The manufacturing licence of Noida-based pharmaceutical firm Marion Biotech was cancelled on Wednesday by Uttar Pradesh authorities, according to officials.
Marion Biotech's cough syrup Dok-1 was linked with the death of 18 children in Uzbekistan. The incident which happened last December had prompted central and state drug authorities in India to launch a probe into the matter.
"The firm's licence was under suspension since January after which a detailed inquiry was initiated. Now the licence of the firm has been cancelled by the Uttar Pradesh Drugs Controlling and Licensing Authority. The firm can no longer manufacture the syrup," a government official said.
On March 3, the Noida Police had arrested three employees of Marion Biotech from its office in Sector 67 while a lookout notice was issued for two of its directors after an FIR was lodged against all of them, the official said.
The FIR had come in the wake of investigation's finding that samples of Marion Biotech's drugs were "adulterated" and "not of standard quality." The samples were sent to the government's regional drug testing laboratory in Chandigarh and 22 of them were found to be 'not of standard quality' (adulterated and spurious), according to the FIR.
The FIR has been lodged under Indian Penal Code sections 274 (adulteration of drugs), 275 (sale of adulterated drugs), 276 (sale of drug as a different drug or medical preparation) as well as under Section 17 (misbranded drugs) and related violations of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
Marion Biotech had come under the scanner in December last year for its cough syrup Dok-1 that is suspected to have led to the death of 18 children who consumed it in Uzbekistan after which the CDSCO launched a probe into the matter.
The production licence of the firm was suspended in January after inspections at its site by the central and the state drug authorities in the wake of the controversy.
On January 12, the World Health Organization (WHO) had also issued a 'medical product alert', referring to two substandard (contaminated) products, identified in Uzbekistan and reported to it on December 22, 2022.

The process has been initiated for cancellation of the drug license of pharmaceutical firm Marion Biotech, which is allegedly linked with the death of 18 children in Uzbekistan who consumed their cough syrup in December 2022, officials&nbsp; said on Sunday.
All production of drugs and other activities at the firm's campus in Sector 67 of Noida have also been stopped completely, Gautam Buddh Nagar drug inspector Vaibhav Babbar said.
On Friday, the local police arrested three senior employees of the firm after an FIR was lodged against them on charges of manufacturing and sale of adulterated drugs.
The two directors of the company named in the FIR, however, still remain at large.
&ldquo;The process has been initiated for cancellation of the drug license of pharmaceutical firm Marion Biotech. Paperwork for it is in progress and a report has been sent to the Uttar Pradesh government," Babbar told PTI.
"All production at the firm had been suspended in January itself and now it has been completely stopped,&rdquo; he said.
Marion Biotech had come under the scanner in December over reports of the children's death in Uzbekistan after which India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) initiated a probe into the matter and found 22 out of 36 samples &ldquo;not of standard quality&rdquo; (adulterated and spurious).
The World Health Organization had also declared a &ldquo;medical product alert&rdquo; related to Marion Biotech's drugs in the wake of the deaths reported in Uzbekistan.
The cough syrup 'Dok-1 Max', which was under the spotlight, has no domestic market in India and it was only an export item, the drug inspector said.

The Noida Police on Friday arrested three employees of a city-based pharmaceutical firm whose cough syrup is alleged to have led to the death of 18 children in Uzbekistan last year, officials said.
The arrests come after an FIR was lodged late Thursday night against five officials of Marion Biotech, including two of its directors, over a complaint by a drugs inspector of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), they said.
The central and Uttar Pradesh state drug authorities had checked samples of Marion Biotech's drugs and found 22 of them to be "not of standard quality" (adulterated and spurious), according to the complainant drug inspector.
"Three persons named in the FIR have been arrested, while the two directors of the company are at large. Those arrested are Tuhin Bhattacharya, Head Operation; Atul Rawat, Manufacturing Chemist; and Mool Singh, Analytical Chemist," Phase 3 police station in-charge Vijay Kumar told PTI.

A Goa-bound chartered flight from Russian capital Moscow with 240 passengers on board was diverted to Uzbekistan in the wee hours of Saturday following a bomb threat, police said.
The flight was scheduled to land at the Dabolim airport in South Goa at 4.15 am, a senior police official said.
The flight (AZV2463) operated by Azur Air was diverted before it entered the Indian air space, he said.
"It was diverted after an email was received at 12.30 am by the Dabolim airport director that mentioned about a bomb being planted on the plane," the official said.

The production licence of Noida-based pharmaceutical firm Marion Biotech, allegedly linked with the deaths of children in Uzbekistan, has been suspended while the test results of its controversial cough syrup are awaited, an Uttar Pradesh drug official said Thursday.
A team of central agencies and the Uttar Pradesh drug department on Thursday carried out a fresh inspection at Marion Biotech's office here, a day after the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a medical product alert on Ambronol and Dok-1 Max syrups, both manufactured by the firm.
The health ministry of Uzbekistan claimed these children had consumed the cough syrup.

In fresh trouble for Indian pharma company Marion Biotech, the World Health Organisation has recommended against use of its products in Uzbekistan.
The global health body said on 11 January 2023 that two cough syrups made by the Noida-based company should not be used for children in Uzbekistan. The WHO said that Marion's "substandard" medical products "fail to meet quality standards or specifications".
The two cough syrups are AMBRONOL and DOK-1 Max.
The recommendation follows reports of children dying after consuming the cough syrups in Uzbekistan.
