One person was arrested on Thursday after a car crashed into the gates of 10 Downing Street in London, the office residence of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the Metropolitan Police said.
"At around 16:20hrs [local time] a car collided with the gates of Downing Street on Whitehall,&rdquo; the Met Police said in a statement.
"Armed officers arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving. There are no reports of any injuries. Enquiries are ongoing,&rdquo; the police said.
Officers could soon be seen winding down their operation even as most of Whitehall, the main political hub of London between Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square, was cordoned off.
Officials inside Downing Street have reportedly been asked to stay indoors and it remains uncertain whether Sunak was in his office at the time of the incident.

&nbsp;British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday vowed to do &ldquo;whatever it takes&rdquo; to keep his country safe, amid mounting fears that suspected Chinese spy balloons could also target the UK, a day after the US military shot down a fourth flying object over the American airspace.
During a hospital visit in northern England, Sunak said the UK was in constant contact with its allies across the Atlantic and remained in readiness for any safety response.
Sunak's response comes as his defence minister Ben Wallace confirmed the UK is launching a review into the security implications of the recent incursions into western airspace.
"I want people to know that we will do whatever it takes to keep the country safe,&rdquo; Sunak told reporters.
"We have something called the quick reaction alert force, which involves Typhoon planes kept on 24/7 readiness to police our airspace. I can't obviously comment in detail on national security matters but we are in constant touch with our allies and as I said we will do whatever it takes to keep the country safe," he said.
On Sunday, the US military shot down its fourth flying object, indicating that they were still trying to determine the details and did not yet rule out any explanation for the objects.
&ldquo;The UK and her allies will review what these airspace intrusions mean for our security. This development is another sign of how the global threat picture is changing for the worse,&rdquo; said UK Defence Secretary Wallace.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Saturday used his first visit to Kyiv to announce a major new air defence package, as the country celebrated retaking the southern city of Kherson.
Kyiv meanwhile said it was checking the authenticity of video footage Moscow says shows surrendering Russian soldiers being executed.
"I am here today to say that the UK will continue to stand with you... until Ukraine has won the peace and security it needs and deserves," Sunak told journalists at a news conference with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

And in his evening address, Zelensky thanked Sunak "for your willingness to defend freedom even more strongly with us".

Earlier, the finance minister cut short his visit to the US for an International Monetary Fund (IMF) meeting in Washington to fly back for a meeting with his boss. It had triggered speculation over his job and possible U-turns on the tax cuts he had tabled in Parliament, which had resulted in the pound plummeting against the dollar and the Bank of England stepping in to buy the country&rsquo;s long-term bonds to shore up the pension funds.
The estimated GBP 45 billion worth of tax cuts without a detailed funding plan to back it up were seen as disastrous for the UK economy at a time when inflation has already been soaring.
Truss and Kwarteng, who have been close friends for years, had insisted that the turbulence in the UK economy was part of a global problem exacerbated by the Russia-Ukraine conflict induced energy crisis and post-pandemic recovery.
"We have been colleagues and friends for many years. In that time, I have seen your dedication and determination. I believe your vision is the right one," Kwarteng noted in this departure letter.
An open revolt by Tory MPs and a record surge for the Opposition Labour Party in the opinion polls meant his position in Cabinet had become increasingly untenable after Truss announced the first major reversal of mini-budget policies when she backtracked on scrapping the 45-pence top rate of income tax for the wealthiest.

Acting PM Johnson had earlier appealed to the people to vote for anyone but Sunak.
Sunak who pitched himseld as the underdog in his opening speech warned that it was not responsible to "mortgage country's children and grandchildren's future to make our lives easier now", which was seen as veiled dig at his rival Truss's plans to cut taxes immediately if she becomes the prime minister.
The next hustings is scheduled for Exeter in south-west England on Monday.

Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak on Monday topped the latest round of voting among the Conservative Party members of Parliament as the race to replace Boris Johnson as Prime Minister narrowed down to four, with Tom Tugendhat out of the contest after receiving the lowest votes.
The British Indian former finance minister received 115 votes in the third round of voting, with Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt holding on to the second spot with 82 votes followed by Foreign Secretary Liz Truss with 71 votes, and former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch at 58 votes.
Tom Tugendhat, Tory backbencher and House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee Chair, dropped his tally from the previous 32 to 31 votes and was knocked out of the contest.
While the top tier of the voting tally remains largely unchanged, Sunak has picked up 14 more votes from the previous round of 101, however, Mordaunt has dropped one from 83 in the second voting round last week.
Truss has improved her tally from 64 and Badenoch is up from 49 in the last round.

Ahead of the TV debate cancellation, former Cabinet minister Brandon Lewis said the campaign had so far been "plagued by allegations of dark arts and dirty tricks".
Writing in ‘The Times’, the senior Tory MP said that "aggressive briefing and counter-briefing only adds to [Opposition] Labour's research folders", and would prove a "gift to the Opposition".
The next round of voting is expected on Tuesday to further whittle down the shortlist, with votes scheduled until only two candidates remain in the fray by Thursday.
The final two will then hold hustings up and down the UK to win over the Conservative Party’s membership of around 160,000 eligible voters to cast postal ballots in their favour.
The winner of that ballot will go on to be elected the new Tory leader and take over from caretaker Boris Johnson as the new British Prime Minister by September 5.

The British Indian former finance minister received 115 votes in the third round of voting, with Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt holding on to the second spot with 82 votes followed by Foreign Secretary Liz Truss with 71 votes, and former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch at 58 votes.
Tom Tugendhat, Tory backbencher and House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee Chair, dropped his tally from the previous 32 to 31 votes and was knocked out of the contest.
While the top tier of the voting tally remains largely unchanged, Sunak has picked up 14 more votes from the previous round of 101, however, Mordaunt has dropped one from 83 in the second voting round last week.
Truss has improved her tally from 64 and Badenoch is up from 49 in the last round.

Boris Johnson will become the first British Prime Minister to visit Gujarat when he lands in Ahmedabad this week for a two-day visit to India for “in-depth talks” with PM Narendra Modi, according to Downing Street.
Johnson’s first visit to India as UK Prime Minister will begin on April 21 with a trip to Ahmedabad in Gujarat, which is Prime Minister Modi’s home state.
Investment announcements in key industries in both the UK and India will take place, Downing Street said in a statement on Saturday.
Johnson will then proceed to New Delhi to meet PM Modi on April 22, where the focus will be on India-UK strategic defence, diplomatic and economic partnership.
According to officials on both sides, Johnson will also use his India visit to drive progress in the ongoing Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations launched earlier this year.
“My visit to India will deliver on the things that really matter to the people of both our nations - from job creation and economic growth, to energy security and defence,” said Johnson, ahead of the visit.
“As we face threats to our peace and prosperity from autocratic states, it is vital that democracies and friends stick together. India, as a major economic power and the world’s largest democracy, is a highly valued strategic partner for the UK in these uncertain times,” he said.
While in Ahmedabad, Johnson is scheduled to meet with leading businesses and discuss the UK and India’s “thriving” commercial, trade and people links.
The choice of Gujarat, India’s fifth largest state, was linked with it being the ancestral home of around half of the British-Indian diaspora population in the UK.
“In Gujarat, the Prime Minister is expected to announce major investment in key industries in both the UK and India, boosting jobs and growth at home, as well as new collaboration on cutting-edge science, health and technology,” the Downing Street statement said.
“The Prime Minister will then travel to New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Modi on Friday (22nd April). The leaders will hold in-depth talks on the UK and India’s strategic defence, diplomatic and economic partnership, aimed at bolstering our close partnership and stepping up security co-operation in the Indo-Pacific,” the statement said.
The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) talks, which will move into their third round later this month, are expected to result in a deal predicted to boost the UK’s total trade by up to 28 billion pounds (USD 36 billion) annually by 2035 and increase incomes across the UK by up to 3 billion pounds (USD 3.9 billion).
It emerged earlier this week that at the end of the first two rounds, four out of 26 chapters have been agreed and there has been “significant progress” in the remaining 22 chapters of the FTA.
The two leaders are expected to mandate a timeline for the possible completion of the process, initially set for the end of this year.
Last year, the two prime ministers had agreed on a UK-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, announcing more than 530 million pounds (USD 692 million) in investment into the UK and committing to a deeper bilateral relationship across trade, health, climate, defence and security, and connecting people.
India was identified as a priority relationship for the UK in the 2021 Integrated Review and was invited by the UK as a guest to last year's G7 summit in Cornwall, the UK government officials noted.
Downing Street highlighted that the UK is leveraging post-Brexit trade opportunities with India’s growing economy to drive down prices in key commodities for consumers, open opportunities for UK businesses in areas like green tech and services, and create high-wage, high-skill jobs.
According to official estimates in the UK, investment from Indian companies already supports 95,000 jobs across the UK, which is expected to be boosted by upcoming announcements and a future free trade deal.
PM Modi and Johnson last met in person on the sidelines of the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow in November last year. Johnson’s visit next week is seen as long overdue on both sides, having been cancelled twice before due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

Taking place from June to December 2022, the six-month trial will include 30 firms that have agreed to allow staff to work up to 32 hours per week without cutting their wages or benefits.
According to reports, studies have shown that productivity improves along with corresponding gains in workers’ well-being.
Similar trials have taken place in other countries, including Spain, New Zealand, and Iceland. More are scheduled to run in Canada and Australia.

Taking place from June to December 2022, the six-month trial will include 30 firms that have agreed to allow staff to work up to 32 hours per week without cutting their wages or benefits.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will on Monday unveil a plan to lift coronavirus restrictions from July 19, while urging the population to "learn to live with" the virus.
The prime minister will give a press conference and Health Minister Sajid Javid is scheduled to address parliament on the issue.
Johnson had initially aimed for a full reopening on June 21 but was forced to push back the date because of a surge in the highly contagious Delta variant.
The prime minister's office says the latest figures indicate that the number of cases will continue to rise as restrictions are lifted, but also that "the link to hospitalisations and deaths has been weakened" thanks to vaccinations.
