The death toll in the Vaishno Devi landslide has gone up to 32 with rescuers pulling out more bodies from under the debris, officials said on Wednesday, a day after disaster struck the route to the hilltop shrine in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district.
At least 20 people were injured in the landslide triggered by heavy, relentless rain and are undergoing treatment in different hospitals, officials said.
With fears that more people could be trapped, rescue teams are continuing to dig through the mounds of rubble to look for survivors. While 30 bodies were recovered from the debris, two of those injured died in hospital.
The pilgrimage to the shrine was suspended when the mountainside literally gave way and stones, boulders and rocks came hurtling down around 3 pm on Tuesday, catching people unawares.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his prayers are for everyone's safety and well-being.
"The loss of lives due to a landslide on the route to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple is saddening. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest. The administration is assisting all those affected," he said in a post on X.
The landslide struck near the Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkwari, about halfway along the winding 12-km trek from Katra to the shrine.
There are two routes up to the shrine -- while the yatra had been suspended on the Himkoti trek route since morning on Tuesday, it was going on on the old route till afternoon when authorities decided to suspend it as a precautionary measure.
Unrelenting, torrential rain for days together has created havoc in Jammu region.
On August 14, a cloudburst triggered flashfloods in Chisoti, the last motorable village en route to the Machail Mata shrine, in Kishtwar district leaving behind a trail of death and destruction. At least 65 people, mostly pilgrims, were killed, more than 100 injured and 32 are still missing.

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) said that &ldquo;a landslide incident has occurred near Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkwari, some injuries are feared. Rescue operations are underway along with required manpower and machinery. Jai Mata Di.&rdquo;
Confirming the casualties, Senior Superintendent of Police (Reasi) Paramvir Singh said 30 people had lost their lives. Rescue efforts involving local authorities and disaster response teams were quickly mobilised to assist the injured and clear debris.
Calling the incident &ldquo;extremely tragic,&rdquo; Union Home Minister Amit Shah said he had spoken with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. Shah noted that the local administration was engaged in relief and rescue work and that NDRF teams had been rushed to the site.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed deep sorrow, saying he was &ldquo;deeply distressed to know that an unfortunate landslide triggered by incessant rain claimed the lives of devotees at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine.&rdquo; He offered condolences to the bereaved families, prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured, and directed officials to provide immediate assistance. Sinha also said the situation across the Jammu division was being closely monitored amid heavy rainfall and urged residents to follow official advisories.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also spoke with Shah, said that heavy and continuous rains had caused widespread damage and disruption to normal life in Jammu province. He added that efforts were underway to restore phone and data connectivity at the earliest.
Meanwhile, the heavy rains and landslide disrupted rail services in the region. Officials said 18 trains were cancelled after traffic was suspended on the down line between Pathankot Cantt and Kandrori due to soil erosion and flash floods in the Chakki river.

Officials said a booking office and an overhead iron structure caved in under the weight of the landslide, triggered by heavy rains which lashed Katra town, the base camp for the pilgrims visiting the shrine atop Trikuta hills, they said.
The yatra to the shrine has been suspended till 1 pm as a precautionary measure.
The incident occurred around 8.30 am at Gulshan Ka Langar near Banganga, the starting point for the yatra where mostly pony riders gather along the old track and register before taking the pilgrims to the cave shrine, 12 km from the town.
&ldquo;The landslide resulted in critical injuries to three persons and minor injuries to seven others. All the injured were rescued and taken to hospital,&rdquo; officiating Chief Executive Officer of Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Sachin Kumar Vaishya told reporters.
Vaishya, who is also the district magistrate Jammu, rushed to the scene and said a full fledged rescue and debris clearance operation is underway.
The officials said a rescue operation was launched immediately by local volunteers, shrine board staff, SDRF, police and CRPF personnel.
An earth-mover was also rushed to speed up the rescue efforts, they said.
The critically injured -- Uppan (70) of Chennai, his wife K Radha (66), and Rajinder Bhalla (70) of Haryana -- were admitted in Narayan hospital, while Leela Raikwar (56) of Uttar Pradesh was undergoing treatment at community health centre Katra, the officials said.
They said Suresh kumar (66) of Maharashtra and two locals Nikhil Thakur (26) and Vicky Sharma were discharged after first aid.
&ldquo;I was inside the booking office when stones started hitting the overhead iron structure and we alerted others and rushed out fearing a landslide,&rdquo; Thakur told PTI over phone after receiving treatment for his foot injury at the community health centre.
He said there was a small group of devotees and pony riders at the scene in view of heavy rains.
According to the meteorological department, Katra town recorded 184.2 mm of rainfall over the past 24 hours ending 8.30 am Monday.

A landslide also hit the track leading to Bhairav temple, disrupting the movement of pilgrims, the officials said.
They said the agencies concerned have deployed their men and machines to clear the debris on both the tracks.
On June 24, Lt Governor Manoj Sinha directed identifying of vulnerable spots along the pilgrimage route and implementing necessary measures to address and mitigate potential risks of landslides and shooting stones, ensuring a safer environment for devotees.&nbsp;

In light of the town's proximity to the temple, the Union Territory administration maintains a strict prohibition on the consumption and sale of alcohol and non-vegetarian products in the area.
According to the police, the accused allegedly indulged in liquor consumption on a hotel premises despite explicit instructions prohibiting such activities. Reasi SSP Paramvir Singh has reinforced a zero-tolerance stance on drug and alcohol use in religious locales and has mandated the apprehension of those involved to set a deterrent precedent.
The incident gained attention after photos circulated on social media, stirring discontent among local residents. However, by the time authorities moved to act, the accused had reportedly vacated the hotel and departed from Katra, sources indicate.
Alongside Awatramani, those named in the FIR include Darshan Singh, Parth Raina, Ritick Singh, Rashi Dutta, Rakshita Bhogal, Shagun Kohli, and Anastasia Arzamaskina. A special team has been formed to locate and bring the individuals to account, police officials stated.

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti called for a 72-hour shutdown, which began on Wednesday. It announced that all activities in Jammu and Kashmir's Katra would remain suspended during the bandh.
Women and children have now joined the six protesters who began a hunger strike on Wednesday night, demanding the release of 18 Samiti members detained during a protest march against the project earlier that day.
Last month, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board decided to move forward with a Rs 250-crore passenger ropeway project between Tarakote Marg to Sanji Chhat along the 12-kilometre track to the shrine after shelving the project in the past due to similar protests.
The project will facilitate access to the temple for senior citizens, children and others who find it difficult to climb the track to the cave shrine, it had said.
The Samiti, which represents shopkeepers, pony operators and palanquin owners, argues that the ropeway would destroy the livelihoods of local business owners and has demanded that the project be scrapped.
With black flags displayed across the town, shops, restaurants, and other business establishments remained closed for the third day, and vehicular movement was at a standstill, following the Samiti's call for protest.
The bandh has disrupted normal life in one of India&rsquo;s busiest pilgrimage hubs, which is visited daily by thousands of devotees seeking blessings at the cave shrine.
"The bandh is part of our 72-hour-long shutdown against the ropeway project. It is going on peacefully. The committee will decide on the next course of action soon," said a spokesperson for the Samiti.
Criticising the administration for its lack of engagement, the spokesperson said, "The administration is indifferent to the plight of people, including women and children, holding peaceful protests. Our simple demand is to shelve the project, as it threatens the livelihood of Katra residents, most of whom rely on the pilgrimage economy."
He further claimed that instead of initiating dialogue, the administration resorted to force, including the detention of Samiti leaders during a peaceful protest. "They are creating an unnecessary crisis with their approach," he stated.
Shiva, a participant in the hunger strike, had to be hospitalised after his condition deteriorated.
"Our hunger strike will continue until the detained individuals are released. If someone falls ill, another person will replace them," said another participant in the hunger strike.
Eighteen protesters, including Samiti leaders Bhupinder Singh and Sohan Chand, were detained by police during Wednesday's march and taken away from the protest site.
The proposed Rs 250-crore ropeway project will connect Tarakote Marg to Sanji Chhat, leading to the cave shrine in Reasi district.
In Jammu, the Shiv Sena Dogra Front (DFSS) extended its support to the pilgrims, who are facing hardships due to the bandh, and urged that the issue be resolved amicably.
"We stand with the pilgrims and support better facilities. If needed, create two ropeways instead of one. Provide more amenities for accommodating pilgrims during the yatra," said DFSS President Ashok Gupta.
Gupta added that the pilgrimage had significantly boosted Katra's economy, and the bandh was causing inconvenience to devotees. "Yatra, business, ponywalas are all dependent on pilgrims. They should not be put to inconvenience," he said.
"For the past three days, pilgrims have faced immense difficulties. If the authorities fail to address this, we will use our vehicles to ferry pilgrims to the temple and provide them with food," he said.
However, many pilgrims expressed dissatisfaction over the closure of eateries and the unavailability of local transport, which caused significant inconvenience during their journey to the cave shrine.
To lessen the impact of the bandh, the Shrine Board has arranged boarding and lodging for pilgrims arriving in the town.
Special langars at the Katra railway station, Banganga and Tarakote are providing tea and milk to ensure the yatra continues smoothly on both tracks.

Additionally, operators of ponies and palkis (palanquins) have voiced objections to the project, prompting plans for a protest.
This isn&rsquo;t the first demonstration by the local community. In November, shopkeepers protested for four days against the project, during which tensions flared and stones were thrown at police. The then-District Magistrate, Vishesh Pal Mahajan, visited the area and assured the protesters that their concerns would be addressed by December 15. However, Mahajan's transfer soon followed, and shopkeepers suspect that his decision to delay the ropeway project was a factor in his reassignment.
In response to the ongoing controversy, shops in Katra will remain closed on Wednesday as part of the protest, with local residents backing the strike. Additionally, all political parties in the region, except the BJP, have come together to support the action.

Many eyewitnesses said that there was overcrowding as people were staying back on the shrine premises after darshan instead of returning to the base camp at Katra.

The three-member panel set up to probe the stampede at the famous Vaishno Devi shrine has been asked to submit its report to the Jammu and Kashmir government within a week, according to an official order issued on Saturday.
The committee headed by the principal secretary (home) was constituted by the Lt Governor Manoj Sinha following the stampede at the shrine atop Trikuta hills in Reasi district in the early hours of Saturday that left 12 pilgrims dead and over a dozen others injured.

Devotees of the&nbsp;Vaishno Devi Shrine in&nbsp;Jammu and Kashmir will soon be able to attend the Darshan&nbsp;live, from the comfort of their home.
A new mobile app is set to be launched on October 17, the first day of Navratri&nbsp;and&nbsp;will also have a feature for people to conduct a live hawan.
These new measures are for devotees, who are unable to undertake the 12-km trek to the hilltop shrine. The app will also facilitate home delivery of the pooja prasad.
The aarti&nbsp;at Vaishno&nbsp;Devi is currently live-streamed on a religious TV channel, as per the CEO of the Board, but he says the app will offer greater flexibility.
