Former Samajwadi Party leader Atiq Ahmed on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court seeking its protection, claiming that he has been "roped in" as an accused in the Umesh Pal murder case and fears threat to his life.
Currently lodged in the Ahmedabad Central Jail, Ahmed has also sought directions to ensure that no physical or bodily injury or harm is done to him in any manner during police custody or interrogation.
He has also sought a direction restraining the state of Uttar Pradesh and others from taking him from the Central Jail in Ahmedabad to Prayagraj or any other part of Uttar Pradesh.
Umesh Pal, who was the prime witness in BSP MLA Raju Pal's murder, and his police security guard Sandeep Nishad were shot dead last Friday outside his home in the Dhoomanganj area of Prayagraj.

According to the cops, the sensational murder was planned by&nbsp; Atiq Ahmed, a former Samajwadi Party leader. Reports suggest Atiq Ahmed's wife and son were also in the bungalow.

Uttar Pradesh police on Monday gunned down one of the accused in the sensational February 24 killing of a prime witness in the BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case in an encounter here.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Navendu Kumar told PTI that Arbaaz, who was the driver of the white SUV used by the assailants to attack witness Umesh Pal, was surrounded by police teams following an intelligence input.
He opened fire on the police team and was injured in the ensuing encounter in Nehru Park under Dhoomanganj police station at around 3 pm, Kumar said.
He was taken to hospital where doctors declared him dead, the officer said.
"Arbaaz was accompanied by two or three other people who managed to escape from the spot. We are trying to track them," the officer added.
Umesh Pal and his police security guard Sandeep Nishad were shot dead on Friday outside his home in Dhoomanganj area of Prayagraj. Another security personnel Raghvendra Singh, who was injured in the attack, was admitted to SRN Hospital in critical condition and was referred to Lucknow on Sunday.
On the basis of a complaint lodged by Umesh Pal's wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered at Dhoomanganj police station (in Prayagraj) against gangster-turned politiciam Atiq Ahmed, his brother Ashraf, wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Gulam and nine others.
Chief Minister Yogi Aditynath had vowed to destroy the mafias after the opposition Samajwadi Party had questioned the law and order situation in the state in the wake of the killing.&nbsp;

A veterinarian, who is said to be the mastermind in the killing of a chemist in Maharashtra's Amravati, was good friends with the deceased Mahesh Kole. 
The National Ivestigation Agency has take over the probe as local police said that it was the Vet Yusuf Khan who shared a post calling for attack on Kohle. The chemist who was murdered by a bunch of youth while he was return home was stabbed to death after he shared a post backing suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, who remarks on Prophet Muhammad had triggered backlash. 
"We are happy that the probe has been handed over to NIA. We think that the matter will reach its conclusion soon and all the accused will be arrested soon," Mahesh Kolhe, brother of Umesh Kolhe, said. 
"Through the Police note, we found out that my brother was murdered over his post on Nupur Sharma...He was good friends with Yusuf Khan (arrested accused), a practicing veterinarian. We knew him since 2006," Umesh said. 
Mastermind has been arrested, so the pace of the investigation will increase undoubtedly. Others who were involved will also be apprehended. We have one demand that the trial be done in a fast-track court and the maximum possible punishment be given: Mahesh Kolhe
