Rajya Sabha monsoon session ends, cut short due to pandemic

After chaotic scenes that resulted in the passage of three contentious farm bills, Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine dine on Wednesday. The monsoon session of the Parliament, was scheduled to go on till October 1, but was cut short in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic. The current Monsoon Session was scheduled to have 18 sittings without a break from September 14 till October 1. The attendance also remained low throughout and now with the session cut short, the 252nd session of the Rajya Sabha has become the third shortest in terms of total sittings since the Upper House came into existence in 1952. Meanwhile, Opposition parties, that boycotted Rajya Sabha session, have called a meeting at the office of Leader of Opposition in the House, Ghulam Nabi Azad, to discuss further strategy on the farm bills passed in Parliament.

Two of the three farm bills were passed in the Rajya Sabha by voice vote amid ruckus and high drama on Sunday. Proceedings in the Upper House were adjourned for a brief period after opposition parties surrounded the well of the House and protested against the government&rsquo;s alleged hurry to push the contentious farm bills. TMC MP Derek O&rsquo;Brien stood in front of the Deputy Chairman&rsquo;s seat and attempted to show him the rulebook of the House, breaking his mic in the process. Speaking to reporters, BJP President JP Nadda said the Opposition's behaviour was unpardonable.

Leader of the House Thavarchand Gehlot seconded it. The opposition had fielded Manoj Jha, an RJD member. Soon after the election, MPs from various political parties congratulated Harivansh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated him for being re-elected. The election was necessitated as Harivansh completed his term as a member of Rajya Sabha this year.
