A meeting with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi seems to have allayed the concerns of senior Congress leader and former Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat. He has now agreed to lead the Congress campaign for upcoming assembly polls in the hill state.

Meanwhile, one person was swept away by heavy rain in Bajpur area of Udham Singh Nagar district, it said.
Four people were trapped in the debris of a collapsed house at Rapad village in Bhetrojkhan area of Almora district out of which a woman was rescued safely, the SEOC said.
An unspecified number of people, all members of the same family, were also &nbsp; trapped in the rubble of a collapsed building in Bhikiyasain of the district, it said. &nbsp; Four labourers, including three women, were trapped in the rubble of a landslide near Joshimath in Chamoli district. One woman labourer was injured in the incident while the rest of them are safe, the SEOC said. &nbsp; &nbsp; The chief minister undertook an aerial survey of the affected areas along with state Disaster Management Minister Dhan Singh Rawat and state DGP Ashok Kumar to assess the damage caused by the rains.
He instructed all district magistrates (DMs) to assess the damages caused to farmers and send him a report at the earliest.
However, he asked people not to panic, saying all necessary steps are being taken to evacuate them to safety.
He also reiterated his appeal to Chardham yatris to stay where they are and not to resume their journeys before the weather improved.&nbsp;He also asked the DMs of Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts to take special care of pilgrims stranded on chardham yatra route. &nbsp; &nbsp; The damage caused by the rains is being assessed, Dhami noted, admitting that farmers had been hit hard by the incessant showers.

According to a rough estimate, around 100 pilgrims from different parts of Gujarat, who went to Uttarakhand for the Chardham Yatra, were stranded following heavy rains and landslides there, Gujarat Revenue Minister Rajendra Trivedi said.

The Defence Ministry &nbsp;on Saturday informed that the bodies of four Indian Navy officers and a sailor have been recovered from the site of an avalanche at Mount Trishul in Uttarakhand. Rescuers are looking for a fifth naval climber and a porter, who went missing after the incident.

A rescue team from Uttarkashi-based Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) led by Colonel Amit Bisht is searching for the missing men, news agency PTI reported quoting the institute. The institute has said bad weather in the area is slowing down the rescue team operation.
A combined team of Army, Air Force and the State Disaster Response Force are also looking for the missing men.

The Defence Ministry on Saturday informed that the bodies of four Indian Navy officers and a sailor have been recovered from the site of an avalanche at Mount Trishul in Uttarakhand. Rescuers are looking for a fifth naval climber and a porter, who went missing after the incident.
The deceased Navy personnel are Lt Commander Rajnikant Yadav, Lt Commander Yogesh Tiwari, Lt Commander Anant Kukreti and sailor Hari Om

The Supreme Court on Wednesday took cognisance of the Uttar Pradesh government's decision to allow 'Kanwar Yatra' in the state in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. 
A bench headed by Justice R F Nariman issued a notice to the state government and posted the matter for hearing on Friday. The court said citizens were "perplexed" by the the yatra being allowed at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and medical experts have warned against large gatherings and urged people to maintain social distancing.
The Yogi Adityanath government on Tuesday allowed the yatra from July 25, despite concerns raised in various quarters over the risk posed by such events in triggering a possible third wave of Covid-19. UP officials have been asked to coordinate with neighbouring states to ensure Covid guidelines are followed.
Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand government has cancelled the Kanwar Yatra this year. It is for the second consecutive year that the Kanwar Yatra is not being held due to the pandemic in BJP-ruled Uttarakhand.
The fortnight-long Kanwar Yatra, which begins with the onset of the month of Shravan around July 25, goes on till the first week of August sees crores of 'Kanwariyas' travelling from different states to collect the holy waters of the Ganga.
