In a scathing attack on the previous Congress-led UPA government, the current government has brought to light the repercussions of what is termed as India's largest power outage in July 2012, leaving a staggering 62 crore people in darkness. The revelation comes as part of the government's White Paper presented in Parliament, aiming to shed light on the economic landscape during the UPA reign.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled the 'White Paper on the Indian Economy' during the Lok Sabha session. The document underscores the severe power crisis that gripped the nation in 2012, amidst idle generation capacity exceeding 24,000 MW due to fuel shortages like coal and gas. This dire situation plunged the power sector into a state of paralysis, exacerbating power cuts across the nation.
Highlighting the grim scenario upon assuming power in 2014, the White Paper outlines the critical coal shortages plaguing two-thirds of coal-based power plants, amplifying overall power scarcity. Villages endured a mere 12 hours of electricity daily, exacerbating challenges for farmers reliant on consistent power supply.
International agencies had also flagged India's electricity shortages, citing poor service quality leading to crop losses and equipment damage. The World Bank's 2008 report underscored the erratic power supply's detrimental impact on agriculture, a critical sector sustaining millions, mentioned the paper.
The paper also says, the 2012 power crisis remains etched in memory as two major blackouts struck India, affecting over a billion individuals across 21 states. The scale of the outage underscores the magnitude of the challenge faced by the nation's power infrastructure.
In response, Congress unveiled a "black paper," aiming to counter the government's narrative. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge presented a comprehensive document outlining alleged injustices during the Modi government's tenure, including economic disparities, unemployment, and perceived favouritism towards BJP-governed states.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday she had suggested to the Congress that an advisory council comprising prominent personalities from civil society be set up to give a direction to the opposition, but rued that the plan did not materialise.
If all regional parties come together, it would be easy to defeat the BJP, Banerjee said while interacting with some civil society members here.
Banerjee is on a three-day visit to Mumbai. 
Mamata and Nationalist Congress chief Sharad Pawar met on Wednesday afternoon to lay out what he called the "template for 2024".

Mamata&nbsp;met&nbsp; Shiv Sena's Aaditya Thackeray and Sanjay Raut&nbsp;on Wednesday. Her meeting with Uddhav Thackeray did not take place as the Chief Minister has undergone a surgery and has been advised isolation.

"We want to say BJP hatao, desh bachao," she said, adding that her party Trinamool Congress (TMC) will not contest the forthcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
"I don't want my opposition to make their own strategy. So, I am not revealing much," she said.
Banerjee is on a three-day visit to Mumbai to meet leaders of the Shiv Sena and the NCP, amid a strain in ties between the TMC and the Congress.
After its landslide victory in West Bengal earlier this year, the TMC inducted several Congress leaders in its fold. Recently, 12 out of 17 Congress MLAs in Meghalaya defected to the TMC, making it the principal opposition party.
To a query on if she would lead the opposition alliance against the BJP, Banerjee said she is a "small worker" and wants to continue so.
"Continous endeavour is necessary in politics. You can't be abroad most of the time," she said in a veiled dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
"I had suggested to the Congress that there should be an advisory council comprising prominent personalities from the civil society to give a direction to the opposition, but in vain," she said.
Banerjee said the BJP is "not safe" and the need is to keep the country safe.
"Have faith in your cadre. Three farm laws were repealed (by the Centre) and a debate was not allowed in Parliament...why? Because they are afraid and the decision to repeal (the farm laws) was made with an eye on the forthcoming Uttar Pradesh elections," she claimed.
"I am not contesting the UP elections," she said adding that her party will work for all sections of the society without bias, but the focus will be on the poor people.
She said laws like the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) were being misused in the country.
"The UAPA is for the internal security and protection from external forces. This is not for common people. The UAPA is being misused like anything. The I-T department, CBI ED are also being misused," the TMC chief claimed.
Banerjee said there was no need to be afraid and that she will fight till her last breath.
The West Bengal CM also said she was against the sell out of public sector enterprises.
"More employment should be created. We feel the public and the private sector should co-exist, but employment and the poor should not be impacted," she said.
On her meeting scheduled with NCP president Sharad Pawar later in the day, Banerjee said Maharashtra and West Bengal have good relations and that is why she is going to meet Pawar.
"Let's be united, give justice to people and save our country and democracy," she said.
Banerjee appealed to members of the civil society to travel to across country to generate awareness towards this cause.
On the occasion, NCP leader Majeed Memon said West Bengal and Maharashtra account for 90 Lok Sabha seats and claimed the BJP's strength can be reduced substantially in the Lower House of Parliament.
Noted lyricist Javed Akhtar, social activist Medha Patkar, actor Richa Chadha and stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui were among those who participated in the interaction.
On Tuesday, Banerjee met Shiv Sena leaders Aaditya Thackeray and Sanjay Raut.
The meeting was seen as an outreach to fellow opposition leaders by the TMC head.

PTI, Patna:&nbsp;The Lok Janshakti Party will hold a crucial meeting of its Bihar leaders on Monday to decide whether to fight against the JD(U) in the upcoming state assembly polls amid worsening ties between the two members of the ruling NDA.
On the eve of the meeting, LJP president Chirag Paswan fired yet another salvo at JD(U) president and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, saying his decision to provide government jobs to kin of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes community members who were killed is "nothing but an election-related announcement".
In a letter to the Bihar chief minister, he accused Kumar of not fulfilling earlier promises made to SCs and STs, including giving them three dismil of land.
The LJP president said that "if the Nitish Kumar government was sincere", it should give jobs to a family member of all those from the communities who were killed during its 15-year rule.
The LJP, whose main face is Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan, and the JD(U) have been sniping at each other for months.
Kumar's decision to join hands with former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, a Dalit leader like the Paswans with a history of targeting the LJP, has further soured their ties.
While aiming at Kumar, Chirag Paswan has refrained from attacking the BJP and has even been lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
One of the options that Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan's party, now headed by his son Chirag Paswan, may consider is to remain a part of the BJP-led NDA at the Centre but to fight outside the coalition's fold in the state, while not contesting against the saffron party, sources said.
It may be noted that the LJP had in February 2005 fought against the RJD in the Bihar assembly polls, even though both regional parties were part of the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre.
The LJP put up candidates against the RJD while maintaining its ties with the Congress.
This had led to the formation of a hung assembly in the state, ending Lalu Prasad Yadav's RJD's 15-year rule, and another assembly poll held a few months later saw the Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) and BJP alliance storming to power with their maiden majority.
While BJP leaders, including its national president J P Nadda, have been insisting that all three NDA parties will fight the upcoming polls together, sources said a sense of unease has crept in, with Kumar working to strengthen his position by actively wooing leaders from the RJD and tying up with Manjhi.
The JD(U) has also made it clear that it will not hold any seat-sharing talks with the LJP, as its ties have been traditionally with the BJP.
The Election Commission is likely to announce the schedule for the Bihar polls sometime this month. Polls to the 243-seat assembly are likely to be held in October-November.
