The Centre announced on Friday that U.S. authorities have identified an additional 487 illegal Indian migrants, who are now scheduled for deportation.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, speaking at a press conference, stated that the U.S. has informed New Delhi about "487 presumed Indian nationals" who have received removal orders.

"We've been told there are 487 presumed Indian citizens with final removal orders," Misri explained.
He also indicated that the number could increase as more information becomes available, although no additional details have been provided by U.S. authorities regarding other individuals.
The Indian government has confirmed the identities of the 487 migrants currently on the deportation list.
Earlier, a U.S. military aircraft carrying 104 deported migrants arrived in Amritsar on January 5, marking the first major deportation under President Donald Trump's administration as part of his crackdown on illegal immigration.
The deportees, who had attempted to enter the U.S. illegally, reported that their hands and legs were shackled throughout the flight and were only unbound after arriving in Amritsar.
Regarding concerns over the "inhumane treatment" of Indian deportees, Misri acknowledged that it was a "valid concern" and confirmed that the Indian government would address the issue with U.S. authorities.
"The description by the EAM of the standard operating procedure relating to the use of restraints has been communicated to us by U.S. authorities, including immigration and customs enforcement. EAM attracted attention to the fact that these practices have been in place for a long period," he added.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled for a two-day working visit to the U.S. beginning February 12, where he will meet with President Donald Trump.

Aujla further explained, &ldquo;They went there illegally, but they did not commit any huge crime after going there... We have given a notice to the Speaker and there may be a discussion on this.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Along with Aujla, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav, and other leaders joined the protest outside Parliament, also wearing handcuffs. They claimed that the deported Indians had been subjected to inhumane treatment.&nbsp;

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi also expressed his disappointment with the treatment, saying, &ldquo;I am very disappointed with this conduct of the American government. Congress has submitted an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, urging a discussion on the deportation issue. The motion states, &ldquo;This House must urgently address the issue to prevent further dehumanisation of our people and to uphold the dignity of every Indian, both at home and abroad.&rdquo;&nbsp;
The Lok Sabha was adjourned until 2 pm due to the ruckus over the issue. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated that he would address the Rajya Sabha on the matter at 2 pm.

Tharoor added, &ldquo;If you are in the US illegally, the US has the right to deport you, and if your identity as an Indian is confirmed, then India has an obligation to accept you. So, in both cases, there really isn't much debate. However, it wasn&rsquo;t good to hear that they were brought back forcibly in a military plane, handcuffed, and so on. That was quite unnecessary. It should have been enough to put them on a commercial aircraft or civilian plane and send them back. If you want to do a mass deportation, do it on civilian charters. Tharoor further tweeted, "There were 1100 Indians deported in the previous fiscal year (ending September 2024), under Biden, not Trump. 2. As of 2022, there were 725,000 undocumented Indian immigrants in the US - the third-largest group, outnumbered only by nationals of Mexico and El Salvador. 3. Since October 2020, US Customs and Border Protection officials have detained nearly 170,000 Indian migrants attempting to cross the border illegally from either Canada or Mexico. They are all subject to deportation."
A US Embassy spokesperson addressed the situation on Tuesday, stating that specific details could not be shared. The spokesperson emphasized, "The United States is vigorously enforcing its border and immigration laws." They added, "These actions send a clear message: illegal migration is not worth the risk."

A US military aircraft carrying 104 illegal Indian immigrants landed at the Shri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport here on Wednesday afternoon, sources said.
While 30 of the deportees are from Punjab, 33 each are from Haryana and Gujarat, three each from Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, and two from Chandigarh, the sources said.
An official confirmation on the number of deportees is awaited.
Earlier reports claimed that US military plane C-17 was bringing back 205 illegal immigrants. The flight landed at 1.55 pm. There was heavy barricading outside the airport and police personnel were deployed in large numbers.
This is the first batch of illegal Indian immigrants to have been deported by the US government.
According to the sources, the deportees are expected to be allowed to go home following verification and background checks.
Police will focus on identifying any deportee with a criminal record, the sources said. Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Tuesday that the state government would receive the immigrants and set up counters at the airport.
Punjab NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal on Tuesday expressed disappointment over the US government's decision and said these individuals, who contributed to that country's economy, should have been granted permanent residency instead of being deported.
He said many Indians entered the US on work permits which later expired, making them illegal immigrants.
The minister said he plans to meet External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar next week to discuss the concerns and interests of Punjabis living in the US.
Dhaliwal had also appealed to Punjabis not to travel abroad through illegal means, emphasising the importance of acquiring skills and education to access opportunities worldwide.
He encouraged people to research legal ways and acquire education and language skills before travelling abroad.
After Donald Trump assumed office as the US President last month, the country's law enforcement agencies have launched a crackdown against illegal immigrants.
Many people from Punjab, who entered the US through "donkey routes" or other illegal means by spending lakhs of rupees, are now facing deportation.
