Rishi Sunak is one step closer as the clear frontrunner in the Conservative Party leadership race on Monday to be elected Britain&rsquo;s first Indian-origin Prime Minister after his former boss, Boris Johnson, confirmed he would be pulling out of the contest.
With the former prime minister stepping aside on Sunday night saying it was &ldquo;simply not the right time&rdquo; for his comeback, the prospect of a Diwali victory for Sunak cannot be ruled out.
The 42-year-old former chancellor, who said he wanted to &ldquo;fix our economy, unite our party and deliver for our country&rdquo; when he declared his candidacy, has held a solid lead in the contest.
Leader of the Commons Penny Mordaunt, the only other contestant in the race, has much ground to cover to hit the 100-MPs mark, giving rise to the possibility that the former finance minister may well be declared the new leader as soon as Monday evening.
If Sunak and Mordaunt both make the final shortlist, they would go forward for an online vote of the 170,000 Tory membership and that result on Friday would prove less predictable.

It came just hours after the Bank of England warned of a looming recession as it hiked interest rates. Truss insisted a recession is "not inevitable" and promised "bold" action compared with her rival's caution.

The former UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, is not just running for the Prime Minister but also for history as a win would make him the country&rsquo;s first India-origin and non-white resident of 10 Downing Street.
&nbsp;42-year-old Sunak became finance minister in early 2020, quickly winning plaudits for spearheading government support to people and businesses affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
But he saw opinion turn against him this year, after it emerged that his wife did not pay UK tax.&nbsp;
Grandson of Indian immigrants, Sunak is married to Infosys founder Narayan Murthy&rsquo;s daughter, Akshata.&nbsp;
Critics have also used his private wealth, expensive clothes and houses to portray him as &lsquo;out of touch&rsquo; with the ordinary public. If one looks at his poll campaign, the former finance minister focused on rising inflation and tax cuts.

The race to replace Boris Johnson as the Conservative Party leader and the British Prime Minister closed on Friday evening, along with the deadline for Tory members to register their choice between Indian-origin former Chancellor Rishi Sunak or Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.
Sunak, 42, and Truss, 47, have gone head-to-head in a dozen hustings up and down the UK over the past month to win over the votes of an estimated 160,000 Tory electorate.
While the British Indian former minister has pegged his campaign on getting a grip on soaring inflation as an immediate priority, the foreign minister has pledged tax cuts from day one in office.
Overall, it is how they plan to tackle the cost-of-living crisis faced by the British public that has dominated the debates even as the duo addressed their final hustings in London on Wednesday night, where they reiterated many of their pledges.

&ldquo;I have put restoring trust at the heart of the campaign,&rdquo; said Sunak, in response to a question about integrity and ethics.
While he was the clear frontrunner in the leadership contest in the first round of voting &ndash; when Tory MPs voted to select the two finalists in the contest, the Indian-origin finance minister has been on the back foot in the pre-poll surveys of Tory members who have a vote in this election.
Fierce loyalty to outgoing Prime Minister Johnson is being cited as a key motivating factor in the choice of a majority for Truss, who was not among the ministers who resigned in the days before Johnson&rsquo;s forced exit from 10 Downing Street.
A staunchly low-tax favouring Conservative Party&rsquo;s attraction to Truss&rsquo; tax-cutting promises is the other key factor behind her as the frontrunner to succeed Johnson.
However, Sunak&rsquo;s supporters will be hoping for a repeat of the Brexit referendum result from June 2016 when Britain voted in favour of leaving the European Union (EU) and confounded most forecasts by pre-referendum surveys.
The 2019 general election, which brought Boris Johnson to power with a thumping majority, was also against the forecasts of many poll pundits, who were predicting a less definitive result and anti-incumbency factor going against the Tories.
The winner of the online and postal ballots being cast since voting opened in early August will be announced on Monday, with the new leader heading for Scotland for an audience with the Queen at her summer residence of Balmoral Castle. Either Sunak or Truss will then address their first Prime Minister&rsquo;s Questions in the House of Commons on Wednesday.

The UK prime ministerial race frontrunner, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, continues to hold on to a commanding 22-point lead over former Chancellor Rishi Sunak in the Conservative Party leadership contest, according to a new survey of Tory members on Sunday. 

With under three weeks to go before the September 2 deadline for the votes, Sunak seems to have closed the gap only slightly in recent days.&nbsp;

The UK prime ministerial race frontrunner, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, continues to hold on to a commanding 22-point lead over former Chancellor Rishi Sunak in the Conservative Party leadership contest, according to a new survey of Tory members on Sunday.
In an Opinium poll for &lsquo;The Observer&rsquo; newspaper of 570 Conservative members with a vote in the election, Truss is on 61 percent and the British Indian former minister is on 39 percent. With under three weeks to go before the September 2 deadline for postal and online votes to be cast by the membership to elect a successor to outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Sunak seems to have closed the gap only slightly in recent days.
&ldquo;From the moment we knew the final two candidates, it has been clear that Truss has had all the momentum, and our latest poll sets out just how large her lead among the party members has become,&rdquo; Chris Curtis of Opinium told the newspaper.
&ldquo;With many members having already returned their ballot papers, it is now very unlikely Truss won&rsquo;t become Prime Minister in September. It&rsquo;s clear that Sunak&rsquo;s biggest problem is trust. While some members respect his economic arguments, this hasn&rsquo;t been enough to overcome the view among members that he isn&rsquo;t honest or trustworthy enough for the top job, particularly after he called for Johnson to go,&rdquo; he said.
Opinium&rsquo;s detailed questioning also uncovers a striking lack of enthusiasm for either candidate when members are asked whether they would prefer one of them to Johnson to run the party and country. When offered the choice of Johnson still being in No. 10 Downing Street, or Truss taking over, around 63 percent of Tory members polled said they would prefer Johnson to be still in charge against 22 percent who wanted Truss. On the other side, 68 percent said they would prefer to still have Johnson than see him replaced by Sunak, who was preferred by just 19 percent.
The poll also found that almost three in 10 of the Tory electorate (29 per cent) had already voted. Some 47 percent said they would definitely be voting for the candidate they had opted for. Just 19 percent said they had yet to make up their mind.
Opinium said that while these findings meant it may still be possible for Sunak to pull off a &ldquo;stunning comeback&rdquo; to enter 10 Downing Street, but to do so he would have to win over almost all the undecideds and convert a sizeable chunk of those not fully behind Truss.
The Foreign Secretary&rsquo;s support is particularly strong among older Conservative members, while Sunak&rsquo;s is far higher among younger ones. For Sunak the most cited reason was that he would be better at managing the economy (22 percent), while 10 percent said they regarded him as the most competent or intelligent.
A main reason mentioned by people who backed Truss was dislike of Sunak (14 percent). The same proportion (14 percent) said the Cabinet minister was more honest and trustworthy, while 10 percent chose the fact that she had remained loyal to Johnson and not called on him to resign. Around 2 percent of Tory members cited race or ethnicity as a reason for supporting Truss and not Sunak.
Meanwhile, the bookie's odds also continue to be firmly in favour of a Truss win at 88 percent as opposed to 12 percent for Sunak. Both hopefuls continue to pledge new commitments if elected, with Truss saying she would take on the role of "Minister for the Union" and Sunak promising to introducing legislation to make the UK "energy independent" by 2045 at the latest, as he vowed to ensure there is no repeat of the looming winter crisis.
After voting closes on the evening of September 2, the winner between the two finalists will be declared on September 5 and he or she will take charge as Tory leader and British Prime Minister immediately.&nbsp;
