Cricket's latest wunderkind Vaibhav Sooryavanshi played arguably the most breathtaking knock in the history of U-19 World Cup to fire India to a record-extending sixth title with a 100-run drubbing of England in the summit clash in Harare on Friday.
Sooryavanshi's 80-ball 175, which comprised a record 15 sixes and as many fours, propelled India to an imposing 411 for 9 after England opted to bowl first. Bruised and battered following Sooryavanshi's brutal onslaught, England's innings ended at 311 in 40.2 overs after being set an improbable target of 412 against a well-rounded bowling attack.
Caleb Falconer top-scored for England with a scintillating 67-ball 115, leaving a lasting impression on the biggest stage while helping his side reduce the margin of defeat.
This was after the 14-year-old Sooryavanshi produced a knock for the ages and raced to the three-figure mark in a mere 55 balls to become the second fastest centurion in this competition.
The triumph, which ensured India's continued dominance in the age-group showpiece, could be attributed to a robust domestic structure, vast talent pool, exposure to advanced coaching, high-quality preparation, and passion for the game among the country's youth. India last won the tournament in 2022.
Once India crossed 400 in the final, they were the overwhelming favourites to emerge victorious, and that is exactly how the script panned out, with the bowlers performing as a collective outfit.
To some extent, the achievement bore resemblance to the exploits of world-class Indian U-19 teams of the past that featured the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, but this side led by Ayush Mhatre has carved a niche of its own, especially in terms of sheer ruthlessness, and no one exemplifies that better than that raging force called Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
Sooryvanshi's knock is the record for the best individual score in a U-19 World Cup final and is also the highest team total in the summit showdown of the tournament.
The opener exploded when it mattered the most, reaching his fifty in just 32 balls and continued in the same vein to torment the English bowlers with his wide range of strokes. His second fifty came off just 23 balls.
As many as 150 off his 175 runs came off boundaries thanks to his 15 sixes and as many fours during a knock in which he literally toyed with the opposition attack and turned the Harare Sports Club into his playground.
He now holds the record for most sixes in a Youth ODI innings, surpassing his own 14 maximums against UAE at ICCA Dubai in December. Sooryavanshi now also has the fastest 150 (off 71 balls) in U-19 cricket, bettering the 98 balls taken by England's Ben Mayes against Scotland at the same venue earlier in the competition.
To put things into perspective, Vedant Trivedi saw Sooryavanshi celebrate both his 100 and 150 while facing only four balls between the two landmarks. Such was Sooryavanshi's onslaught that India's run rate was around 10 at the halfway mark and the projected total was 500 at that stage of the game.
However, the boy from Bihar's Samastipur, after leaving the cricket world awestruck in little less than two hours, got out in the 26th over while trying to scoop Manny Lumsden, only to get his glove for wicketkeeper Thomas Rew to complete a catch down the leg side off a short of a length ball from around the wicket.
Relieved, the England players ran towards Sooryvanshi to congratulate him for playing an innings that one doesn't get to see often in a World Cup final.
Sooryvanshi put on 142 runs in just 19 overs with his skipper Ayush Mhatre, who departed following a 51-ball 53 immediately after bringing up his half-century.
By clearing the ropes repeatedly, Sooryvanshi aggregated a staggering 22 sixes in this edition alone, leapfrogging South Africa's Dewald Brevis, whose record of 18 sixes had stood since 2022. Sooryvanshi has also become the youngest centurion in the history of the tournament.
He was severe on all the English bowlers, and among the worst sufferers were left-arm spinner Ralphie Albert and off-spinner Farhad Ahmed, who were clobbered for 27 and 22 runs respectively. Manny Lumsden leaked 81 runs in eight overs, while Sebastian Morgan gave away 74 in his nine overs.
After Sooryvanshi's dismissal, Abhigyan Kundu (40 off 31 balls), Vedant Trivendi (32 off 36), Vihaan Malhotra (30 off 36) and Kanishk Chouhan (37 off 20) chipped in with useful contributions, and even though England did manage to pull things back a bit, they were not allowed to dictate.

Rising Indian cricket talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi was awarded the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar by President Droupadi Murmu on Friday in recognition of his outstanding performances for Team India in age-group cricket and for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The 14-year-old left-handed batter has gained nationwide attention, with many drawing comparisons to Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who also began his career as a teenage prodigy.
Suryavanshi made history last year by becoming the youngest player to secure an IPL contract, purchased by Rajasthan Royals for ₹1.1 crore.
Before his IPL debut, he had scored a 58-ball century for India in a four-day match against Australia U19 and participated in the ACC Under-19 Asia Cup 2024, scoring 176 runs at an average of 44, including two half-centuries.
In his IPL debut against the Lucknow Super Giants, in the absence of injured skipper Sanju Samson, Suryavanshi hit the first ball faced from Shardul Thakur for a six and ended with 34 runs off 20 balls.
Across seven innings in his debut IPL season, he scored 252 runs at an average of 36.00 and a strike rate exceeding 206, registering a century and a fifty. His century against Gujarat Titans made him the youngest centurion in T20 cricket and broke the record for the fastest IPL century by an Indian, reaching 100 in 35 balls with seven fours and 11 sixes.
During India U19&rsquo;s tour of England, he recorded the fastest century in U19 ODI cricket, scoring 143 off 78 balls, including 13 fours and 10 sixes at a strike rate of 183.33. His ton came off 52 balls, surpassing Pakistan&rsquo;s Kamran Ghulam&rsquo;s 53-ball record in 2013. He was the top scorer in the ODI leg of the series with 355 runs in five innings at an average of 71.00 and a strike rate of 174.01, including one century and one fifty.
In the Rising Stars Asia Cup, representing India A against UAE A, Suryavanshi hit 144 runs in 42 balls, achieving a 32-ball century&mdash;his fastest to date&mdash;and marking the joint-third-fastest T20 century by an Indian. He topped India&rsquo;s semi-final run with 239 runs in four innings at an average of 59.75 and a strike rate of 243.87.
In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy clash against Maharashtra last month, he became the youngest century-scorer in the tournament&rsquo;s history with 108 off 61 balls, hitting seven fours and seven sixes at a strike rate above 177.
Most recently, during the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 Plate League fixture against Arunachal Pradesh, the 14-year-old scored 190 off 84 balls, reaching 150 runs in 59 deliveries and surpassing AB de Villiers&rsquo; record of 64 balls for the fastest List A 150. This marked his first non-T20I century in senior cricket.
Earlier this month, he also scored 171 off 95 balls in the U19 Asia Cup in the UAE.

The list of the quickest hundred in this form of the game is topped by Jake Fraser-McGurk (29 balls) for South Australia against Tasmania in the 2023-24 season and the great AB de Villiers (31 balls) for South Africa against West Indies in Johannesburg.&nbsp;

The 14-year-old Suryavanshi, who had come close to striking half-centuries in the previous two games before getting dismissed in his 40s, finally made his innings count as he clobbered the home team bowling on way to 86 off just 31 deliveries as India chased England's 268/6 in 34.3 overs on Wednesday.
Suryavanshi's knock was studded with six boundaries and nine maximums.
In fact, nine sixes by Suryavanshi is the highest number of maximums hit by an Indian batter in an U-19 ODI eclipsing the previous record of eight sixes by Mandeep Singh.
India suffered a slump in the middle overs with the team reduced to 199 for 6 in the 24th over.
But bowling all-rounder Kanishk Chouhan (3/30), who had taken three England wickets earlier, hit an unbeaten 43 (42 balls) and shared an unbroken 75-run stand with RS Ambrish (31 not out) to guide the team to victory.
Suryavanshi ravaged every single bowler that bowled to him and made his intentions clear when he smacked right-arm pacer Sebastian Morgan for two consecutive sixes in the third over.
Morgan came in for some harsh punishment again in his subsequent over when he was hit for two more sixes and a boundary by the 14-year-old batting sensation, who has been on a roll since showing his precocious talent in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals.
England left-arm pacer James Minto bore the brunt of Suryavanshi's fury in the sixth over, going for 23 runs, which included three sixes and a boundary.
When Suryavanshi was finally dismissed, caught by Joseph Moores off right-arm pacer Alexander Wade, India had wiped off 111 runs from the target in only the eighth over.
Suryavanshi's departure saw India struggle a bit in the middle overs before Kanishk and Ambrish played with caution to guide the team home with 33 balls to spare.
Earlier, England skipper Thomas Rew smashed an unbeaten 76 (44 balls) while opener Ben Dawkins struck form with a fine 62 as the hosts scored a competitive 268 for 6 after the match was delayed due to a wet outfield.
Dawkins, a right-handed batter, following two successive below-par scores, gave England the start they needed after they were put in to bat by the visitors on an overcast day.
Dawkins and his left-handed opening partner Isaac Mohammed (41 off 43 balls) displayed immense calm playing the moving ball as they stitched together a 78-run partnership at the top to give the hosts the start they needed.
Isaac's dismissal did not slow the flow of runs as the next batter in Ben Mayes played an almost run-a-ball innings scoring 31 (32) to guide England to 133/2 by the 22nd over.
The 55-run partnership for the second wicket between Dawkins and Mayes really gave the home team the momentum, which was later capitalised by skipper Rew as he launched into the Indian bowling attack by playing some cracking shots that left the visitors searching for ideas.

"I've never seen a kid like this. When I was captain of the Delhi team, Sachin (Tendulkar) played against us at a very young age and scored around 80 runs in the Ranji Trophy semifinal.
"Then came Virat Kohli, who is still playing. And now, everyone is talking about Suryavanshi. He has all the makings of a superstar," he said.
Lal described Suryavanshi's hitting abilities as a "God-given talent." "...but it's up to you how you work on it. Your sincerity, discipline, upbringing &mdash; these matter a lot. Family support is important too. When your parents are disciplined and supportive, that gives you added motivation," he explained.
Lal felt Suryavanshi should play as much domestic cricket as possible going forward.
"Playing in different conditions against various opponents helps you grow," he reasoned.

A Small-Town Boy with Big Dreams
Hailing from the small village of Tajpur in Bihar, Vaibhav Suryavanshi is fast emerging as one of India&rsquo;s most promising cricketing talents.
Born on March 27, 2011, his journey from playing in his backyard to donning the Rajasthan Royals jersey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) is nothing short of a dream come true.
His father, Sanjeev, a farmer by profession, noticed his son&rsquo;s passion for cricket early on.
To support his child&rsquo;s dream, Sanjeev sold his farmland in Motipur to fund his cricket training. At the age of 9, Vaibhav was enrolled in a cricket academy in Samastipur, setting the foundation for his future.
<h3>Making History in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction</h3>
The world took notice of Vaibhav when he became the youngest cricketer ever shortlisted for an IPL auction in 2025. His raw talent and power-hitting ability caught the eye of the Rajasthan Royals, who called him for trials in Nagpur ahead of the auction.
Vaibhav didn&rsquo;t disappoint&mdash;during his practice match, he smashed eight sixes and four boundaries, impressing all.&nbsp;
This set the stage for a bidding war between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals, with the Royals eventually securing the young left-hander for a staggering INR 1.1 crore (Rs 11 million).

Ahead of IPL 2025, Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson heaped praises on the young batter.
"Vaibhav looks very confident; he was hitting sixes out of the ground at the academy. People were already talking about his power-hitting. What else can you ask for? It is all about understanding his strengths, backing him, and being there for him like an elder brother," Samson said when asked about Vaibhav&rsquo;s training session ahead of the IPL 2025 season.&nbsp;
He further added, "The key is to keep him in the best shape and provide a relaxed environment. Rajasthan Royals ensures a positive atmosphere in the dressing room and backs its players. You never know&mdash;he might end up playing for India in a couple of years."

<h3>A Rapid Rise Through the Ranks</h3>
Vaibhav&rsquo;s rise in the short period has been extraordinary. At just 12 years old, he played in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, where he scored around 400 runs in five matches.
His performances earned him a spot in the India B U-19 squad for the Under-19 quadrangular series in November 2023, which featured India A, Bangladesh, and England.
While he didn&rsquo;t make the final squad for the ICC U-19 World Cup 2024, he bounced back by impressing Bihar selectors at a U-23 selection camp.
His performances led to a historic Ranji Trophy debut for Bihar against Mumbai in January 2024, making him the youngest Indian first-class debutant since 1986 at just 12 years and 284 days.
<h3>Raising the Bar at the International Stage</h3>
Vaibhav&rsquo;s potential further strengthened when he made his India U-19 debut in a youth Test against Australia in Chennai in September 2024. He smashed a 62-ball 104 in the match.
His ton was the fastest by an Indian in youth Tests and the second-fastest globally. He took only 58 balls to smash the hundred.
Later that year, Vaibhav played a crucial role in India's run to the final at the U-19 Asia Cup 2024 in the UAE.
He finished as the team&rsquo;s second-highest scorer, with two crucial half-centuries: one came in a must-win group stage match against the hosts and another was a match-winning knock in the semi-finals against Sri Lanka.
<h3>The Youngest to Play List A Cricket</h3>
Vaibhav&rsquo;s did not stop there and kept upping the ante at the crucial stages of the various tournaments.
He created another record when he became the youngest Indian to play List A cricket, making his debut for Bihar in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 against Madhya Pradesh at 13 years and 269 days old.
A fortnight later, he became the youngest Indian to score a fifty in List A cricket, smashing 71 off 42 balls against Baroda.
As IPL 2025 knocks at the door, all eyes will be on Vaibhav Suryavanshi as he prepares to shine on one of cricket's biggest stages.
