The release further said that the full-scale production of the 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets is scheduled to begin in 2026-27, further boosting India's self-reliance in railway technology and setting new standards in rail travel.

The ministry also highlighted a recent video shared by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on X.
"The video shows a nearly full-to-brim glass of water adjacent to a mobile on a plain surface inside a Vande Bharat sleeper train. The water level remaining static can be seen in the video as the moving train achieves near constant peak speed of 180 km per hour exhibiting the element of comfort in the high-speed rail travel," the ministry said.
"The post came after 3 days of successful trials, which concluded on 2nd January, in which a Vande Bharat sleeper train in its loaded condition touched the peak speed," it added.
According to the ministry, on January 2, during a 30-km run between Kota and Laban in Bundi district of Rajasthan, the train reached a peak speed of 180 km per hour.

"A day earlier, i.e. on the first day of 2025, in a 40 km long trial run between Rohal Khurd to Kota, Vande Bharat sleeper train touched the peak of 180 km per hour, the press note said.
"On the same day, peaks of 170 km/hr &amp; 160km/hr were achieved on Kota-Nagda &amp; Rohal Khurd-Chau Mahla sections. These trials will continue for the month of January under the supervision of RDSO, Lucknow," it added.
Once these trials are over, the train will be evaluated by the Railway Safety Commissioner at the maximum speed and only after passing the final stage, it will be officially certified and handed over to Indian Railways for induction and regular services.
The ministry stated that Vande Bharat sleeper trains are designed with features like automatic doors, ultra-comfortable berths, onboard WiFi and an aircraft-like design.
"With these successful trials, rail commuters can hope for a world-class travel experience in long-distance travel like Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Delhi to Mumbai, Howrah to Chennai and many other routes also," the ministry said.

Windowpane of an executive class coach of the Rourkela-Bhubaneswar Vande Bharat Express was damaged due to stone pelting in Odisha on November 26.
The incident was reported by the on-duty RPF Escorting Staff after which local police were also been informed.
No one was hurt in the incident. In a statement, the railways said that police are trying to trace the culprits and strict action will be taken against them.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. Similar incidents have been reported in the past in which the premium train was vandalised.

The loco pilot of the Udaipur-Jaipur Vande Bharat Express prevented a possible major accident as he spotted stones and rods placed on the tracks.
The driver applied emergency brakes to stop the train just in time. The incident occurred around 9.55 a.m. near Chittorgarh district on October 2.
A video has surfaced showing railway staff removing the stones from the tracks.
The railway police force and the district police are conducting an investigation into what appears to be a 'deliberate act of sabotage'.

As per the officials, the ticketless passenger boarded the train from Tirupati and locked himself in the toilet, where he started smoking.

An unauthorised passenger's smoking activity inside a toilet on Tirupati&ndash;Secunderabad Vande Bharat Express triggered a false fire alarm, smoke-like extinguisher and halted the train for some time on Wednesday evening, a railway official said.
The incident happened in coach C &ndash; 13 on Train No. 20702 after passing Gudur, said the official.
"An unauthorised passenger boarded the train from Tirupati and locked himself in the toilet of C-13 coach... The passenger smoked inside the toilet which resulted in automatic activation of aerosol fire extinguisher present inside the toilet," an official from South Central Railway (SCR) Zone's Vijayawada Division said in a press release.
Following the false alarm, the aerosol fire extinguisher started emitting powder-like smoke to douse the flame and in that process, the passengers in that coach panicked.
Later, they relayed the information to the train's guard through an emergency phone connection inside the coach, leading to the train getting halted at Manubolu around 5 pm.
Mistaking the false alarm to be a fire accident, the Railway police rushed to the coach with a fire extinguisher and broke the toilet's window to save the passenger who was smoking inside it.
Railway police detained him at Nellore for appropriate action as per the Railway Act, the official added while the train resumed its journey later.

All passengers were safe, and the train was ready to move a few hours later.

The incident took place on a train going from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh to Delhi.

A group of people pelted stones at the Vande Bharat Express near Ayodhya on Tuesday, cracking its windowpanes as they vented their anger days after the train mowed down a herd of goats, police said. Three men have been arrested in this regard, they said.
"The windowpanes of two coaches of the Vande Bharat Express were partially damaged as it passed through Sohawal area of Raunahi police station area here around 9 am on Tuesday," Inspector of Railway Protection Force (RPF) Sonu Kumar Singh said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the train connecting Gorakhpur and Lucknow on July 7.
Singh said the information about the incident was passed to the Ayodhya Cantt RPF post. The train, however, continued its onward journey till Lucknow, he said.
Speaking about the incident, SSP (Ayodhya) R K Nayyar noted, "It was found during investigation that on Sunday, a herd of goats belonging to one Nanhu Paswan were killed after being hit by the Vande Bharat train while they were grazing on the railway track. So, Paswan and his associates targeted the train." "We have arrested Paswan and his sons Ajay and Vijay in this connection,"&nbsp;

Incidentally, Singh was formerly a close associate of the Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and had won his seat for the first time in 1998 on a ticket of Samata Party and wrested Aurangabad back in 2009 as the candidate of JD(U)

&nbsp;A BJP MP in Bihar on Tuesday ended up thanking "Prime Minister Nitish Kumar" for the Vande Bharat train between Patna and Ranchi.
Sushil Kumar Singh, who is serving his third Lok Sabha term from Aurangabad, had come to Gaya where the semi-high-speed train has a stop.
Singh, whose parliamentary constituency covers a part of Gaya district, told reporters: "I thank Prime Minister Nitish Kumar for this precious gift to people of south Bihar".
In a video clip that has now gone viral, Singh can be seen standing beside Prem Prakash Chintu, the Gaya district chief of the BJP, who embarrassedly points out the faux pas to the MP.
Singh takes a few seconds to correct himself and repeat his statement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s name.
Singh joined the BJP in 2014, ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, a year after Nitish Kumar first broke up with the saffron party.
Functions were held by the BJP at major stations falling on the route of the train, which was welcomed at Patna, the destination, by local MP and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.&nbsp;

There will be three versions of Vande Bharat trains by February-March next year, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday.

These indigenous semi-high-speed trains are being prepped to replace Shatabdis, Rajdhanis and local trains.&nbsp;

There will be three versions of Vande Bharat trains -- Vande Chair Car, Vande Metro and Vande Sleepers -- by February-March next year, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday.
These indigenous semi-high speed trains, which are being prepped to replace Shatabdis, Rajdhanis and local trains, are being made at the Integrated Coach Factory in Chennai.
In an interview with PTI, the minister said in the next three to four years, railway tracks will be upgraded to support the maximum speed of 160 kmph of Vande Bharat trains.
"There are three formats of Vande Bharat. Vande Metro for less than 100 kilometres, Vande Chair Car for 100-550 kilometres and Vande Sleepers for a journey beyond 550 kilometres. These three formats will be ready by February-March (next year)," Vaishnaw said after the launch of a Vande Bharat train from Uttarakhand's Dehradun to the Anand Vihar Terminal Railway Station in Delhi.
The Delhi-Dehradun Vande Bharat Express was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Equipped with state-of-the-art amenities for passengers, the first such train for Uttarakhand reduces the journey time between state capital Dehradun and the national capital to four and a half hours from the six hours and 10 minutes it took the Dehradun-New Delhi Railway Station Shatabdi Express.
Vaishnaw said the rail connectivity project between Rishikesh and Karnaprayag will be completed in two years and the railways is also working to connect villages located in border areas.
The minister said almost every state will get a Vande Bharat train by mid-June. The production of these trains is being expedited, he said.
"Every eighth or ninth day, a new train is coming out of the factory. Work is going to start at two more factories. We will have a new train coming out of these factories once their supply chain gets stabilised," Vaishnaw said.
Vande Bharat trains are designed with a top speed of 160 kmph but they will run at a speed of up to 130 kmph according to track capacity.
"Old tracks were designed to support speeds between 70 and 80 kmph. Around 25,000-35,000 kilometres of tracks are being upgraded to support speeds of 110 kmph, 130 kmph and 160 kmph. It will be done in the next three to four years," Vaishnaw said.
By 2027-28, 20,000-30,000 kilometres of track will be capable of running Vande Bharat trains at a speed of 160 kmph, he said and added that railway overhead power lines are also being upgraded to support high speed trains.
Vaishnaw said the railway is working on fencing along tracks to check cattle runover by trains.
"Very unique design has been developed for fencing. The height is about five feet and it has two horizontal barriers. It has been installed on a stretch of about 250 kilometres between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, and there has been zero-cattle casualty since the time it has been installed. We are working on all the factors for high-speed trains," he said.
The minister said the budget for the railways has been increased from Rs 1 lakh crore to Rs 2.4 lakh crore at present. "It is going up based on the capacity of the railways to do projects. We have to scale up the capacity of the railways to execute projects," Vaishnaw said.
The minister said the railways are expeditiously working on rail connectivity projects for border areas. Steps are also being taken to provide 4G-5G services to train passengers, Vaishnaw said.
The minister said 4G-5G towers are getting expeditiously installed by the railways. At many places, they have been installed and work is going on continuously, he said.

Stones were pelted at the train between Krishnarajapuram and Bengaluru Cantonment railway stations, South Western Railways said. The Vande Bharat Express was on its way from Mysuru in Karnataka to Chennai in Tamil Nadu.
Glass windows of the train were damaged in the attack, but no one was injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off two Vande Bharat trains from Mumbai to Shirdi and Solapur.
At an event at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in south Mumbai, Modi first flagged off the CSMT-Solapur Vande Bharat Express and later another semi-high-speed train linking the financial capital to Sainagar Shirdi temple town in Ahmednagar district.
The Mumbai-Solapur Vande Bharat Express will cover the 455 km distance between Mumbai and the textile city in 6 hours and 30 minutes, a saving of nearly one hour in current timings.
The Mumbai-Sainagar Shirdi Vande Bharat Express will take 5 hours and 25 minutes to cover the 343 km distance to the temple town.
The one-way fare without catering service on the CSMT-Solapur Vande Bharat train will be Rs 1,000 for chair car and Rs 2,015 for executive chair car, while the fares for the two classes with catering will be Rs 1,300 and Rs 2,365 respectively, a CR official said.
The one-way journey ticket without catering service for CSMT to Sainagar Shirdi will be Rs 840 and Rs 1670 for chair car and executive chair car respectively, while the ticket prices with catering service will be Rs 975 and Rs 1840 respectively.
This is Modi's second visit to the city in less than a month. On January 19, the PM inaugurated and laid foundation stones for infrastructure and healthcare projects worth more than Rs 38,000 crore in Mumbai.
His visit assumes significance in view of the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation polls.&nbsp;

It's not the first time that a dirty coach was spotted in a train. Earlier this month, Railways had requested passengers to keep train premises clean after garbage was found inside the Secunderabad-Visakhapatnam Vande Bharat express.
