The Taliban have challenged the credentials of their country's former UN ambassador and want to speak at the General Assembly's high-level meeting of world leaders this week, the UN has said.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Secretary-General Antonio Guterres received a communication on September 15 from the currently accredited Afghan Ambassador, Ghulam Isaczai, with the list of Afghanistan's delegation for the assembly's 76th annual session.
Five days later, Guterres received another communication with the letterhead &ldquo;Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Ministry of Foreign Affairs,&rdquo; signed by &ldquo;Ameer Khan Muttaqi&rdquo; as &ldquo;Minister of Foreign Affairs,&rdquo; requesting to participate in the UN gathering of world leaders.
Muttaqi said in the letter that former Afghan president Ashraf Ghani was &ldquo;ousted&rdquo; as of August 15 and that countries across the world &ldquo;no longer recognise him as president,&rdquo; and therefore Isaczai no longer represents Afghanistan.

World leaders will have to be vaccinated against the coronavirus to speak at the U.N. General Assembly's big meeting next week, the assembly leader and New York City officials have said, prompting swift objections from at least one nation.

World leaders will have to be vaccinated against the coronavirus to speak at the U.N. General Assembly's big meeting next week, the assembly leader and New York City officials have said, prompting swift objections from at least one nation.
With the diplomatic world's premier event being held in person for the first time during the pandemic, the city International Affairs commissioner told the assembly in a letter last week that officials consider the hall a &ldquo;convention center&rdquo; and therefore subject to the city's vaccination requirement.
They must also be vaccinated if they want to eat or exercise indoors, the letter added.
An angry response from Russia&nbsp;came after the prompting move.&nbsp;Russia&rsquo;s ambassador requested a meeting of the general assembly to discuss the move.&nbsp;
He described it as &ldquo;a clearly discriminatory measure&rdquo;, adding that preventing delegates to access the hall was a &ldquo;clear violation of the UN charter&rdquo;.

The South Korean govt in a statement said, that as BTS has delivered messages of comfort and hope to the entire world, their attendance at the UN General Assembly is expected to serve as a meaningful opportunity to expand communication with future generations around the world and draw their attention on major international issues.
According to a South Korean news portal, BTS will speak during their UN session and a video of their performance will be played. BTS members were also gifted diplomatic passports and signature fountain pens.
