A top Hollywood fundraiser for US President Joe Biden called for a new Democratic presidential candidate on Wednesday, arguing that the party cannot win the White House in November with him as the nominee.
"We are not going to win in November with this president. On top of that, we will not win the House, and we are going to lose the Senate. This is not only my opinion, this is the opinion of every senator and Congress member and governor who I have spoken with in private. Every single one, irrespective of what he or she is saying publicly," George Clooney, an actor, director and film producer, said in an op-ed in "The New York Times".
Clooney, who hosted a very successful fundraiser for Biden in June, said he observed a different Joe Biden at that event.
"The one battle he cannot win is the fight against time. None of us can. It is devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe 'big F-ing deal' Biden of 2010. He was not even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate," he wrote.
"Was he tired? Yes. A cold? Maybe. But our party leaders need to stop telling us that 51 million people did not see what we just saw. We are all so terrified by the prospect of a second Trump term that we have opted to ignore every warning sign," Clooney said.
"I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As a vice president and as president. I consider him a friend, and I believe in him. Believe in his character. Believe in his morals. In the last four years, he has won many of the battles he has faced," he added.
Clooney said they all think Republicans should abandon their nominee now that he has been convicted of 34 felonies. That is new and upsetting information as well. "Top Democrats -- Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, Nancy Pelosi -- and senators, representatives and other candidates who face losing in November need to ask this president to voluntarily step aside," he argued.
"All of the scary stories that we are being told about what would happen next are simply not true. In all likelihood, the money in the Biden-Harris coffers could go to help elect the presidential ticket and other Democrats. The new nominee would not be left off ballots in Ohio," he said.
"We Democrats have a very exciting bench. We do not anoint leaders or fall sway to a cult of personality; we vote for a president. We can easily foresee a group of several strong Democrats stepping forward to stand and tell us why they are best qualified to lead this country and take on some of the deeply-concerning trends we are seeing from the revenge tour that Donald Trump calls a presidential campaign," Clooney wrote.

&ldquo;I wasn't very smart. I decided to travel around the world a couple of times &hellip; shortly before the debate,&rdquo; Biden said while talking to donors at a fundraiser in a Virginia suburb of Washington DC. &ldquo;I didn't listen to my staff &hellip; and then I almost fell asleep on stage.&rdquo; In his remarks, Biden admitted that he did not have a good debate, and said he "wasn&rsquo;t very smart" for "travelling around the world a couple times" before the debate.
Biden also apologised by saying he was sorry for the performance. "It&rsquo;s not an excuse but an explanation." The president&rsquo;s remarks at the fund raiser was just for six minutes, which is far shorter than what he speaks on such occasions.
Meanwhile, the White House said Biden will travel to Wisconsin on Friday. He will conduct a sit-down interview with George Stephanopoulos from ABC News, while on the campaign trail.
He will travel to Philadelphia on Sunday. And next week, he will host a NATO press conference, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference.

A House Democratic lawmaker has become the first in the party to publicly call for President Joe Biden to step down as the party&rsquo;s nominee for president, citing Biden&rsquo;s debate performance against Donald Trump failing to &ldquo;effectively defend his many accomplishments.&rdquo;
Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas said in a statement Tuesday that Biden should &ldquo;make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw.&rdquo;
&ldquo;My decision to make these strong reservations public is not done lightly nor does it in any way diminish my respect for all that President Biden has achieved,&rdquo; Doggett said. &ldquo;Recognizing that, unlike Trump, President Biden&rsquo;s first commitment has always been to our country, not himself, I am hopeful that he will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw. I respectfully call on him to do so.&rdquo;
Doggett, who represents an Austin-based district and is serving his 15th term in Congress, is the first sitting lawmaker in his party to publicly state what many have been privately whispering behind closed doors since last week&rsquo;s debate. Biden&rsquo;s weak performance caused immediate panic among even his most ardent supporters, leading many to question whether the 81-year-old career politician is the strongest Democratic candidate to take on Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, in November.
&ldquo;I represent the heart of a congressional district once represented by Lyndon Johnson,&rdquo; Doggett, who is the No. 2 Democrat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, continued. &ldquo;Under very different circumstances, he made the painful decision to withdraw. President Biden should do the same.&rdquo;
Biden himself conceded the debate didn&rsquo;t go well for him, but he insisted he was ready to fight for a second term as president. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, asked Tuesday about growing concerns among Democrats, said they respect the opinions and thoughts of concerned party members, adding, &ldquo;that&rsquo;s what makes this party different than the other side.&rdquo; As for Doggett, she said: &ldquo;He&rsquo;s going to have his thoughts. That&rsquo;s for him to speak to.&rdquo;
Beyond the White House, control of both chambers of Congress is also hanging in the balance in November, and Democrats find themselves defending far more Senate seats than Republicans. The Democrats hold the Senate with a slim 51-49 majority, while Republicans control the House by only a handful of seats.
Doggett&rsquo;s explosive statement came minutes after former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told MSNBC that she believes &ldquo;it is a legitimate question&rdquo; whether Biden&rsquo;s halting performance is just &ldquo;an episode or is this a condition.&rdquo;
&ldquo;When people ask that question, it&rsquo;s legitimate -- of both candidates,&rdquo; Pelosi said.
Pelosi said she had not spoken with Biden since the debate, but she emphasized that the president is on &ldquo;top of his game, in terms of knowing the issues and what is at stake.&rdquo;
It all amounts to a stunning and swift turn of events for Biden, his campaign and his allies on Capitol Hill, who have spent the better part of the last several years combatting criticism about the president&rsquo;s fitness and defending his ability to serve another four-year term, at the end of which he would be 86 years old.
But Biden&rsquo;s shaky performance during the debate with Trump has shaken Democratic support to its foundations, with members of the party at all levels entertaining the possibility that he can no longer be the nominee.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee and an influential voice in the caucus, over the weekend, broached the possibility of Biden stepping aside ahead of the Democratic convention in August.
&ldquo;So whether he&rsquo;s the candidate or someone else is the candidate, he is going to be the keynote speaker at our convention,&rdquo; Raskin told MSNBC about Biden. &ldquo;He will be the figure that we rally around to move forward.&rdquo;
Other elected Democrats said they were caught off guard by Biden&rsquo;s rambling and raspy performance. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, of Rhode Island, said that he has known Biden for years and served in the Senate with him, but had &ldquo;never seen that happen before.&rdquo;
&ldquo;I think people want to make sure that this is a campaign that&rsquo;s ready to go and win, that the president and his team are being candid with us about his condition &mdash; that this was a real anomaly and not just the way he is these days,&rdquo; Whitehouse told WPRI on Monday.
And then there is a faction of the Democratic party who are deeply disappointed by Biden&rsquo;s performance, but point to the political reality that less than two months from the Democratic National Convention and four months from election day, the path to an alternative candidate is rocky and uncertain.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, Biden&rsquo;s one-time Democratic opponent, told The Associated Press in an interview Tuesday that while he&rsquo;s not confident the president can win in November, he doesn&rsquo;t want him to step aside, considering what the party views as the greatest threat to Democracy in Trump.
&ldquo;A presidential election is not a Grammy Award contest for the best singer or entertainer. It&rsquo;s about who has the best policies that impact our lives,&rdquo; Sanders said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m going to do everything I can to see that Biden gets reelected.&rdquo;

Donald Trump won South Carolina's Republican primary on Saturday, beating former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley in her home state and further consolidating his path to a third straight GOP nomination.
Trump has now swept every contest that counted for Republican delegates, with wins already in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The former president's latest victory will likely increase pressure on Haley, who was Trump's former representative to the UN and South Carolina governor from 2011 to 2017, to leave the race.
A 2020 general rematch between Trump and President Joe Biden is becoming increasingly inevitable. Haley has vowed to stay in the race through at least the batch of primaries on March 5, known as Super Tuesday, but was unable to dent Trump's momentum in her home state despite holding far more campaign events and arguing that the indictments against Trump will hamstring him against Biden.
South Carolina's first-in-the-South primary has historically been a reliable bellwether for Republicans. In all but one primary since 1980, the Republican winner in South Carolina has gone on to be the party's nominee. The lone exception was Newt Gingrich in 2012.
Haley said in recent days that she would head straight to Michigan for its Tuesday primary, the last major contest before Super Tuesday. She faces questions about where she might be able to win a contest or be competitive.
Trump and Biden are already behaving like they expect to face off in November.
Trump and his allies argue Biden has made the U.S. weaker and point to the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan and Russia's decision to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Trump has also repeatedly attacked Biden over high inflation earlier in the president's term and his handling of record-high migrant crossings at the US-Mexico border.
Trump has questioned &mdash; often in harshly personal terms &mdash; whether the 81-year-old Biden is too old to serve a second term. Biden's team in turn has highlighted the 77-year-old Trump's own flubs on the campaign trail.
Biden has stepped up his recent fundraising trips around the country and increasingly attacked Trump directly. He's called Trump and his &ldquo;Make America Great Again&rdquo; movement dire threats to the nation's founding principles, and the president's reelection campaign has lately focused most of its attention on Trump suggesting he'd use the first day of a second presidency as a dictator and that he would tell Russia to attack NATO allies who fail to keep up with defense spending obligations mandated by the alliance.
Haley also criticised Trump on his NATO comments and also for questioning why her husband wasn't on the campaign trail with her &mdash; even as former first lady Melania Trump hasn't appeared with him. Maj. Michael Haley is deployed in the Horn of Africa on a mission with the South Carolina Army National Guard.
But South Carolina's Republican voters line up with Trump on having lukewarm feelings about NATO and continued US support for Ukraine, according to AP VoteCast data from Saturday's primary. About 6 in 10 oppose continuing aid to Ukraine in its fight against Russia. Only about a third described America's participation in NATO as &ldquo;very good,&rdquo; with more saying it's only &ldquo;somewhat good.&rdquo; Haley has raised copious amounts of campaign money and is scheduled to begin a cross-country campaign swing on Sunday in Michigan ahead of Super Tuesday on March 5, when many delegate-rich states hold primaries.
But it's unclear how she can stop Trump from clinching enough delegates to become the party's presumptive nominee for the third time.
Senator Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., complimented Haley while speaking to reporters at Trump's election night party in Columbia but suggested it was time for her to drop out.
&ldquo;I think the sooner she does, the better for her, the better for the party,&rdquo; Graham said.
Trump's political strength has endured despite facing 91 criminal charges related to his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Biden, the discovery of classified documents in his Florida residence and allegations that he secretly arranged payoffs to a porn actress.
The former president's first criminal trial is set to begin on March 25 in New York, where he faces 34 counts of falsifying business records related to hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels in the closing weeks of his 2016 presidential campaign.
Biden won South Carolina's Democratic primary earlier this month and faces only one remaining challenger, Dean Phillips. The Minnesota Democratic congressman has continued to campaign in Michigan ahead of the Democratic primary there, despite having little chance of actually beating Biden.
Though Biden is expected to cruise to his party's renomination, he faces criticism from some Democrats for providing military backing to Israel in its war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Some in his party support a ceasefire as the death toll in Israel's war has reached 30,000 people, two-thirds of them women and children. The war could hurt the president's general election chances in swing states like Michigan, which is home to a large Arab American population.

&nbsp;The New Hampshire attorney general's office on Monday said it was investigating reports of an apparent robocall that used artificial intelligence to mimic President Joe Biden's voice and discourage voters in the state from coming to the polls during Tuesday's primary election.
Attorney General John Formella said the recorded message, which was sent to multiple voters on Sunday, appears to be an illegal attempt to disrupt and suppress voting. He said voters "should disregard the contents of this message entirely.&rdquo; A recording of the call reviewed by The Associated Press generates a voice similar to Biden's and employs his often-used phrase, &ldquo;What a bunch of malarkey.&rdquo; It then tells the listener to &ldquo;save your vote for the November election.&rdquo; &ldquo;Voting this Tuesday only enables the Republicans in their quest to elect Donald Trump again,&rdquo; the voice mimicking Biden says. &ldquo;Your vote makes a difference in November, not this Tuesday.&rdquo; It is not true that voting in Tuesday's primary precludes voters from casting a ballot in November's general election. Biden is not campaigning in New Hampshire and his name will not appear on Tuesday's primary ballot after he elevated South Carolina to the lead-off position for the Democratic primaries, but his allies are running a write-in campaign for him in the state.
It's not known who is behind the calls, though they falsely showed up to recipients as coming from the personal cellphone number of Kathy Sullivan, a former state Democratic Party chair who helps run Granite for America, a super-PAC supporting the Biden write-in campaign.
Sullivan said she alerted law enforcement and issued a complaint to the attorney general after multiple voters in the state reported receiving the call Sunday night.
&ldquo;This call links back to my personal cell phone number without my permission," she said in a statement. "It is outright election interference, and clearly an attempt to harass me and other New Hampshire voters who are planning to write-in Joe Biden on Tuesday.&rdquo; It was unclear how many people received the call but a spokesperson for Sullivan said she heard from at least a dozen people who received it. The attorney general's office encouraged anyone who has received the call to email the state Justice Department's election law unit.
Gail Huntley, a 73-year-old Democrat in Hancock, New Hampshire, who plans to write in Biden's name on Tuesday, said she received the call at about 6:25 p.m. on Sunday.
She instantly recognized the voice as belonging to Biden but quickly realised it was a scam because what he was saying didn't make sense. Initially, she figured his words were taken out of context.
&ldquo;I didn't think about it at the time that it wasn't his real voice. That's how convincing it was,&rdquo; she said, adding that she is appalled but not surprised that AI-generated fakes like this are spreading in her state.
Biden's campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, said in a statement that the campaign is &ldquo;actively discussing additional actions to take immediately.&rdquo; &ldquo;Spreading disinformation to suppress voting and deliberately undermine free and fair elections will not stand, and fighting back against any attempt to undermine our democracy will continue to be a top priority for this campaign,&rdquo; she said.
The apparent attempt at voter suppression using rapidly advancing generative AI technology is one example of what experts warn will make 2024 a year of unprecedented election disinformation around the world.
Generative AI deepfakes already have appeared in campaign ads in the 2024 presidential race, and the technology has been misused to spread misinformation in multiple elections across the globe over the past year, from Slovakia to Indonesia and Taiwan.
&ldquo;We have been concerned that generative AI would be weaponised in the upcoming election and we are seeing what is surely a sign of things to come,&rdquo; said Hany Farid, an expert in digital forensics at the University of California, Berkeley, who reviewed the call recording and confirmed it is a relatively low-quality AI fake.
As AI technology improves, the federal government is still scrambling to address it. Congress has yet to pass legislation seeking to regulate the industry's role in politics despite some bipartisan support. The Federal Election Commission is weighing public comments on a petition for it to regulate AI deepfakes in campaign ads.
Though the use of generative AI to influence elections is relatively new, &ldquo;robocalls and dirty tricks go back a long ways," said David Becker, a former US Department of Justice attorney and election law expert who now leads the Center for Election Innovation and Research.
He said it's hard to determine whether the main intent of the New Hampshire calls was to suppress voting or simply to &ldquo;continue the process of getting Americans to untether themselves from fact and truth regarding our democracy.&rdquo; &ldquo;They don't need to convince us that what they're saying, the lies they're telling, are true,&rdquo; he said. "They just need to convince us that there is no truth, that you can't believe anything you're told.&rdquo; Katie Dolan, a spokeswoman for the campaign of Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota, who is challenging Biden in the Democratic primary, said Phillips' team was not involved and only found out about the deepfake attempt when a reporter called seeking comment.
&ldquo;Any effort to discourage voters is disgraceful and an unacceptable affront to democracy,&rdquo; Dolan said in a statement. &ldquo;The potential use of AI to manipulate voters is deeply disturbing.&rdquo; The Trump campaign said it had nothing to do with the recording but declined further comment.&nbsp;

It was Iowa's coldest caucuses ever, and voters in some parts of the state faced temperatures in the minus 10s with wind chills as low as minus 40.
The campaign now turns to New Hampshire, which will host its primary on January 23 and where Trump holds a large lead in the polls.
