The Ukraine-Russia war is notable for also being fought on the digital frontier. Find out how misinformation campaigns and hackers are fighting in the conflict that&rsquo;s been called World Cyberwar I.

Russia&rsquo;s invasion of Ukraine has triggered a major conflict between two European countries, and caused Europe&rsquo;s worst refugee crisis in the 21st century. While conflict continues on the ground between Russian and Ukrainian forces, this war is also notable for being fought on the digital frontier. It&rsquo;s been called the first TikTok war, or World Cyberwar I.
From misinformation campaigns on social media, to hackers trying to crack the security of government accounts and websites, for this war, the battlefield is also online.
<h2>Misinformation campaigns</h2>
Both sides in the war have been using social media to rally support and spread both information and misinformation. Apps like Telegram have become a virtual battleground, where official sources directly communicate their side of the war efforts to interested users.
Ukraine has used the internet to rally public opinion in its favour, and ask for support. Videos of President Volodymyr <a href="https://www.editorji.com/story/ukrainian-president-volodymyr-zelenskyy-vows-justice-as-russian-war-crimes-come-to-fore-1649159346469">Zelenskyy</a> walking around in devastated cities, and statements emphasising his willingness to stay and fight, have been widely shared by users across the globe.
Ukraine has also been able to crowdsource a &lsquo;virtual army&rsquo; to fight the information war. Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine&rsquo;s minister for digital transformation, has openly called for people with &lsquo;digital talents&rsquo; to join a Telegram group, where they will be given tasks to continue the fight on the cyber front. In March, he told TIME magazine that the global IT army was 3 lakh people strong.
Russia has had a more difficult time with social media campaigning, partly because mainstream western public opinion is very pro-Ukraine, and partly because websites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have taken steps to remove Russian misinformation campaigns and restrict Russian news sources.
Russia has retaliated by blocking access to many of these networks, and encouraging citizens to turn to pro-Kremlin channels on Telegram to get their information.
Russia has also worked to control the perception of the war within its own borders. According to website Politico, the general perception of the Ukraine war on Russian state-owned media is very different from what global audiences have seen. Local news agencies and state-owned media have pushed claims that Ukraine started the conflict, or that America was helping develop bioweapons in Ukraine.
Platforms are also having a difficult time keeping up with the misinformation. According to Rene&eacute; DiResta, researcher at Stanford Internet Observatory, TikTok is having a difficult time moderating misinformation on its platform, which continues to run rampant. An investigation by NewsGuard found that new TikTok users were shown misinformation about the war within 40 minutes of creating a new account.

<h2>Hackers</h2>
While social media is one virtual battlefront, hackers from both sides have also been busy at work trying to disrupt war efforts.
Ukraine's State Service of Special Communication and Information Protection, has said that cyber attacks on the country&rsquo;s critical internet infrastructure have risen by 400% since the invasion. Targets have included state and local authorities, the security and defence sector, financial companies, satellite telecommunications, and the energy sector. Russia-backed hackers recently hacked into a number of Ukrainian military accounts on Facebook, and then posted videos urging the Ukrainian army to surrender.
Pro-Ukraine hackers have also been conducting attacks of their own. A video uploaded on February 27 to a YouTube channel that claims to represent hacking group Anonymous, declares war on Russia, promising to disrupt services in the country. I should point out here that there&rsquo;s no official group known as Anonymous, and different groups of hackers keep using the name.
Since then, many Russian companies and institutions have been hit by hacks that leaked sensitive data. Hundreds of gigabytes of data were leaked from a Belarusian weapons manufacturer, Russia&rsquo;s Space Research Institute, and the country&rsquo;s primary censorship agency.
The aforementioned Ukrainian IT Army has also been carrying out DDoS attacks, which disrupt services, on targets like Russian gas, oil, and infrastructure companies, the Moscow Stock Exchange, and the Kremlin&rsquo;s official website.

<h2>World Cyberwar 1</h2>
Although the term World Cyberwar 1 is very dramatic, there is a distinct 21st century tinge to the current war in Ukraine. Along with fighting on the ground, the war also continues online, with new forms of conflict the world has never seen at this scale. Given the fog of war, and the secretive nature of cybersecurity, we will undoubtedly learn more about cyberwarfare efforts on both sides in times to come.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited one of Ukraine's main Black Sea ports on Friday, a week after a deal was struck with Russia, Turkey and the United Nations to create safe corridors for ships to export grains that have been trapped in the country since the war began five months ago. 

The visits to the ports are part of a broader push by Ukraine to show the world Ukraine is ready to export millions of tons of grains to the world again after last week's breakthrough agreement.&nbsp;

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited one of Ukraine's main Black Sea ports on Friday, a week after a deal was struck with Russia, Turkey and the United Nations to create safe corridors for ships to export grains that have been trapped in the country since the war began five months ago.
His visit to a port in the Odesa region comes as workers were seen preparing terminals for grain exports, which are relied on by millions of impoverished people worldwide facing hunger.
&ldquo;The first vessel, the first ship is being loaded since the beginning of the war,&rdquo; Zelenskyy said.
He said the export of grain will begin with the departure of several ships that were loaded but could not depart the Ukrainian ports after the Russian invasion.
&ldquo;Our side is fully prepared. We sent all the signals to our partners &mdash; the UN and Turkey, and our military guarantees the security situation,&rdquo; he said, adding &ldquo;it is important for us that Ukraine remains the guarantor of global food security." The visits to the ports are part of a broader push by Ukraine to show the world they are nearly ready to export millions of tons of grains to the world again after last week's breakthrough agreement.
The complexities of the agreement and concerns about the safety of shipping crews has set the deal off to a slow, cautious start. It's been a week since it was signed, and no grains have yet left ports. But the sides are facing a ticking clock &mdash; the deal is only good for 120 days.
It comes a week after Russian missiles struck Odesa, throwing into question Moscow's commitment to the deal signed only hours earlier. The sides agreed to facilitate the shipment of Ukrainian wheat and other grains from Black Sea routes blocked by five months of war, as well as fertilizer and food from Russia.
The goal over the next four months is to get some 20 million tons of grain out of three Ukrainian sea ports blocked since the February 24 invasion.
That provides time for about four to five large bulk carriers per day to transport grain from the ports to millions of impoverished people worldwide facing hunger.
&ldquo;We are ready,&rdquo; Ukraine's minister of infrastructure, Oleksandr Kubrakov, told reporters at the port of Odesa on Friday.
But he said Ukraine is waiting on the UN to confirm the safe corridors that will be used by ships navigating the waters, which have been mined with explosives. In the meantime, a ship at the port of Chernomorsk was being loaded with grains, he said.
Martin Griffiths, the UN official who mediated the deal, said the first shipment of grains could depart Ukrainian ports as early as Friday but cautioned that work is still being done to finalize the exact coordinates of the safest routes, saying this must be &ldquo;absolutely nailed down.&rdquo; Lloyd's List, a global publisher of shipping news, noted Friday that while UN officials are pushing for the initial voyage this week to show progress in the deal, continued uncertainty on key details will likely prevent an immediate ramping-up of shipments.

&ldquo;Until those logistical issues and detailed outlines of safeguarding procedures are disseminated, charters will not be agreed and insurers will not be underwriting shipments,&rdquo; wrote Bridget Diakun and Richard Meade of Lloyd's List.
They note, however, that UN agencies, such as the World Food Program, have already arranged to charter much of the grain for urgent humanitarian needs.
Getting wheat and other food out is critical to farmers in Ukraine, who are running out of storage capacity amid a new harvest. Those grains are vital to millions of people in Africa, parts of the Middle East and South Asia, who are already facing food shortages and, in some cases, famine.
Since the deal was signed a week ago, shipping companies have not rushed in because explosive mines are drifting in the waters, ship owners are assessing the risks and many still have questions over how the agreement will unfold.
Ukraine, Turkey and the UN have been keen to show the deal is in action since it was signed one week ago. Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar told Al Jazeera on Thursday that &ldquo;the deal has started in practice&rdquo; and that the first ship leaving Ukraine with grains is expected to depart &ldquo;very soon.&rdquo; Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu expressed similar optimism in a press briefing, framing the deal as a significant step forward between the warring sides.
&ldquo;This is not just a step being taken to lift the hurdles in front of the export of food. If implemented successfully, it will be a serious confidence-building measure for both sides,&rdquo; he said.
The deal stipulates that Russia and Ukraine will provide &ldquo;maximum assurances&rdquo; for ships that brave the journey through the Black Sea to the Ukrainian ports of Odesa, Chernomorsk and Yuzhny.
For ships heading to Ukraine's three ports, smaller Ukrainian pilot boats will guide the vessels through approved corridors. The entire operation will be overseen by a Joint Coordination Center in Istanbul staffed by officials from Ukraine, Russia, Turkey and the United Nations.
Once ships reach port, they will be loaded with tens of thousands of tons of grains before departing back to the Bosphorus Strait, where they will be boarded to inspect for weapons. There will likely be inspections for ships embarking to Ukraine as well.&nbsp;

The ship is expected to reach Istanbul on Tuesday, where it will be inspected, before being allowed to proceed to Lebanon, the ministry said.
Russia and Ukraine signed separate agreements with Turkey and the U.N. clearing the way for Ukraine &mdash; one of the world's key breadbaskets &mdash; to export 22 million tonnes of grain and other agricultural goods that have been stuck in Black Sea ports because of Russia's invasion.
The deals also allow Russia to export grain and fertilisers.

US President Joe Biden said on Monday Americans should not worry about a nuclear war after Moscow put its nuclear deterrent on high alert amid a barrage of Western reprisals over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
In response to a question about whether US citizens should be concerned about a nuclear war breaking out, Biden said "no." White House officials said earlier in the day the United States sees no reason to change its nuclear alert levels at this time, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said.
“But it's also important to remember that, even over the course of the last several months and years, when we have had significant disagreements with Russia over a range of issues, Russia and the United States have long agreed that nuclear use would have devastating consequences and have stated many times, including earlier this year, that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought,” she said in response to a question.
Throughout the crisis, Russia and President Putin have falsely alleged that it is under threat, including from Ukraine, including from NATO, she noted.
“Neither the United States nor NATO has any desire or intention for conflict with Russia. And we think provocative rhetoric like this regarding nuclear weapons is dangerous, adds to the risk of miscalculation, should be avoided, and we’ll not indulge in it,” Psaki said.
“There's no question that what we've seen from President Putin, whether it is escalatory rhetoric as it relates to nuclear capabilities and nuclear intentions -- something that is in direct conflict with something President Putin, himself, and the Russians committed to -- had an alternate -- committed to something else just a year ago, or whether it is the speech he gave last week where he questioned the sovereignty of the country of Ukraine at all, or the actions he's taking right now,” she said.
“Those are not actions of a global leader that should be treated with respect on the global stage,” Psaki said.
Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby described Putin's comment in this regard as unnecessary and escalatory.
“But we are reviewing and analysing that announcement. And I would only just tell you that as we continue to review and analyse and monitor that (Defense) Secretary (Lloyd) Austin is comfortable with the strategic deterrent posture of the United States,” he told reporters.
Senator Joni Ernst, a combat veteran and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, slammed Putin for his comments on nuclear weapons.
“This would be a catastrophe and it would be the end of the Russian Federation. This type of action — going to nuclear war — would absolutely not be tolerated by anyone around this globe. And we certainly need to hear President Biden speak out against these types of actions,” he told Fox News in an interview.
“Vladimir Putin has gone a step too far making these threats, and we need our president to step up and be a leader, not a follower, but a leader and decry these types of announcements by Vladimir Putin. But again, this would truly be the end of the Russian Federation as the rest of the world would step up and destroy him,” he said.
Senator Jim Inhofe, ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, in a statement called on Putin to walk back his threats to go nuclear and to end this war - for which he is solely responsible.
“We have now witnessed the lengths he is willing to go to get what he wants: apartment buildings hit by missiles, civilians indiscriminately killed, Ukrainians taking to subway tunnels as makeshift bomb shelters, and desperate mothers with small children fleeing major cities in the bitter cold of Ukrainian winter,” he said.
Senator Deb Fischer, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the top Republican on the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, said that as if his senseless decision to invade Ukraine and bring horrific devastation to its people wasn’t evidence enough, Putin’s attempt at nuclear blackmail illuminates the truly threatening nature of his regime.

Meta took down a Russian misinformation network on Facebook, which targeted prominent Ukrainian citizens

Meta took down Russian Facebook misinformation and hacking network targeting Ukraine

Facebook&rsquo;s parent company Meta said that it has taken down a coordinated Russian misinformation network, and a hacking group, that was targeting Ukrainian citizens across Facebook and Instagram.
The Russian network would publish fake news and misinformation through 40 groups, pages, and accounts on Facebook, while the hacking network targeted prominent Ukrainian citizens through an exploit called Ghostwriter.
Meta has urged users in Ukraine and Russia to secure their devices and online accounts, and has rolled out tools for the same.
Meta has also blocked monetisation and ads from Russian state media entities, and refused an order from Russia to stop fact-checking their posts. Russia has said that it will restrict the use of Facebook services in the country, which are being used as organising tools by anti-war protestors.

Facebook&rsquo;s parent company Meta said that it has taken down a coordinated Russian network that was targeting Ukrainian citizens across Facebook and Instagram. The network was reportedly linked with a similar operation that was earlier banned by Facebook in April 2020.
Meta also said it took down a coordinated hacking group, attempting to compromise accounts operating in Ukraine.
"We took this operation down, we've blocked their domains from being shared on our platform, and we've shared information about the operations with other tech platforms with researchers and with governments," David Agranovich, director of threat disruption for Meta, told reporters.
<h2>Russian hacking network targets Ukraine citizens</h2>
According to Agranovich, the coordinated campaign used fake accounts to target high-profile Ukrainian journalists, military officers, and public figures. They would publish claims about Ukraine being a failed state, and the West having betrayed Ukraine.
The network was described by Meta as consisting of around 40 accounts, pages, and groups on Facebook. Meta's head of security policy, Nathaniel Gleicher, also said that some prominent Ukrainian citizens were targeted by a hacking group known as Ghostwriter.

Meta has encouraged users in Ukraine and Russia to take extra measures with online security, and to protect all their devices and accounts. Facebook has rolled out a one-click &lsquo;Lock Your Profile&rsquo; feature for users in Ukraine, and expects to roll it out for Russian users soon.
Meta has also blocked monetisation and ads from Russian state media entities. In retaliation, Russian authorities have ordered Meta to stop fact-checking posts by state media organisations. When Meta refused, Russia has said that it will be restricting the use of Facebook services.
Facebook and Instagram are being widely used by anti-war protesters in Russia to coordinate and organise their efforts.

Russian forces moved deep into Ukraine on Friday on the second day of the three-pronged attack on the country.
Ukraine said that its forces are battling the Russian troops outside the Capital Kyiv.
On Friday morning, Ukrainian forces shot down a Russian fighter plane over Kyiv. Reports said that the jet crashed on a residential apartment in the Capital after being shot.
Heavy battle is raging in Eastern, Northern Southern parts of Ukraine as Russian forces mounted an attack from Belarus north and Crimea in South apart from Russia in the East.
Both Ukraine and the US have said that Russia wants to capture the Capital and topple the pro-West government.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has vowed to stay in Kyiv as his troops battled Russian invaders in the biggest attack on a European state since World War Two.
Zelenskyy on Friday said that he and his family were the top targets of the Russians.
Earlier, Russia claimed that it has destroyed Ukraine's air defence system and it targeted over 80 military installations in the blistering attack.

Russian forces moved deep into Ukraine on Friday on the second day of the three-pronged attack on the country.
Ukraine said that its forces are battling the Russian troops outside the Capital Kyiv.
On Friday morning, Ukrainian forces shot down a Russian fighter plane over Kyiv. Reports said that the jet crashed on a residential apartment in the Capital after being shot.
Heavy battle is raging in Eastern, Northern Southern parts of Ukraine as Russian forces mounted an attack from Belarus north and Crimea in South apart from Russia in the East.
Both Ukraine and the US have said that Russia wants to capture the Capital and topple the pro-West government.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has vowed to stay in Kyiv as his troops battled Russian invaders in the biggest attack on a European state since World War Two.
Zelenskyy on Friday said that he and his family were the top targets of the Russians.
Earlier, Russia claimed that it has destroyed Ukraine's air defence system and it targeted over 100 military installations in the blistering attack.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had on Thursday cleared military operation inside Ukraine.

While the situation on the ground in Ukraine continues to change rapidly, a number of Ukraine-based tech startups have had to enact emergency measures, while multi-national tech companies with offices in the country are also resorting to contingencies.
According to a report by TechCrunch, many companies are in the process of figuring out how to evacuate staff from Ukraine, now that the country&rsquo;s airspace has been shut down, and public transportation is out of order.
Ukraine-based startups like Readdle and MacPaw, both of whom develop widely used software, have committed to keep services uninterrupted for international users, while attempting to help employees with the crisis.
International tech companies Uber and Lyft have also committed to help employees with finances and temporary relocation. Facebook and TikTok have both said that they are monitoring their platforms closely, and will respond to the situation as it develops. TikTok has committed to remove misinformation from their platform, while Facebook has set up a Special Operations Center for the country, and allows users to lock their account.

<h2>Ukraine-based startups reckon with crisis</h2>
Ukraine-based startup Readdle, headquartered in Odessa, make productivity tools. The company&rsquo;s spokesperson and managing director, Denys Zhadanov told TechCrunch that Readdle made business continuity plans a while ago, and are executing them now.
Although Readdle now employs people in 11 countries, Zhadanov said that the Ukraine-based team is not being evacuated at this point.
Software developer MacPaw, which makes a suite of popular apps for the Apple&rsquo;s Macs, have said in a blog post that nothing is going to change for their users. <h2>Uber, Facebook, TikTok react to Ukraine crisis</h2>
Uber has been operational in Ukraine since 2016, but has currently paused operations in the country. The company has offered employees and their immediate families relocation to other countries. Drivers and riders have been advised to stay home. Uber told TechCrunch that it will restore service as soon as it is safe to do so.

Fellow ride-sharing app Lyft has also committed to offer financial support for emergency preparedness and relocation to employees.
TikTok told TechCrunch that safety of their community and employees is paramount, and that the company will work to remove misinformation on its platform.
Facebook&rsquo;s head of security policy Nathaniel Glechier has tweeted about the crisis, saying that the company has established a Special Operations Center to closely monitor the situation, and act as fast as possible. The company now allows users in Ukraine to lock their account, similar to features they deployed in Afghanistan in August.
Web host Cloudflare has confirmed that the company has removed all customer cryptographic material from servers in Ukraine, to protect customer data and communications if their data centre is compromised.
